심정순 일가의 소리와 내포제 문화 (Pansori of Sim, Jeongsun and his family and Naepoje culture)

초록

본고는 충청남도 내포 출신으로, 20세기 초반 서울에서 판소리와 가야금병창, 산조, 재담 등으로 활약했던 명인 심정순과 그의 가계 음악인들, 심매향 · 심상건 · 심화영의 소리에서 나타나는 음악적인 특성을 정리하고, 이를 타 지역의 판소리와 비교하여 보았다. 그리고 충청남도 내포 지역의 다른 문화 양상과 결부시켜, 이 지역의 판소리 문화에 대해 고찰하였다.
먼저, 심정순과 그 일가 음악인들의 소리에서 나타나는 음악 특징은 ① 평조를 주로 사용한다는 것이고, ② 선율 진행은 매우 평탄하며, 고음을 질러 순차적으로 하행하는 선율 및 4도 하행하여 종지하는 형태를 갖고 있다. 그리고 ③ 즉흥적으로 소리를 구사하는 특성을 보인다.
심정순 일가의 소리에서 나타나는 선법과 선율의 특징은, 그들의 소리 기반이 되는 충청 지역의 기층 음악 어법과 상통하는 면을 보여준다. 판소리 평조는 충남지역에서 흔히 사용되는 남부경토리와 유사한 구조를 갖고, 순차 하행 선율이나 4도 하행 종지 형태는 경기 무가나 경기 민요에서 전형적으로 사용되는 특징이다. 그리고 경기 출신의 판소리 창자인 염계달이 판소리에 도입한 추천목과 경드름 대목의 특징적인 선율 형태이기도 하다. 즉, 심정순 일가의 소리는 서산 지역을 소리 기반으로 하고 있는 만큼 충남 기층 음악 어법을 보유하고 있다. 그리고 이러한 이유로 전라도를 기반으로 한 동 · 서편제 판소리 창자들의 소리와 큰 차이를 보이고, 충청 지역의 중고제 창자인 김창룡, 이동백의 소리와는 공통적인 특성을 보이는 것이다.
그러나 심정순 일가의 소리와 김창룡 · 이동백의 소리는 전반적으로 일치하는 특성을 보이되, 또한 조금 구별된다. 평조를 많이 사용하는 점은 동일하나, 심정순 일가의 소리에서 평조의 특징이 더욱 분명하게 나타난다. 평탄한 진행이나 순차하행, 4도 하행 종지도 심정순 일가의 소리에서 더 두드러진다. 중고제 판소리로서의 특성이 심정순 일가의 소리에서 더 명확히 나타나는 것이다. 이는 심정순 일가와 김창룡 · 이동백이 충청지역의 창자인 점에서는 동일하지만, 심정순은 내포 지역인 서산 출신으로 경기도에 인접한 지역에 거주하였고, 김창룡과 이동백은 서천 지역으로 전라도에 인접한 지역 출신이라는 점에서 그 차이를 설명할 수 있을 것이다. 즉, 중고제를 경기 · 충청 지역의 소리라고 했을 때, 내포 지역은 경기도와 충청도의 한 가운데 핵심부이지만, 서천은 충청남도의 가장 남쪽 지역으로 전라도와 닿아 있고, 그만큼 전라도 판소리의 영향을 일부 받았을 것이라고 추정할 수 있기 때문이다. 또한 내포 지역은 충청남도의 여타 다른 지역과 지리적, 언어적, 문화적으로 구별되는 독특한 문화권을 형성하여 온 지역으로, 민요나 무가에서도 이러한 차이를 발견할 수 있다. 그리고 이는 경기 지역과 문화적 친연성을 보인다.
결국, 심정순 일가는 심팔록 - 심정순 - 심상건, 심재덕, 심매향, 심화영으로 여러 대를 거쳐 가문의 소리를 이루면서, 내포 지역의 문화를 자신들의 소리에 담았다. 이로서 전라도 음악과는 매우 구별되는 독특한 소리를 이루었고, 이는 평조를 중심으로 한 악조의 사용이나 경기 어법이 녹아 있는 선율 진행으로 드러난다. 이러한 특성은 충청 지역 창자인 김창룡 · 이동백의 소리와 충청제로서 동일성을 띠기도 하지만, 내포제로서 또한 구별되는 특성을 보여주고, 내포라는 지역이 매우 독자적인 문화권을 형성하여 왔음을 알게 한다.

영어초록

Sim, Jeongsun was a Pansori master from Naepo, Chungcheongnam-do and he took an active role in Pansori, Gayageum Byeongchang, Sanjo, and Jaedam in Seoul in the early 20th century. This study examines the musical characteristics of Sim, Jeongsun and his family including Sim, Maehyang, Sim, Sanggeon, and Sim, Hwayeong and compares these with those of Pansori songs of other regions. In addition, this study examines the Pansori culture of Naepo area in Chungcheongnam-do in connection with other cultural aspects of the region.
The musical characteristics of the Sim family are as follows; ① Mostly Pyeongjo is used, ② Progress of melody is very smooth. The melody goes down gradually from a high note or ends after going down 4 notes, and ③ Songs are sung impromptu.
The characteristics of the modes and melodies used by the Sim family are similar to those of Chungcheong area, the base of their songs. The structure of Pansori Pyongjo is similar to that of Southern Gyeongtori used frequently in Chungnam area. And a melody that goes down gradually and a melody that ends after going down 4 notes are typical characteristics of Shaman songs and folk songs of Gyeonggi area. These are also the characteristic melodies of Chucheonmok and Gyeongdeureum introduced to Pansori by Yeom, Gyedal, a native of Gyeonggi. In short, the songs of Sim, Jeongsun and his family used the basic characteristics of Chungnam music as the base of their music was Seosan, an area in Chungnam. As a result, their songs are very different from Dongpyeonje and Seopyeonje Pansori of Jeollado and quite similar to the songs of Kim, Changnyong and Lee, Dongbaek, the founders of Junggoje Pansori in Chungcheong area.
Pansori by the Sim family and those by Kim, Changnyong and Lee, Dongbaek are quite similar but a little different. Both use Pyeongjo a lot but the characteristics of Pyeongjo are clearer in the songs by the Sim family. Smooth progress, gradual going down, and ending after going down 4 notes are more profound in the songs by the Sim family. The characteristics of Junggoje Pansori are clearer in the songs by the Sim family. The Sim family, Kim, Changnyong and Lee, Dongbaek are the founders of Pansori in Chungcheong area. The fact that Sim, Jeongsun was from Seosan, an area closer to Gyeonggi-do and Kim, Changnyong and Lee, Dongbaek were from Seocheon, an area closer to Jeolla-do might explain this difference. The Junggoje Pansori are songs of Gyeonggi and Chungcheong area. As Naepo is in the middle of Gyeonggi-do and Chungcheong-do while Seocheon is in the southern part of Chungcheong touching Jeolla-do, songs by Kim, Changnyong and Lee, Dongbaek were influenced by Jeolla-do Pansori. In addition, unlike other areas in Chungcheongnam-do, Naepo has unique geographical, language, and cultural characteristics and such differences are found in folk songs and Shaman songs. And these reflect cultural affinity to Gyeonggi.
In conclusion, the Sim family established the songs of their own family through several generations of singers from Sim, Palrok to Sim, Jeongsun, Sim, Sanggeon, Sim, Jaedeok, Sim, Maehyang, and Sim, Hwayeong and expressed the culture of Naepo area in their songs. Their songs have unique characteristics, which are very different from the characteristics of Jeolla-do music and use Pyeongjo and other one jo and melodies of Gyeonggi music. Such characteristics are similar to the characteristics of the songs by Kim, Changnyong and Lee, Dongbaek but they also reflect the unique cultural characteristics of Naepo.
