한승원<동학제>에 나타난 제의(祭儀)를 통해 실현되는 개벽세상 (The World of Gaebyeok(開闢世上, the Dawn of Human Civilization) in Han Seung-won's 『Dong-hak-je(東學祭)』)

초록

본 논문에서는 혁명의 개념이 아닌 제의(祭儀)의 개념을 적용하여 한승원의 대하장편소설 『동학제』를 분석하고자 하였다. 실제 서사의 진행을 살펴보면, 한승원의 『동학제』는 동학혁명이라는 역사적 사건을 배경에 두고 있지만, 작가의 소설미학을 통하여 서사가 전개되고 있음을 알 수 있다.
『동학제』의 작품 제목처럼 ‘ ~ 제’라는 용어에 사용된 ‘제’는 명사 뒤에 붙은 접사로서 기능한다. 그러기에 한승원의 작품 『동학제』는 ‘동학’을 하나의 제의로 그리고자 했음을 작품 제목을 통해 간파할 수 있다.
한승원의 『동학제』는 제의를 통해서 염원을 이루어 가는 과정이기도 하다. 『동학제』 서사를 통해 등장하는 인물들의 염원은 크게 억압의 존재를 없애고자 하는 염원과 존재를 유지하고 이어가고자 하는 염원으로 나누어진다. 전자는 피지배 계층의 염원이자 동학도인들의 염원이었다. 반면 후자는 지배 계층이자 양반들의 염원이었다. 그 염원의 풀이와 이음 역시 두 부분으로 크게 구분된다.
이인한의 생모 박씨는 종의 씨를 받아 신씨 가문의 대를 온전하게 이었고, 전장에서 찾아온 이인한의 시신을 가문 선산에 묻음으로써 집나갔던 아들을 다시 신씨가문의 구성원으로 복귀시키고 있다. 이로써 결국 신씨가문의 염원은 동학제(東學祭)라는 제의 과정을 통해 그 염원의 풀이를 이루고 있다.
또 다른 하나의 염원은 평등세상을 향한 적극적 현실 개입을 통해 드러난다. 전투에 참여한 동학군들은 무기와 사람의 힘이 아니라 한울님의 신령한 힘으로 전투에서 승리한다고 믿는 미친 짐승들의 무리처럼 보인다. 그러한 동학군들 모습에서 표출되는 것은 염원이라기보다 오히려 그렇게 되기를 바라는 그들의 간절한 믿음이었다. 동학군들은 평등세상을 지향하는 그들의 믿음을 전장에다 풀어 놓고 있는 것이다.
『동학제』 서사는 소안도라는 곳으로 떠나는 인물 평산과 안씨, 우암과 별님이의 모습을 그린다. 온갖 고난과 위기를 겪은 그들이 마지막으로 향하고 있는 새로운 세상, 소안도라는 섬은 그들의 사랑을 억압하는 어떠한 요소도 존재하지 않는 곳이다. 그들에게 그곳은 새로운 평등세상이자 개벽세상인 것이다.
제의는 사람이 태어나고 짝을 맺고 죽음에 이르는 기나긴 여정을 무사히 치른 것에 대한 극진한 위로이다. 그 장(場)의 참여자 또한 현실의 슬픔을 위로받고 또 다시 살아갈 힘을 얻는다. 그 힘은 또 다른 가능성이다. 이러한 가능성이 『동학제』의 마지막 장면에 등장하고 있다. 『동학제』의 마지막 장면은 동학도인들이 그리는 새로운 평등세상은 유교, 불교, 동학 모두가 함께 나아가야 도달할 수 있는 개벽세상임을 깨우쳐주고 있다.
결국 『동학제』는 민초들의 염원이나 지배 권력층의 염원이 동학혁명과 더불어 또 그 이후까지 어떻게 진행되고 있는가를 보여주는 제의(祭儀)의 장(場)이었다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study was to analyze 『Dong-hak-je(東學祭)』, which is Han Seung-won's long epic novel, by applying a concept of ritual, not a concept of revolution. Examining the actual narrative progression, Han Seung-won's 『Dong-hak-je(東學祭)』 is putting background in the historical event called Donghak revolution, but can be known to be developed narration through the author's novel aesthetics.
Like the title of a work in 『Dong-hak-je』, ‘Je,’ which was used in a term called ‘ ~ je,’ functions as affix of being attached following a noun. As can be known in examples such as Gi-u-je(祈雨祭, ritual for rain), Ye-sul-je(藝術祭, art festival), Ui-ryeong-je(慰靈祭, memorial service), etc., it is suffix that adds a meaning of ancestral rite or festival. Thus, Han Seung-won's work titled 『Dong-hak-je(東學祭)』 can be known to have aimed to depict 'Dong-hak' as a ritual through the title of a work.
That is to say, in Han Seung-won's 『Dong-hak-je』, an action of dedicating sacrifice through a ritual is also the process of making a desire. An aspiration of characters, who appear through the narration of 『Dong-hak-je』, can be divided largely into a desire of aiming to remove the existence of suppression and a desire of aiming to proceed with maintaining the existence. The former was the aspiration of the subjugated class and also the desire of Donghakdoin(s). On the other hand, the latter was the aspiration of the ruling class and Yangban(兩班, aristocrat). These wishes that the characters in the narration of 『Dong-hak-je』 were progressed by having background as the historical event called Donghak revolution. Even the interpretation and the connection in its aspiration are divided largely into two parts.
Lee In-han, who is Donghak-jeopju(東學接主) in Daerim, disappears through the last battle in Donghak force(東學軍). Lee In-han, who had left the Shin clan with clarifying that he himself is a child of a slave, is returning to the Shin clan regardless of his intention along with death. Lee In-han aimed to escape from the Shin clan with disclosing Yangban's false, but is going back rather as a member of the family because of having been dead in the battle.
Lee In-han's biological mother Mrs. Park bodily carried on a family line of the Shin clan by receiving a seed of a slave, and buried Lee In-han's corpse, which came from the battle, in the family ground, thereby making him return as a member of the Shin clan. According to this, the desire of the Shin clan is being ultimately achieved through the process of a ritual called Dong-hak-je(東學祭).
Another interpretation of the aspiration is a combatant situation through positively intervening in reality toward the equal world. The Donghak forces, which participated in the battle against the Japanese army and the government forces, look like a group of crazy animals believing that they gain the battle. What is expressed in such image of Donghak forces was their desperate belief of wishing for being so rather than a desire that they have. It is what the Donghak forces are undoing their belief of pointing to the equal world in the battlefield.
『Dong-hak-je(東學祭)』 depicts the image of Pyeongsan & Mr. Ahn, Uam & Byeolnim who leave for a place dubbed Soando. The new world of heading for the last by them as those who suffered all the hardships and crises, namely, the island called Soando can be a place that isn't existed any obstacle of suppressing their love. As for them, that place is the world of Gaebyeok(開闢世上, the Dawn of Human Civilization) in the equal world.
A ritual is cordial consolation on what a person safely went through the long journey of being born, entering into a pair, and reaching death. A participant in the field(場) is also consoled the sadness of reality and is encouraged once again. The power is another potentiality. This possibility is appearing in the last scene of 『Dong-hak-je』. The last scene of 『Dong-hak-je』 is enlightening that the new equal world depicted by Donghakdoin(s) is the world of Gaebyeok(開闢) that can be reached only when all of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Donghak will need to advance together.
『Dong-hak-je』 resulted in being the field(場) of ritual(祭儀) that shows how a desire of grass roots or an aspiration of the ruling power class is being progressed along with Donghak revolution and even after it.
