통일윤리와 화쟁(和諍) – 북한이라는 타자와의 화쟁 가능성을 중심으로 – (Ethics of Korean Reunification and Hwajaeng (和諍): Focused on the Possibility to Harmonize the Contentions of North Korea, the Other)

초록

타자와의 공존은 인간의 존재성에 기반한 필연적 요청이다. 그런데 근대 시민사회의 정착 이후 급속히 진행된 개인화는 이러한 요청을 경시하거나 제대로 인식하지 못하게 하는 요인으로 작동하고 있다. 우리 시민사회의 경우는 이러한 개인화와 함께 가치관의 물질화, 극단화라는 현상과 마주함으로써 내부와 외부의 타자를 인식하고 관계를 맺는 과정 전반에서 어려움을 겪고 있다.
우리에게 가장 중요한 타자 중 하나는 북한이다. 외부의 힘에 의한 분단과 세계적 차원의 한국전쟁, 지속적인 긴장과 화해 모색 등의 과정을 공유하면서 북한은 적대와 통합의 모순적 상황을 껴안아야 하는 타자가 되고 있다. 부버와 레비나스의 타자윤리는 이러한 타자에 대한 무조건적 존중과 환대를 첫 번째 윤리적 원칙으로 내세운다. 존재경험보다 윤리경험을 앞세우는 레비나스의 타자윤리를 북한이라는 타자에 적용하는 통일윤리로 해석할 수 있는 가능성도 있고, 타자와의 인격적 만남을 중심에 두는 부버의 윤리를 통일윤리로 해석할 수 있다. 그러나 이러한 타자윤리의 전제는 절대자로서의 신의 얼굴을 전제로 하고 있을 뿐만 아니라, 유대공동체라는 특정 종교적 배경을 상정하고 있다는 점에서 우리의 통일윤리로 활용하는 과정에서 한계를 지닐 수 있다.
남북한이 공유할 수 있는 가능성을 중심으로 대안을 찾아보는 과정에서 우리는 한국불교, 그 중에서도 원효의 화쟁 개념을 토대로 하는 새로운 통일윤리 모색을 시도할 수 있다. 화쟁의 과정은 자신과 온전히 분리될 수 없는 존재로서 타자를 상정하면서 만남과 각자의 주장을 충분히 펼치는 쟁(諍)의 과정, 상대방 주장이 지니는 일리(一理)를 수용하여 보다 나은 대안을 모색하는 화회(和會)의 과정 등 세 단계로 전개될 수 있다. 실제적인 통일 논의의 과정에서는 현재 남북한 불교계 사이의 관계망 등을 공유자원으로 활용할 수도 있다는 점에서 화쟁은 실질적인 통일윤리로서의 가능성도 지니고 있다.

영어초록

Coexistence with others is an inevitable request based on human existence. However, individualization that has fast grown after the settlement of civil society works as a factor that makes people undervalue or unable to properly appreciate such a request. Faced with said individualization as well as the materialization of values and extremism, Korean civil society is experiencing difficulties in the overall process of recognizing internal and external others and making relationships.
One of the most important Others to Korea is North Korea. The country is becoming the Other with whom South Korea should embrace contradictory conditions of hostility and integration as the two Koreas have shared the division by external forces, the Korean War at an international level, continued tension and search for reconciliation. In the ethics of the Other proposed by Buber and Levinas, the first ethical principle is unconditional respect and hospitality for the Other. Levinas’ ethics of the Other that puts ethical experience before existential experience and Buber’s ethics of the Other that centers on a personal encounter with the Other can be interpreted as the reunification ethics applicable to North Korea, the Other. However, there are constraints in adopting these ethics as the ethics for Korean reunification because these ethics of the Other are premised on the face of God, or the absolute being and also postulate a specific religious background, namely, a Jewish community.
In an effort to find an alternative that can be shared by South and North Koreas, an attempt can be made to search for a new reunification ethics based on Korean Buddhism, among which the concept of hwajaeng proposed by Wonhyo. The process of hwajaeng can be conducted in three phases: the meeting phase in which two parties meet, postulating the Other, who cannot be completely separated from the Self; the jaeng (諍) phase in which two parties make contentions as they want to; and the hwahoe (和會) phase in which two parties accept some reason in the contention of the Other. There is also a possibility that hwajaeng can be used as practical ethics of Korean reunification since the relation network between North and South Korean Buddhist communities could be utilized as shared resources in the practical discussion for reunification.
