북한도교의 전승과 재구성 (Succession and Reconstruction of Daoism in North Korea)

초록

21세기에도 여전히 냉전시대의 연장선에서 북한 관련 뉴스는 ‘핵무기’ ‘전쟁’ 등의 이미지로 소비되며, 국제사회에서 ‘깡패국가’ ‘전체주의국가’ ‘독재국가’로 규정된다. 북한이 개인의 다양한 정치적 목소리를 억압하고 표현할 수 없게 한다는 측면에서 위의 규정은 타당할 수 있다. 그러나 ‘깡패국가’와 같은 선정적 표현은 북한사회의 특수성을 배제하는 폭력적 표현이기도 하다. 한 국가’의 정치형태는 하나의 ‘이데올로기’로 정의되기 어렵다. 왜냐하면 내부적 요인보다는 외부적 요인 즉 한반도의 지정학적 특수성, 주변국가와의 역학 관계, 나아가 강대국들 간의 파워게임 등의 요소가 주는 영향력이 크기 때문이다.
국제사회에서 북한은 조롱과 ‘희화화’의 대상이 되기도 하는데, 가장 큰 역할을 하고 있는 것은 김일성과 김정일의 신격화(神格化)이다. 북한의 삼대 세습은 ‘유교사회주의’로 명명되고 그 정치사회적 특징들이 다양하게 연구되었지만, 김일성․김정일 신격화의 도교적 요소는 지금까지 연구된 바가 없다. 대표적으로 김일성 전기에서 항일운동 시기 김일성은 다양한 도교적 능력을 갖춘 초인적 인간으로 묘사된다. 뛰어난 한 인간의 능력을 ‘도사’ 혹은 ‘신선(神仙)’의 능력으로 표현하는 것은 조선시대 고전 영웅소설 속 도교적 능력을 갖춘 비범한 인간의 묘사와 유사하다. 1980년 대 이후 김일성의 신격화과정에서 그는 도교적 메타포 안에 인간의 한계를 초월한 존재로 묘사되고 있는 것이다. 북한의 도교는 중세의 반동종교로 규정되는데, 본 논문에서는 텍스트 너머에 있는 북한 도교의 실체에 다가가기 위해 다음의 4가지 도교측면을 중심으로 연구결과를 도출하였다.
첫째, 북한조선철학사와 교과서에서 규정하는 도교는 상층지배계급의 욕망을 반영하고, 신선사상 장생불사(長生不死)와 같은 종교적 특징은 봉건적 지배와 착취를 보장해 주는 반동적 사상이다. 둘째, 북한사회는 도교를 반동종교라고 하지만 도교의 외단(外丹)은 조선의 중세과학기술사에서 수용하고 있으며 내단(內丹) 수련법의 양생법(養生法)은 전통의학에서 계승되고 있다. 이러한 계승은 전통을 긍정적으로 수용하고 나아가 강한 민족적 자부심으로 포장되는데 특히 미국 유엔의 경제제재로 인한 의료품 보급의 어려움을 전통의학을 통해 극복하려한 것으로 보인다. 셋째 북한의 동학과 대종교 연구는 주체사상의 확립이라는 목표 아래 민족주의를 고양시키는 민족종교로서 연구되고 있다. 민족고유의 사상에 대한 논의 확대를 위해 고유의 신선사상이 등장한다. 넷째 북한 권력은 조선도교 메타포의 친연성(親緣性)을 활용하여 권력세습의 정당성을 확보하고자 김일성 김정일과 관련된 도교신화를 새롭게 생산하고 있다. 이러한 지점은 남북분단 후 북한의 민족주의가 열강 사이에서 체제유지를 위한 생존과 결사의 수단이라는 측면에서 논의될 수 있다. 요컨대 북한 도교는 주체사상의 확립이라는 목표 아래 ‘민족주의 강화’ 요소로서 변용되고 있는 것이다. 남북한의 전통 사상과 문화를 근간으로 하는 비교연구는 평화담론 확대를 위한 하나의 주요한 교류 연구가 되기라고 생각한다.

영어초록

In the 21st century, North Korea-related news is saturated with terms such as “nuclear weapons” and “war” as a continuation of the Cold War era. North Korea is defined as a “gangster nation”, a totalitarian state, and a dictatorship. However, these are violent expressions, which ignore many aspects of North Korean society. The political form of a nation is hardly defined by a single expression or ideology. This misrepresentation can be blamed on external factors such as the geopolitical importance of the Korean Peninsula, the dynamics of neighboring countries, and the power struggle amongst powerful countries. These external factors are more influential on the world’s opinion of North Korea than any internal factors. In the international community, North Korea is portrayed as a ridiculous caricature, largely because of the deification of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il. Although the hereditary succession of North Korea is called “Confucian Socialism” and its political and social characteristics have been studied in various ways, the Daoist elements related to Kim Il Sung’s and Kim Jong Il’s divinity have never been studied. For example, Kim Il Sung is described as superhuman with diverse Daoist abilities like the magical ability to shorten distances during the anti-Japanese movement. Expressing a superior human ability with the power of ‘Daoist’ or ‘Sinsun(神仙)’ is similar to the description of an extraordinary human being with Daoist abilities in the classical hero novel of the Joseon Dynasty. Since the 1980s, the process of the deification of Kim Il Sung has portrayed him as a transcendent person by employing Daoist metaphors. North Korea’s Daoism is defined as the reactionary religion of the Middle Ages. In this paper, the following four aspects of Daoism have been examined in order to approach the reality of North Korean Daoism beyond its sanctioned text.
First, Daoism, as described in North Korea's philosophy of history and textbooks, reflects the desire of the aristocratic level, and Daoist elements such as longevity and immortality are reactionary ideals that guarantee feudal rule and exploitation. Second, despite North Korean society referring to Daoism as a reactionary religion, the extra-alchemy of Daoism is accepted by the academic area of Joseon medieval science and technology, and the cultivation of the internal-alchemy is inherited by the field of traditional medicine. This succession is reflected in the glorification of tradition as a point of national pride. Especially, it seems that the state has tried to overcome the difficulty of the lack of medical supplies by focusing on traditional medicine in the face of economic sanctions imposed by the by US and UN. Third, Donghak(東學) and Daejonggyo(大倧敎), as they are studied in North Korea, are examined as national religions used to strengthen nationalism with the goal of establishing the ideals of Juche (主體思想). In order to expand the debate on the ideology of the nation, the state insists that Korean Daoism has its own unique characteristics. Fourth, the North Korean state is producing new Daoist myths related to Kim Il Sung in order to secure the legitimacy of its hereditary succession by utilizing the affinity between Korean Daoist metaphors. This point can be discussed in terms of North Korea’s nationalism as a survival strategy employed in order to maintain their own system in the face of being surrounded by powerful countries after the division of the North and South.
In conclusion, North Korean Daoism is being transformed as an element of ‘nationalism’ with the goal of establishing the Juche ideology. At a point in time when North and South Korea need to make efforts based on the exchange of traditional ideas and peaceful discourse on the Korean peninsula, the study of North Korean Daoism will only strengthen their mutual sensitivity.
