근대 연극장의 재편과 ‘흥행’ 개념 - ‘연행’에서 ‘흥행’으로 - (The Reformation of Modern Theatrical Field and the Concept of 'heunghaeng’ : From 'yeonhaeng' to 'heunghaeng')

초록

이 글은 근대 연극이 ‘연행/설행’에서 ‘흥행’으로 술어의 변화를 논증하고 그 문화사적 의미를 규명함으로써 흥행 개념을 역사화하기 위한 것이다. 연극이 흥행한다는 것은 자명한 것이 아니라 1910년 전후로 일본에서 도입된 낯선 개념이다.
‘흥행’의 술어는 1900년대에서 1910년대에 걸쳐 저작권법제와 연극장 취체법규 등 연극장의 풍속 통제와 관련하여 등장하여 연극장으로 확산되면서 1910년 초 연극의 ‘연행’을 대체했다. 이러한 식민지적 역사의 기원을 갖는 ‘흥행’의 용어는 그간 이윤추구라는 연극의 상업적 목적의 의미로만 간주됨으로써 전통적인 공연 문화도 ‘흥행’으로 기술되었다.
따라서 이 글에서는 연극의 상업적 목적이 ‘흥행’의 술어로 구현되는 방식을 근본적으로 질문함으로써 ‘흥행’이 식민지 조선에서 역사적으로 구축되는 과정을 추적했다. 이로써 이 글의 문제의식을 토대로 근대 극장의 탄생이라는 공간성에서 연극 행위의 수행성으로 초점을 이동하여 연극을 둘러싼 지형의 근본 변화의 분석이 가능하게 되었다.
이러한 분석의 결과 연극장이 흥행장으로 편제되는 배치 방식의 변화가 연극장의 변화를 야기한 근본 동인임이 규명되었다. 이것은 1900년대 연설회가 활발했던 공론장이 약화되는 1910년대 연극장의 변화를 제도적 시스템의 차원에서 공공성과 결부하여 설명하게 할 것이다.

영어초록

The purpose of this article is to trace and historicize the concept of 'heunghaeng' by demonstrating the shift of predicate from 'yeonhaeng/seolhaeng' to 'heunghaeng' and clarifying its cultural historical meaning in the modern Korean theatrical. The concept of 'heunghaeng, or 'drama performance' was not self-evident but rather unfamiliar, which was introduced from Japan around 1910.
The predicate of 'heunghaeng' appeared in association with copyright legislation and control law related to the regulation of the folk culture of the theatrical field in the 1900s through the 1910s. Then, while it was diffused to the theatrical field, the predicate of the drama 'heunghaeng' replaced 'yeonhaeng' in the beginning of 1910. Even if the term 'heunghaeng' has its origin in the colonial history, it was also used in describing the traditional performance culture since the term was regarded as meaning merely a commercial objective of performance like profit seeking.
Therefore, this article has chased the process of the formulation of performance historically in colonial Korea by questioning the way the commercial purpose of drama was expressed with the term 'performance' or 'heunghaeng.' That awareness of a problem from this paper allowed us to analyze a fundamental change of the topography surrounding drama which shifted its focus from spatiality of the birth of the modern theater to performativity of the drama act.
As a result, such a shift in the placement method where the theatrical field was replaced with the realm of 'heunghaeng' was the basic drive of the change in the dramatic sphere. So, this will possibly explain the change of the theatrical field in the 1910s, where the public sphere such as speech convention was diluted, in relation to the publicity and in terms of an institutional system.
