‘변화(變化)’와 ‘장(場)’을 통해 본 윤리 도덕 개념의 변천과 현대적 의미: 규범윤리학의 주요 이론을 중심으로 (The Evolution and Modern Meaning of Ethical and Moral Concepts through ‘Change’ and ‘Field’: Focused on the Main Theories of Normative Ethics)

초록

본 논문은 ‘변화(變化)’와 ‘장(場)’의 관점에서 서구 규범윤리학에 나타난 윤리 도덕 개념의 변천과 현대적 의미를 탐구한다. 윤리는 장의 영향을 받아 변화하고, 다시 장에 영향을 주는 상호작용 속에 존재한다. 본고에서는 장이론이 바람직한 공동체의 이론적 근거를 제공한다는 점에서 서구 규범 윤리학사의 주요한 세 가지 윤리학 이론을 다룬다. 첫 번째로, 아리스토텔레스 이래의 ‘덕 윤리 사상’은 상대주의적 결함에도 불구하고, 복지 문제 등을 포괄하는 사회의 복잡화, 다원화에 부응하여, 명시적이고 최소화된 도덕규범의 요청 속에서 공동체 내 개인의 덕성과 자질 함양을 강조하는 강점이 있다. 두 번째로, 칸트의 ‘의무론적 윤리’는 양심이나 존엄성과 같이 법규범과는 달리 도덕규범에 고유하게 요청되는 본질적인 가치를 제시한다는 장점이 있다. 하지만 현대 도덕규범의 명시화, 규칙화 흐름에 대응하여, 도덕규범의 근간이 되는 가치가 훼손되지 않는 한에서 결과주의의 규칙 윤리와 덕 윤리를 보완하는 형태로 변할 필요가 있다. 세 번째로, 밀의 ‘공리주의 윤리학’은 보다 합리적, 객관적 관점에서 윤리 현상을 분석, 평가하여 효율적 공리원칙에 따라 최대 다수의 행복을 수립하려는 특성이 강하다. 단 현대의 주요 장에서 나타나는 이러한 규칙화 추세 속에서도 수양론적 덕성 함양과 같은 본래적, 내면적 가치에 대한 보완이 필요하다. 변화와 장의 관점에서 볼 때, 인간과 인간만이 아니라 자연과 동물, 인간과 AI 등의 공존을 모색해야 할 장 속에서 규범 윤리의 한계를 전통 도덕과 열린 윤리관으로 보완함으로써 의무윤리, 공리주의 및 덕 윤리가 상호 보완하는 새로운 윤리관의 변화를 기대할 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

This paper explores the transformation and contemporary meaning of the concept of ethics and morality in Western normative ethics from the perspective of ‘change’ and ‘field’. Ethics changes as it is influenced by the field, which in turn changes as it interacts with the field. The exploration of these changes and the field, which are caused by the interaction of social and cultural factors in different regions and times, is necessary for an establishment of healthy community in modern society.
Drawing on a wide range of research in the field from the perspective of change and field, this paper considers three major ethical theories in the history of Western normative ethics that provide a theoretical basis for a desirable community.
First, the ‘virtue ethics school’ since Aristotle, despite its relativistic flaws, has the strength of emphasizing the cultivation of individual virtues and qualities within a community in response to the complexity and pluralism of society, including welfare issues, amidst the call for an explicit and minimized moral code.
Second, Kant’s deontological ethics has the advantage of presenting intrinsic values, such as conscience and dignity, that are uniquely required by moral codes, as opposed to legal codes. However, in response to the modern trend of specification and regularization of moral codes, it needs to be transformed into a form that complements the rule ethics and virtue ethics of consequentialism, as long as the values underlying the moral code are not compromised.
Third, Mill’s ‘utilitarian ethics’ has a strong characteristic of analyzing and evaluating ethical phenomena from a more rational and objective perspective and establishing the happiness of the greatest number of people according to the principle of efficient utilitarianism. However, even in the midst of this regularization trend, which is also a tendency of modern major fields, there is a need for complementation and research and development of intrinsic and internal values such as cultivation of deontological virtues.
From the perspective of change and field, it is possible to create a new ethics in which duty ethics, utilitarianism, and virtue ethics complement each other by supplementing the limitations of normative ethics with traditional morality and open ethics in the field of a community coexisting not only with humans but also with nature, animals, and AI, unlike in the past.
