초록

본고는 행복의 고향 에 수록된 세 편의 소설—김광현의 「명숙 아주머니」, 강태수의 ｢기억을 뚜지면서｣, 리정희의 ｢소나무｣—을 중심으로 CIS 지역 한인 문학에서 재현되는 젠더 가면이 콜호스의 표상과 관련하게 전개됨을 확인하고 그 양상을 분석하여 소설에서 젠더 가면의 의미를 밝히고자 하였다.
2장에서는 서사의 양태를 분석하여 젠더 가면의 우상화와 소외 그리고 분열이 드러내는 가면의 수행성을 밝혔다. 「명숙 아주머니」의 명숙은 소비에트 이념이 요구하는 이상적 여성 영웅의 젠더 가면으로 ｢기억을 뚜지면서｣의 아쌰는 공산주의 이념에 비판적 젠더 가면으로 각각 남성 화자의 시선을 통해 이상화·우상화되며, 여성 주체의 내면 타자화 되고 소외됨을 보였다. 반면에 ｢소나무｣의 "복순"의 젠더 가면은 전통적 여성성과 사회주의적 여성상 사이에서 분열되고, 그 분열이 곧 그녀의 고통이자 내면의 갈등으로 표출된다.
3장에서는 소설들의 시적인 언어를 분석하여 우상화 젠더의 균열이 드러내는 남성의 불안과 젠더 수행의 교차성이 드러내는 젠더 가면 벗기의 수행성을 밝혔다. ｢명숙 아주머니｣에서는 “명숙 아주머니”에 대한 비연속적인 정동을 통해서, ｢기억을 뚜지면서｣에서는 아쌰의 죽음에 대한 “나”의 불연속적인 반응을 통해서, ｢소나무｣에서는 "복순"의 비약적으로 뜨거운 열정을 통해서 고정되어 있는 듯이 보이는 젠더 가면에 균열을 냄을 밝혔다. 우상화된 젠더 가면은 남성의 욕망과 불안을 가리키는 동시에, 여성 주체의 내면과 욕망, 충동을 억압하거나 은폐하고, 젠더 가면이 단순히 사회적·이념적 요구에 의해 주어지는 것이 아니라, 개인의 내면적 욕망, 경제적 조건, 공동체의 전통적 규범이 복합적으로 교차하며 수행되고, 지배적 규범에 균열을 낼 수 있음을 보였다.
CIS지역 소설에서 젠더 가면은 단순한 사회적 역할이나 이념적 표상이 아니라, 변화하는 시대와 개인의 내면, 경제적·민족적 조건이 복합적으로 충돌하고 교차하는 지점에서 끊임없이 생성·해체되는 수행적, 미학적 장치임을 확인였다. 또한 이를 통해 CIS 공산주의 디아스포라 문학에서 젠더와 정체성, 이념과 경제, 주체와 타자 사이의 역동적 관계와 그 미학적 의미를 새롭게 밝혔다. 이러한 분석은 디아스포라 문학의 젠더 연구가 단순한 정체성 논의를 넘어, 사회적 규범과 주체의 내면, 그리고 미학적 언어가 교차하는 복합적 층위에서 이루어져야 함을 시사한다.

영어초록

This research analyzes the representations of gender masks in three short stories from The Hometown of Happiness—Kim Gwang-hyeon’s “Ms. Myeongsuk,” Kang Tae-su’s “While Dinging up Memories,” and Ri Jeong-hee’s “Pine Tree”—to illuminate the significance of gender masking in Korean diaspora literature from the CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) region. In Chapter 2, the narrative modes of these texts are examined to reveal the performativity of gender masks manifested through idolization at the same time alienation, and isolated internal division. In “Ms. Myeongsuk,” the titular character embodies the idealized female hero constructed by Soviet ideology, while Asha in “While Dinging up Memories” represents a critical stance toward communist ideals. Both characters are idealized and idolized through the male narrator’s gaze, rendering the female subject othered and alienated. In contrast, the gender mask worn by Boksun in “Pine Tree” is fragmented between traditional femininity and socialist womanhood, and this fragmentation is expressed as her inner suffering and existential conflict.
Chapter 3 focuses on the poetic language in the stories, revealing how fractures in the idealized gender masks point to male anxiety and how the intersections of gender performance expose the performative nature of unmasking. In “Ms. Myeongsuk,” the narrator’s disjointed affect toward Myeongsuk, in “While Dinging up Memories,” the narrator’s discontinuous reaction to Asha’s death, and in “Pine Tree,” Boksun’s impulsive passion—each disrupts the appearance of a fixed gender identity. These moments of poetic dissonance reveal that idealized gender masks simultaneously reflect male desires and anxieties, while also suppressing or concealing the female subject’s inner drives and desires. The study argues that gender masks are not simply products of social or ideological demands, but are performatively constructed at the intersection of individual desire, economic conditions, and communal norms, with the potential to fracture dominant ideologies.
Gender masks in CIS-region literature are not static social roles or ideological symbols; rather, they are dynamic aesthetic devices that are continually constructed and dismantled at the crossroads of shifting historical eras, inner subjectivity, and socio-economic and ethnic contingencies. Through this lens, the study uncovers the aesthetic implications of gender, identity, ideology, and economy, and the relational tensions between self and other in Soviet Korean diaspora literature. This analysis demonstrates that gender in diaspora literature must be examined not solely through identity politics, but through multilayered intersections of social norms, inner subjectivity, and aesthetic language.
