초록

식민치하에 시작된 신춘문예는 1940년도를 마지막으로 중단되었다가 해방 후, 1954년부터 각 신문사들이 신춘문예를 부활시켜 다시 신인 발굴에 나선다. 신춘문예의 부활과 정착은 6․25 이후 작가 부족 현상을 겪고 있던 우리 문단에 역량 있는 신인 작가를 공급하는 등 기여한 바가 크다. 특히 전후의 새로운 아동문학에의 요청을 제도적으로, 문학적으로 반영하는 모습을 보여주는 것이 바로 신춘문예다. 물론 신춘문예가 등단 제도의 제도화가 새로운 문학의 모색과 탄생에 실질적으로 기여한 부분을 가늠하기는 어렵다. 하지만 우수한 신인 발굴과 문단의 저변확대, 문학 기층형성이라는 취지를 띤 신춘문예는 식민지 시대 신춘문예의 계승 및 발전이자 이후 가장 강력한 등단 제도로 군림하게 되는 문화제도적 토대를 조성하면서 활력을 불어넣은 것은 부인할 수 없다. 이에 본고는 신춘문예 실시에 대한 이견보다는 한국문학사에서 중요한 향연이었다는 점을 기반으로 하여 1970년대 신춘문예 동화 당선작(가작 포함)을 대상으로 그 특성을 살폈다.
특히, 일제 때부터 실시하여 오랜 연혁을 가진 『동아일보』와 『조선일보』를 대상으로 연구한 결과, 1970년대 동화 당선작들은 약한 아이들의 처지와 심경을 대변하는 인물과 유사한 약자를 중심으로 한 창작품이 많았다. 또한 물욕을 갖고 있는 어른과 달리 어린이는 세속에 물들지 않은 순수함을 담고 있었다. 즉, 1970년대 신춘문예 동화 당선작은 어린이를 대상으로 하기에 계몽적인 측면을 고려한 것으로 보인다. 이는 1960년대 신춘문예 동화 당선작들과도 크게 다르지 않은 주제와 창작 경향이라 할 수 있다. 아울러 『동아일보』는 동화를 선호하고 『조선일보』는 동화와 아동소설의 장르 선호보다는 좀 더 다양한 작품을 선호한 결과를 발견할 수 있었다. 사실, 1970년대라는 긴 장(場) 속에서 두 일간지만을 대상으로 하여 신춘문예 경향을 파악한다는 것은 무리가 있지만, 『동아일보』와 『조선일보』가 갖고 있는 오랜 역사와 문학적 성과를 통해 1970년대 동화 당선작(가작)의 특성을 파악할 수 있으리라 판단된다.

영어초록

After the liberation of Korea in 1945, the annual spring literary contests revived and flourished, and contributed to the rise of talented new writers in Korea, which had suffered from a shortage of writers since the beginning of the Korean War. In particular, the spring literary contests reflected the institutional and literary demands of the newly emerging postwar children’s literature. It is difficult to gauge the actual contribution of the institution of the spring literary contests to the quest for and the birth of new type of literature. However, it is undeniable that the aim of the spring literary contests-discovering talented new authors, expanding the base of writers in Korea, and forming a new literary base-was met. The development and success of the spring literary contest was not possible in the colonial period. Owing to the fact that it was an important feat in the history of Korean literature, this essay examines the characteristics of the fairy tales and other literary works of the spring literary contests of the 1970s.
In particular, two daily newspapers, “Donga” and “Chosun,” both of which had long histories dating back to the time of the Japanese colonization of Korea, analyzed the fairy tales of the 1970s. According to the results of the study, the fairy tales evaluated by “Donga” and “Chosun” had many creative ideas centering on weak characters similar to that of weak children. Also, unlike an adult with a bath, the child was innocent of innocence. In other words, it seems that the fairy tales of the spring literary contests of the 1970s provided much insight about children. This is a theme and creative tendency that is not much different from what was found in the winning works of the spring literary contests of the 1960s. Additionally, while “Donga” favored fairy tales, “Chosun” preferred considering a variety of works in addition to fairy tales and works pertaining to children’s literature. It is unreasonable to think that we can comprehend the entire literary trend of the spring literary contests during the long period of the 1970s from only two daily newspapers. However, the long history and literary achievements of “Donga” and “Chosun” can help us discern and understand the characteristics of the fairy tales that won the spring literary contests.
