OTT 플랫폼 시대 드라마 제작사 임직원의 기획개발에 관한 인식 변화 (Changes in perceptions on the development of executives of Korean drama production companies in the era of OTT platforms)

초록

본 연구는 2020년대 이후 빠르게 변모해온 한국 드라마산업 환경에서 드라마 제작사의 기획개발 활동이 어떻게 달라지고 있는지 조사, 분석했다. 이를 위해 한국 드라마 대부분을 제작하고 있는 드라마 제작사의 임직원들이 최근 드라마 기획개발 개념, 세부 활동, 역량에 대하여 어떻게 인식하고 있는지 설문조사와 심층면접을 거쳐 탐색했다.
연구 결과, 국내외 OTT 플랫폼 기업이 드라마 기획, 제작, 유통을 본격화하면서 드라마 제작사의 기획개발 양상이 크게 달라지고 있음을 확인했다. 과거 방송사 미니 시리즈가 드라마산업의 주류였을 때는 기성 작가가 중심에 서서 대본을 개발하는 기획 개념이 통용되었다. 그러나 최근 기획개발 활동은 웹툰, 웹소설 등 원작 구매, 신인작가 발굴 및 육성, 대본 개발, 편성, 투자 유치, 감독 및 배우 캐스팅, 미디어 플랫폼 결정까지 포함하는 넓은 범위로 확장되고 있음이 밝혀졌다. 이에 따라 본 연구는 현 시점에서 한국 드라마의 기획개발 정의를 ‘장래 방영 또는 서비스할 것을 목적으로 콘텐츠 소재를 발굴하고, 영상화에 필요한 권리를 확보하며, 작가 등 집필진을 구성하여 드라마로 제작이 가능하도록 대본을 개발·완성하고, 감독, 주요 출연진과 미디어, 플랫폼을 확정하는 일련의 모든 작업을 총칭’ 한다로 범위를 확장하여 제시하였다. 아울러 드라마 기획개발을 소재 발굴․대본 개발, 패키징, 미디어 플랫폼 매칭 등 세 단계로 구분하고, 각각의 세부활동 내용을 정리하였다.
본 연구는 한국 드라마 기획개발의 확장된 정의와 세부활동 내용을 규명하고 정리하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 그러나, 드라마 제작사의 기획개발에 참여하는 주체와 역할, 다양한 집필 방식을 포함하는 기획개발 시스템의 유형과 특징, 장단점을 제시하지 못했다는 점에서 한계가 있고, 이는 향후 후속 연구의 과제가 될 것이다.

영어초록

This study examined and analyzed how the development activities of drama production companies are changing in the rapidly changing environment of the Korean television drama industry since the 2020s. Through surveys and in-depth interviews, researchers explored how the executives and staff of drama production companies, which develop and produce most of Korean dramas, currently perceive the concept of drama development, activities, and capabilities.
As a result of the study, it was confirmed that the development aspects of drama production companies are changing significantly as domestic and foreign OTT platform companies start producing, and distributing Korean dramas in earnest. In the past, when mini-series of broadcasters were the mainstream of the Korean drama industry, the concept of development in which established writers stood at the center and developed the script was commonly used. However, recently, it has been revealed that development activities are expanding to a wide range, including purchasing originals such as webtoons and web novels, discovering and nurturing new writers, developing scripts, attracting investment, packaging such as casting directors and actors, and matching media platforms.
Accordingly, this study extended to define the development of Korean dramas at this point as 'a generic term for all the series of works to discover content materials for the purpose of broadcasting or service in the future, and to secure the rights necessary for video, and organize a team of creators and develop the script to make it possible to produce a drama and further more to determine the director, main cast, media, and platforms’. In addition, this study divided the drama development into three stages: sources discovery and script development, packaging, and media platform matching, also classified the details of each activity.
This study is meaningful in that it identifies the new definition and detailed activities of Korean drama development. However, there is a limitation in that this study did not present the participants and their roles involved in the development and the type, characteristics, strengths and weaknesses of the development system including various writing methods. This will be a task of future research.
