근세 일본의 한어통사와 당통사에 관한 일고찰 (The Mode of Occupational Duties of Korean and Chinese Interpreters in Modern Japan)

초록

본고에서는 근세 일본에 있어서 대마도 한어통사와 나가사키 당통사의 성격을 파악하고, 당시 이들 통사들의 한어학습와 당화학습은 어떠한 방식으로 이루어졌는지에 대해 살펴보았다.
첫째, 한어통사는 60인 상인 출신으로 통역과 외교무역을 겸했으며 세습되었다. 그들은 가정학습 이외에도 통사로서의 자질을 키우기 위해 전문통사로 육성되거나 조선관련 업무를 맡는 등 번 재정에도 기여하였다.
둘째, 당통사는 일본으로 귀화한 중국인만 임명되었는데, 그들은 통역과 외교무역 이외에 당인들의 생활 전반을 관리, 통제하는 역할도 수행하였다.
셋째, 한어통사와 당통사는 모두 세습되었으며 무역업무와 통역업무를 통해 엄청난 명예와 부를 축적할 수 있었다.
넷째, 대마도의 조선무역은 무역의 주도권을 대마도주에게 일임하였으나 나가사키의 당함무역은 막부 산하의 봉행소의 관할하에 이루어졌다. 또한 한어통사는 대마도인, 즉 일본인 계통으로 세습되었지만, 당통사는 중국인으로부터 일본인 모계세습을 통해 일본사회에 융화되었다.
다섯째, 한어통사의 자제는 외국어로서의 한어를 습득하기 위해 한어사와 같은 집단학습이 이루어졌지만, 당통사의 자제는 모국어인 당화를 구사하는 부모로부터 가전되는 자료로 가정 내에서 개별학습으로 이루어졌다.
이외에도 근세 일본에 있어서 대마도 한어통사와 나가사키 당통사 육성을 위한 당시의 교육시스템 및 프로그램에 대한 실증적인 연구가 필요하다고 생각하며, 금후의 과제로 남겨둔다.

영어초록

This paper explores occupational characteristics of both 「Korean interpreters (韓語通士)」 in Tsushima (大馬道) and 「Chinese interpreters (唐語通士)」 in Nagasaki in modern Japan and the manners in which they have been then professionally educated and trained for the respective languages and cultures concerned.
Firstly, as the members of 「the Sixty-Merchants Association」, Korean interpreters have been responsible for foreign trades as well as interpretations and their duties have been traditionally inherited from generation to generation. Not only has the education for Korean been conducted for them within their family circles, but they have also been intensively fostered to become professional interpreters or have taken up Chosun-associated duties, all of which have been aimed at polishing and improving their capabilities as professional interpreters.
Secondly, Chinese interpreter as an occupation has been qualified and appointed only to the Chinese people who be came naturalized as Japanese. As well as for interpretations and foreign trades, Chinese interpreters have been responsible for taking care of and controlling the over all lives of Chinese expatriate living in Japan.
Thirdly, both Korean and Chinese interpreters have been perceived traditionally as hereditary occupations and they could gain enormous amounts of wealth and honour through interpretations and foreign trades.
Fourthly, the Tsushima state has been given all the trade initiatives to its foreign trades to Chosun by the Shogunate, where as the Nagasaki state’s foreign trades to the Qing Dynasties of China have been controlled by 「the magistrate’s office(奉行所)」 subordinate to the Shogunate. Lastly, while off springs of Korean interpreters have been given historically contextual and integrated ways of education for Korean language through which to learn it as a foreign language, those of Chinese interpreters have been educated rather privately within their family circles by relying primarily on sources inherited from their Chinese-speaking parents.
Apart from them, I also feel as a future research subject in question the necessity for further empirical researches concerned with the education systems and programmes of professionally training and fostering Korean interpreters in Tsushima and Chinese interpreters in Nagasaki in modern Japan.
