초록

본 논문은 조선시대 임진왜란 일기자료의 현황과 그 전승 보존 양상을 살펴 본 것이다. 현전하는 임진왜란 일기자료는 약 55종 정도이다. 55종의 일기자료에 대해 특징별 분류를 시도한 것은 임진왜란 일기가 전쟁이라는 특별하고도 혹독한 체험 속에서 작성하는 것이기에, 그에 대응하는 기록자의 연령과 입장 또는 정치적 사회적 지위에 따라 대응 방식과 경험의 범위가 다를 수밖에 없었다는 점을 포착한 것이다. 이 일기자료들은 임진왜란 당시의 시간과 공간에서 종으로 횡으로 그물처럼 엮여있기 때문에, 자료 현황과 함께 자료의 특징을 동시에 제시함으로써 당시 전쟁 현장의 실상을 다양한 측면에서 접근해 볼 수 있는 기초를 마련해보고자 한 것이다.
현장성과 즉시성이 강조되는 일기자료의 가치와 의미는 그것이 저자가 기록한 원형을 얼마나 유지한 채 전승되느냐에 달려 있다. 몇 가지 사례들을 통해 살펴본 결과 선조의 친필일기를 후손들이 전사하거나 문집에 수록할 때 원칙적으로는 당시 보존 상태를 충실하게 반영했음을 알 수 있다. 교감을 통해 글자를 교정하고 때로는 번다한 내용을 덜어내기도 하며 내용 보충이 필요한 부분에 소주를 달기는 했지만, 원문이 누락되었거나 알아볼 수 없는 경우 내용이 이어지지 않더라도 꼬박꼬박 ‘缺’을 표시했을 만큼 원본 그대로 전승하기 위해 노력했다. 선조의 기록이기에 보존의 의지가 강했고, 선조의 본래 의도를 함부로 훼손하지 않았다. 따라서 현재 일기자료들은 그 전승 형태가 다양하더라도 1차 자료로서의 가치는 충분하다고 하겠다. 앞으로 일기자료 연구는 생활사ㆍ미시사 탐색이나 사료적 근거 활용을 넘어 기록의 전승 및 보존과정과 그 속에 개입되는 여러 배경적 요소까지 다루는 것으로 다각화될 필요가 있다.

영어초록

This thesis examined the status and inheritance and preservation aspects of diary materials during the Imjin War of Joseon Dynasty. The diary materials of the Imjin War which have been inherited until now are about 55 kinds. This amount includes all the materials that are assumed to be the handwritten diaries, the exclusive manuscripts that were copied and have been preserved by descendants, and the forms done in collections of literary works. 55 kinds of diary materials tried to be classified by characteristic because the researcher grasped that the ways and ranges to deal with the Imjin War are very different depending on recorders' age, position, or political and social standing as the diaries of the Imjin War were written through special and severe experiences of the war. The study tried to form the basis for approaching reality of the then war in various aspects by presenting the characteristics of the materials with their status because these diary materials are vertically and horizontally involved in one another like a net in space time of the Imjin War.
The value and meaning of the diary materials which emphasize the field experience and immediacy depend on how they are inherited while the original forms recorded by the writers are kept. Not to mention the first handwritten drafts, but for the even exclusive diary manuscripts that have been preserved until now, the rough outlines of how the original records of the diaries are changed need to be in advance understood in the process of inheritance and preservation(傳存) considering the point to be copied(傳寫) by descendants. Furthermore, in relation to the Imjin War, there are sometimes the cases to reveal ancestors' accomplishments hyperbolically. So it is positively necessary to take a close look at the editing process of the future generations through these cases and plan to utilize the diary materials of the Imjin War critically. The results which examined them through the several cases have found that the descendents of Seonjo of Joseon made it a rule to reflect the then preservation state faithfully when copying his handwritten diaries or recording them in the collections of literary works. They corrected the letters through communication, sometimes removed too many contents, and put footnotes in the parts that require supplementary explanation of the contents. But they tried to inherit the original as it is as they regularly marked 'missing (缺)' in the parts that the original texts are omitted or are not recognized even though the contents are disconnected. Because it was the record written by Seonjo of Joseon, they did not thoughtlessly damage his original intention. However, the diaries included in the practice collections of literary works published in modern times cannot overlook the point that the boundaries between the original records by recorders and the descendants' supplementary records need to be more precisely and clearly grasped by examining their descriptive context in greater detail.
