초록

이 논문은 (해례본)≪訓民正音≫에서 설명되는 ‘훈민정음’의 자음자와 모음자가 모두 각각 소리를 나타내는 발음기관을 상형하여 만들어지되 여기에 ‘一陰陽五行’의 원리에 따른 2*5=10개의 시스템에 적응하도록 고안되었음을 밝히고자 한 것이다. 이 시스템은 흔히 천간(天干)이라고 하는 십간(十干)의 체계와 같은 것인데, 십간의 체계는 실제로 이러한 ‘五行과 陰陽의 어울림’을 전제로 하여 이루어진 것이다. ‘甲乙丙丁戊己庚申壬癸’로 제시되는 십간은 기실 ‘甲乙[나무/木], 丙丁[불/火], 戊己[흙/土], 庚申[쇠/金], 壬癸[물/水]’의 오행으로 묶이며 ‘甲-丙-戊-庚-壬’은 각각 양(陽)에, ‘乙-丁-己-申-癸’는 각각 음(陰)에 해당한다. 오행을 ‘木-火-土-金-水’의 순서로 배열하는 이러한 십간의 배열 방식은 훈민정음 자음자를 ‘아(牙)[木]-설(舌)[火]-순(脣)[土]-치(齒)[金]-후(喉)[水]’의 순서로 배열한 이유와 닿아 있으며, 그 내적 논리는 ‘ㅣ’를 제외한 모음자가 ‘ㅗ/ㅠ[水]-ㅏ/ㅕ[木]-ㅜ/ㅛ[火]-ㅓ/ㅑ[金]..ㆍ/ㅡ[土]’의 순서로 설명되는 방식과 연결된다. (해례본)≪訓民正音≫에서의 ‘一陰陽五行’의 원리를 이해하기 위해서는 특히 자음자의 설명에 나오는 ‘계하(季夏)’의 문제와 모음자의 설명에 나오는 ‘토왕지절(土旺之節)’의 개념에 대해 이해할 필요가 있다. 나아가 초종성의 구성이나 합자의 원리, 사성의 배열 등이나 심지어 제자해-초성해-중성해-종성해-합자해의 5해가 각각 ‘물-나무-불-쇠-흙’의 순서로 이루어지고 풀이 부분 전체가 ‘본문[陽]-요결[陰]’의 짝으로 이루어진 방식조차도 ‘一陰陽五行’ 및 ‘십간(十干)’의 배열 원리가 체화된 결과로 볼 수 있다. 이러한 점들을 고려할 때, ‘훈민정음’이 동양 철학의 근본을 꿰뚫고 이를 바탕으로 한 자연과학적 분석을 인간학적 관점에서 우리의 소리 체계에 적용한 체계임을 이해할 수 있다.

영어초록

The essential debate of this study is the principles of consonants and vowels in Hunminjeongeum[character] which were invented based on the shapes of vocal organs, the Yin-Yang and Five-Elements school. By doing so, we can call in question of fundamental mechanism of Korean consonants and vowels can originally produces the 2⨯5 = 10 combination according to the binary system of the Yin-Yang and the pentacyclic system of Five-Elements school.
This combinational system bears a clear resemblance to the Heavenly Stems[天干] system, which also presupposes the combination of the Yin-Yang and the Five-Elements school. Ten Heavenly Stems[十干], which is sequentially presented with the order of ‘甲乙丙丁戊己庚申壬癸’, can be categorized into both binary and pentacyclic systems accordingly. The ten components of Ten Heavenly Stems[十干] can be divided into five combinations according to the Five-Elements school; 甲乙[tree/木], 丙丁[fire/火], 戊己[earth/土], 庚申[metal/金], 壬癸[water/水]. Each odd (甲-丙-戊-庚-壬) and even (乙-丁-己-申-癸) numbered components of Ten Heavenly Stems[十干] are bifurcated into Yang[陽] and Yin[陰] accordingly.
The arranging method of Five-Elements in order of ‘木-火-土-金-水’ is are structurally analogous to the arranging system of Hunminjeongeum consonants, ‘Dentals(牙)[木]-Tongue sounds(舌)[火]-Soft palatal sounds (脣)[土]-Hard palate(齒)[金]-Uvular sounds(喉)[水]’. The juxtaposition of Ten Heavenly Stems[十干] and Hunminjeongeum consonants presents theoretical framework to interpret Hunminjeongeum vowel system which is categorized into ‘ㅗ/ㅠ[水], -ㅏ/ㅕ[木], -ㅜ/ㅛ[火], -ㅓ/ㅑ[金], ㆍ/ㅡ[土]’ except for ‘ㅣ’. It is necessary to understand the concept of ‘lately summar[季夏]’ regarding the description of consonants and ‘the season when the energy of earth is flourished[土旺之節]’ to properly delve into the Five-Elements in Hunminjeongeum. Furthermore, other examples; the combination of initial sound, nucleus, and final consonant, Four tones in Korean, the arranging order of Five explanation which is arranged in order of ‘water-tree-fire-metal-earth’ draw an analogy between the Five-Elements (and Yin-Yang) and the principles of Hunmingeoneum. Also, the fact that explanation part of Hunminjeongeum is bifurcated into ‘main text (陽; Yang)’ and ‘abridged text (陰; Yin)’ supports the theory.
Proceeding from what has been discussed above, it should be concluded that Hunminjeongeum has been largely based on the fundamental principles of Oriental philosophy to analyze natural phenomena from the anthropological perspectives with the application to Korean sound system.
