四書의 『詩經』 인용 양상에 대한 일고찰 (A Study on the Quotations of the 『Book of Odes(詩經)』 in the Four Books(四書))

초록

본 논문은 유학의 필독서로서 장구한 영향력을 행사해 온 四書를 연구대상으로 하여 『시경』 인용의 유형과 그 특징을 고찰하고자 하는 목적에서 작성되었다. 이를 위하여 본 논문에서는 우선 사서의 『시경』 인용 현황을 개괄적으로 살펴본 후, 사서의 『시경』 인용 현황을 ‘『시경』의 原義를 수용하는 경우’와 ‘『시경』의 원의를 변용하는 경우’로 나누어서 고찰해 보았다.
『논어』에서는 『시경』을 인용하면서 대다수의 경우 별도의 인용 표시 없이 곧바로 『시경』 구절을 노출하고 있었는데, 이를 통해 춘추 시대에 『시경』을 통하여 자신의 의사를 전달하는 ‘賦詩言志’의 관습을 살펴볼 수 있었다. 『맹자』에서는 대부분의 경우 ‘詩曰’이나 ‘詩云’이라는 말로 『시경』에서 인용하였음을 명시하였고, 또 역시 대부분 문맥이 일치하는 『시경』 구절을 인용하였는데, 이를 통해 맹자가 논리를 개진하는 과정에서 『시경』의 권위에 의지하여 자신의 논지를 강화하는 효과를 노렸음을 알 수 있었다. 『대학』에서의 『시경』 인용에서 주목할 부분은 『시경』에서 한 글자씩 摘取하여 논의를 전개하는 유형으로, 三綱領 중의 新民과 止於至善을 설명하기 위하여 각각 ‘新’자와 ‘止’자가 들어간 『시경』 구절을 인용하는 ‘斷字取義’의 유형에 대해 고찰해 보았다. 『대학』과 『중용』에서는 모두 한 장에서 연속적으로 『시경』을 인용하여 논지를 전개하고 심화시켜 나가는 특징을 보였으며, 그 출전이 『시경』임을 명확하게 표시함으로써 『시경』의 권위에 의탁하여 논리의 강화를 추구하였다.

영어초록

This paper is based on the study of the whole Four Books(四書) which has exerted a long-standing influence as a must-read book of Confucianism. After classifying and presenting the formal types in the quotation of the 『Book of Odes(詩經)』, this paper is written for the purpose of examining each typical feature. For this purpose, first of all, after inspecting the current situation of the quotation of the 『Book of Odes』 in the Four Books generally, and it was divided into two cases: accepting the original meaning of the 『Book of Odes』 and transforming the original meaning of the 『Book of Odes』.
As a result of examining the current situation of the quotation of the 『Book of Odes』 each Four books, the following points were found: In the 『Analects of Confucius(論語)』, the majority of the cases directly exposed the 『Book of Odes』 phrases without a separate quotation mark, which allowed us to observe the custom of ‘Writing a poem to express one’s meaning(賦詩言志)’ which delivered one’s own thoughts through the 『Book of Odes』 in the Chūnqiū(春秋, Spring and Autumn) Period.
In the 『Discourse of Mencius(孟子)』, in most cases, it specified that the phrases were cited from the 『Book of Odes』 with the word ‘the poem said(詩曰)’ or ‘the poem said(詩云)’, and also cited the phrases of the 『Book of Odes』 corresponding with the context. Through this, it can be seen that Mencius aimed at effect of strengthening his point of argument by relying on the authority of the 『Book of Odes』 in the process of expressing logic.
The noteworthy part of the quotation in the 『Great Learning(大學)』 was the type of developing a discussion by picking up one letter from the 『Book of Odes』. In order to explain the Sinmin(新民, renewing the people with one’s own bright virtue) and Jieojiseon(止於至善, reaching the highest good and maintaining the condition) among the three Principles(綱領), I considered that the type of ‘Cutting off a sentence and taking one’s meaning(斷章取義)’ which quoted the phrases of the 『Book of Odes』 containing ‘Sin(新)’ and ‘Ji(止)’.
In both the 『Great Learning(大學)』 and the 『Doctrine of the Mean(中庸)』, it showed the characteristic of developing and deepening the argument by quoting the 『Book of Odes』 continuously in one chapter. And by clearly indicating that the source was the 『Book of Odes』, then it pursued the strengthening of the logic with depending on the authority of the 『Book of Odes』.
