수륙재의 한국화에 대한 일고찰 (Consideration of the Koreanizing of Suryukjae)

초록

이 글은 발상지 중국에서 현재 행해지는 수륙재와 한국수륙재를 비교하여, 한국수륙재의 특성을 思惟와 行爲라는 두 관점으로 분석한 글이다.
첫째, 수륙재의 ‘수륙’에 대해, 중국에서는 ‘수륙’을 중생의 의보처(依報處)라고 이해하고 하는 데 비해, 한국에서는 ‘물’과 ‘뭍’이라는 현실적인 공간에서부터 성인과 범부라는 차원으로 이해하거나 용왕굿이라는 이해까지 다양하게 나타난다. 또 수륙재회가 열리게 되었음을 네 곳의 공간에 알리는 역할을 부여받은 네 사자의 이름에 ‘연월일시(年月日時)’라는 ‘시간 개념’을 투영함으로써 시공의 일치를 추구하는 ‘불일불이(不一不二)’의 중도적 세계관을 보여주고 있다. 또 수륙의문을 요점 위주로 신찬(新撰)하거나 현실적 관점에서 의례를 재편(再編)하고 있다. 설판(設辦) 상황에 따라 의례를 봉행하기 위해 『지반문』･『중례문』･『결수문』이라는 대･중･소의 의문을 편찬하거나 현실을 반영한 영산작법을 합편하거나, 상위･중위･하위의 순서로 소청하면서도 하위의 영적 존재를 먼저 대령하여 업장을 없애고 선근을 닦게 하는 의례 차서를 재편하고 있다. 이는 역동적이고 융통성 있는 사유의 결과라고 할 수 있다.
둘째, 수륙재에서 설행되는 沐浴의식과 侍輦의식에서 ‘행위’의 구체성을 볼 수 있다. 목욕을 할 때도 상위와 중위의 성현들을 위해서는 욕실로 안내하는 데 그치는 것은 한국과 중국의 수륙재의식이 같다. 다만 한국의 수륙재에는 하위(下位)의 존재들에게는, 일일이 치질을 도와주거나(작양지진언), 입을 가시게 하고(수구진언), 얼굴과 손을 씻게 해준다(세수면진언). 그리고 종이옷으로 해탈 옷으로 변화하게 하는 화의(化衣)의식도 옷을 주는 진언(授衣진언), 옷을 입는 진언(着衣진언), 옷매무새를 단정히 하는 진언(整衣진언) 등이 시설되고 있으며, 수인(手印)이 결인(結印)되고 있다.
또 법회도량에 부처님을 모시는 시련(侍輦)의식을 구체적으로 설행한다. 불화를 내거는 괘불이운의식은 티베트 등지에서도 쉽게 확인되는 모습이지만 삼신(三身)위패를 연(輦)에 실어 법회도량으로 모시는 것은 국왕의 행차를 본 뜬 의식으로, 한국수륙재의 구체성이라고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

This essay considers the characteristics of Korean Suryukjae(水陸齋, the offering ritual for land and water) in terms of both thinking and doing by comparison to the original Chinese ritual.
Firstly, the ‘Suryuk’ of Suryukjae, it means Uibocheo(依報處, the venue for Dependent recompense) for Sentient beings in China. However, it has various other meanings from the exterior place of land and water, to ordinary beings and saints, and even to Youngwanggut(the ritual for the Dragon King). It represents the world view of the Middle way, neither one nor two(不一不二) which pursues the harmony of time and space by adding the concept of time, that is, year, month, date and hour to the names of the four messengers who are in charge of announcing the opening to the four cardinal directions.
Also, the ritual program for Suryukjae is compiled anew by summarizing the main point or reorganized practically. In accordance with the circumstance of performing the ritual, it is organized into large, medium or small system, that is; Gyeolsumun(結手文, making mudrās), Jungryemun(中禮文, the ritual program in epitome) and Jibanmun(志磐文, the ritual program by Giban), and the rules of conduct for Yeonsanbeopseok(靈山法席, Dharma seat at Vulture Peak) are combined with Suryukjae by reflecting reality. The ritual is reorganized, so that Socheong(召請, invitation) is performed in the order of upper, middle and lower class of the soul but Daeryeong(對靈, the rite of calling in the soul) is performed for the lower class first to eliminate Karmic obstacles and cultivate wholesome roots. These are the results of the dynamic and flexible thought.
Secondly, the rite of bathing(沐浴儀式) and Siryeon(侍輦, the rite of serving a sedan chair) are defined in Korean Suryukjae. When the rite of bathing is performed, it is the common for the soul of the upper and middle class to be conducted into the bathroom in both Korea and China. But for the soul of the lower class, the Korean ritual involves the following; to help each one brush one’s teeth and gargle, to clean the face and hands in the rite of bathing, followed by giving each other clothes, dressing and straightening the dress in the rite of clothing(化衣儀式) during which the paper clothes are transformed into those for the nirvana. Mudra is also practiced.
Again, the purpose of Siryeon is to escort Buddha to the Dharma hall. Though hanging a painted Buddhist scroll is common in Tibet, too, in the Korean ritual, the memorial tablets for the three legendary founders of Korea are placed onto a sedan chair and escorted into the Dharma hall, emulating the king’s royal procession. This demonstrates the externalization of Korean Suryukjae well.
