일인칭 시점 딱지본 대중소설 연구 (A Study on Six‐pence Pop Novels Described from the First‐person Perspective)

초록

본 연구는 딱지본 대중소설 중 일인칭 서술 시점이 활용된 작품들을 소개하고, 식민지 서적출판문화의 장 안에서 이들 작품이 지닌 특징과 의미를 살피는 것을 목적으로 삼는다. 일반적으로 일인칭 시점은 1920년대 이후 유학생 지식인들이 주로 잡지에 게재된 단편소설을 통해 실험한 것으로 알려져 있다. 하지만 일인칭 서술 시점은 번역 및 번안의 경로를 통해 더 이른 시기부터 실험되었으며, 특히 『(신소설)형월』(1915)의 일인칭 시점 서술은 번역 및 번안이 아닌 신소설의 서사 전통을 계승한 가운데 이루어진 것이라 주목할 만하다.
1920년대 이후 몇몇 딱지본 대중소설은 소위 고급문예의 장에서 적극 활용되던 일인칭 시점의 서술 방식을 수용하여 이를 대량생산의 장으로 확산시키고자 했다. 특히, 『(가정소설)해혹』, 『(신소설)표랑의 루』, 『(애정소설)애루몽』은 일인칭 시점의 서술 방식을 딱지본 대중소설에서 실험한 보기 드문 사례에 해당한다. 이들 작품이 일인칭 시점 서술을 통해 각기 다른 의미와 효과를 발생시키고 있다는 점도 주목할 만하다. 예컨대, 『(가정소설)해혹』은 도덕과 윤리로 포장된 주인공의 호의가 실제로는 지루한 일상에 새로운 자극을 원하는 성적인 욕망을 품고 있었음을 효과적으로 드러내고 있으며, 『(신소설)표랑의 루』는 화자인 ‘나’를 실제 작가와 일치시켜 독자로 하여금 화자의 내면 고백과 소설 이야기에 더욱 몰입하도록 기능한다. 『(애정소설)애루몽』의 경우, 다양한 직업을 전전하는 룸펜 지식인의 고뇌와 좌절을 통해 제국주의 침탈의 역사적 맥락이나 자본주의 체제의 냉혹함을 날카롭게 드러내고 있다.
이러한 시도는 딱지본 대중소설의 독자에게 고급문예의 내용과 형식을 확산시키는 한편, 소위 고급문예의 독자를 딱지본 대중소설의 장으로 끌어 들이기 위한 시도였다. 이처럼, 일인칭 시점 딱지본 대중소설은 식민지 서적출판문화의 다층적 성격을 이해하기 위한 흥미로운 사례가 된다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to introduce the works in which the first person narrative view is utilized among six‐pence pop novels, and to examine their characteristics and meaning within the ground of colony book publishing culture. In general, it is known that the first person view was experimented by intellectuals with experience of studying abroad since the 1920s, mainly through short stories published in magazines. However, the viewpoint of first person narrative was experimented from an earlier period through the path of translation and adaptation, and it is noteworthy that the first person view narrative in a new novel, Hyeongwol (1915) was written while inheriting the narrative tradition of the new novel, not translation or adaptation.
Since the 1920s, several six‐pence pop novels tried to expand the narrative method of first person view, which was actively used in the so‐called high‐level literary field, into the field of mass production. In particular, “(family novel) Haeok”, “(new novel) Ru of Pyorang”, and “(affectionate novel) Aerumong” correspond to rare cases where the narrative of first person view was experimented in a six‐pence pop novel. It is noteworthy that these works generate different meanings and effects through the narrative of the first person view. For instance, “(family novel) Haeok” effectively reveals that the protagonist's favor, wrapped in morality and ethics, actually had a sexual desire for new stimulation in boring daily life. “(New novel) Ru of Pyorang” functions to make readers more immersed in the narrator's inner confession and novel story by matching the speaker 'I' with the actual author. In the case of “(affectionate novel) Aerumong”, through the agony and frustration of the lumpen intellectuals who have passed down various professions, the historical context of the imperial invasion and the harshness of the capitalist system are sharply revealed.
This attempt spreads the content and form of high‐level literature to readers of the six‐pence pop novels whereas it was an attempt to draw the so‐called high‐level literary readers into the ground of the six‐pence pop novels. As such, the six‐pence pop novel from the first person perspective is an interesting example for understanding the multi‐layered nature of colony book publishing culture.
