白雲 實相觀의 일고찰 (Consideration of Backwoon’s view of the true nature of reality(實相觀))

초록

선의 궁극의 목적은 현상계에 내재된 제법의 본성을 得悟하여 실존의 현실 속에서 覺者의 삶을 영위하는데 있다. 백운선의 핵심 또한 제법존재의 理法이 일상의 현상 속에서 곧바로 전개되는 실상관의 구현에 있다. 현상 속에 내재된 본질의 체득과 그 체득에 기초한 현실 삶에서의 실상 구현이 백운선의 본질인 것이다.
다시 말해 백운은 연기에 입각한 이법과 이것이 확장된 無相‧眞性의 실상도리를 선의 요체로 삼고 있다. 이른바 진리의 본체인 불성, 열반까지도 모두 공하므로 얻을 수 없다는 無所得空, 不可得의 第一義空觀과 不二觀, 나아가 無爲, 無事로 펼쳐지는 제법실상에 대한 대승관이 그 중심 기저에 자리하고 있는 것이다.
이러한 백운의 실상관에 ‘作用卽性’과 ‘平常無事’가 살펴지는데, 이 역시 본성은 현상계를 떠나 존재하지 않는다는 근원적 이법에 바탕하고 있다. 작용즉성은 중생계의 유위작용 뿐 아니라 견성자의 진정견해에서 드러나는 무위계 理의 작용까지 포함하어 있으며, 평상무사는 옳고 그름의 상대적 단견이나 인식 분별을 떠난 본심의 작용이다. 즉 백운의 실상관은 본래지와 현상계, 나아가 覺不覺을 초월한 제법의 작용전체를 의미하고 있다.
이처럼 깨달음의 일상적 체득과 공능을 도의 핵심으로 강조하고 있는 백운은 나아가 간화선 등 규정화된 기존 수행법의 문제점을 경계하며 無修之修의 수행으로 곧바로 깨달음에 이를 것을 강조하고 있다. 실상관이 수행에까지 깊은 영향을 미치고 있는 것이다.

영어초록

Backwoon Kyunghan was a Seonsa (禪師, Zen master) in the late Koryo Dynasty. His approach to Seon has always been regarded as Musimseon (無心禪, No-mind meditation). However, this essay considers the true form of the Middle Way as the essence of his Musimseon.
The concept of the true form of the Middle Way largely originated from the thought of Mahayana Buddhism and early Seonsas of Patriarchal Seon. The main theme of the true form of the Middle Way is traced to Emptiness and Non-duality(不二). It means that all phenomena reflect the principle of the true form of the Middle Way based on the nature of Emptiness in its entirety. Therefore, the truth of Emptiness and Non-duality can be directly found in phenomena in this real world. It is the main content of his view of the true nature of reality that to realize the Dharma of Emptiness and Non-duality is the right insight of the Middle Way.
His view of the true nature of reality is represented by the lines, “to be active is the very nature (作用卽性)” and “the ordinary life with no-trouble (平常無事)”. That means to be active is the real nature meaning that all activities in real life are the natural movements of truth, and activities of all things in this world are no less than those of Emptiness and Non-duality. This implies there are two states: attaining enlightenment and not attaining it or Enlightenment and Unenlightenment. He explains the true form of all dharmas with these two states.
The ordinary life with no-trouble is the everyday life of one who has realized the Way of Emptiness and Non-duality. It is the ultimate life that human beings aim for - the freedom to carry out No-mind in this world, away from all kinds of manipulation and right and wrong, and both enlightened mind and unenlightened mind.
The ultimate aim of Seon is to live a life with true enlightenment, realizing truth which comes to light in this phenomenal world. His view of the true nature of reality has a profound effect on meditation. He exercises caution against the regulation of the batch way of meditation like key-phrase meditation and considers the true union directly with No-mind as important, a view deeply related to the view of early Patriarchal Seon.
Likewise, Backwoon’s view of the true nature of reality has its meaning as the essence of No-mind and comes to light in his general view of meditation at the same time. To sum up, the basis of his thought about Seon lies in the thought of Patriarchal Seon which regards natural freedom of originally not a single thing (本來無一物) which is based on the true form of the Middle Way, as the aim of enlightenment and the ultimate perfection.
