초록

이 논문은 1963년 6월에 창간한 월간시사종합잡지 『세대』를 중심으로 ‘한일국교정상화’와 관련된 일본담론과 동시기에 연재된 최인훈의 장편소설 『회색의 의자』를 대비하여 한국인의 정체성을 살펴보고자 하였다.
1951년에 공표, 1952년에 발효된 ‘샌프란시스코 평화조약’에 의거하여 아시아 대공방위전선의 전략적 파트너로 격상한 일본과 오랜 숙적 관계에 있던 한국의 국교정상화가 시급히 요구되었다. 미국의 권유와 강요가 한국과 일본을 압박하는 가운데, 대내외적 이미지 쇄신과 발전의 장애에 교착된 한일양국은 떨떠름하고 못마땅한 채로 그 분위기에 부응해야 했다. 일본과 한국 양국 각각이 맞닥뜨린 국교수교의 난제는 어쩔 수 없이 실행하고 체결할 수밖에 없었다.
일본에 소극적인 수교협상에 비해서 한국의 군사정권은 변화된 경제, 외교, 안보, 정권연장, 개발 등의 근대화 프로젝트를 입안, 실행하기 위해서는 일본과의 수교가 시급하고 절대적으로 필요했다. 대다수 국민의 반대와 학생들의 반대시위를 무릅쓰고도 은밀하고 굴욕적으로 강행한 한일수교는 실제로 한국의 발전과 근대화를 위해서는 아프게 받아들여야 하는 시대적 과제였다. 처음에는 찬동 의사를 펼쳤다가 반대 논리로 돌아선 월간 『사상계』에 대항하여 군사정권의 프로파간다 역할을 자임하고 한일수교 논리를 적극적이고 지속적으로 설파한 『세대』 잡지는 문제적인 작가인 최인훈을 섭외하여 『광장』에 이은 『회색의 의자』를 연재하게 했다. 주인공 독고준이 친일매판자본가의 현호성의 집안에 들어가 기거하고 제2의 현호성으로 되기 직전의 선택을 기본 줄거리로 하는 ‘구조적 동질성’ 논리를 당대적 시사초점이었던 ‘한일국교정상화’ 논의와 심층구조로 연결시켜 소기의 목적을 달성하려고 했다.
그러나 최인훈은 잡지 편집진의 요구와 이해관계에 부응하는 가운데 자신이 그 사안을 문제화하여 어쩔 수 없이 받아들여야 하는 맥락임에도 불구하고 짚어봐야 하는 문제들을 에세이 담론을 통하여 제시하고자 했다. 현호성의 처제인 이유정의 방으로 독고준이 들어가는 마지막 장면의 결단의 불가피성을 수락하면서도 ‘사랑과 시간’의 방법적 사고와 일본의 재동질화에 이질적인 타자-주체로서 남아 자신의 실존적 주체를 보존, 생존해야 하는 한국인, 독고준을 오롯이 생각하게 하는 것이다. ‘회색’의 부정적 이미지를 반전시키는 독고준-심층구조-핵심주제-당대초점-지정학적 난제를 『회색의 의자』는 군사정권의 프로파간다의 미디어 전략이 크고 드높게 발하는 한 구석에서 모기만한 목소리로 당차고 명민하게 소설이라는 형식으로 문제화하고 있다. 그 지점에서 『세대』지의 일본담론과 『회색의 의자』는 정반대의 흥미로운 자기 전개를 보이는 것이다.

This paper was published in June 1963, focusing on the monthly magazine “SeDae(세대; Generation)”, which was published in June 1963, and the identity of Koreans in preparation for the Japanese discourse related to the normalization of diplomatic relations between Korea and Japan and Choi In-hoon's novel “The Chair of Gray(회색의 의자)”.
The South Korean diplomatic relations with Japan, which had been in a long-standing relationship with Japan, which was upgraded to a strategic partner of the Asian Air Defense Front in accordance with the ‘San Francisco Peace Treaty’, which was promulgated in 1951 and entered into force in 1952, were urgently required. While the US recommendation and enforcement pressed Korea and Japan, the two countries, which were stalled by the obstacles of internal and external image renewal and development, had to respond to the atmosphere with trembling and disapproval.

The “SeDae(세대; Generation)” magazine, which initially acted as a propaganda of the military regime against the monthly “ideological system” that turned to the opposite logic after opening the pro-democracy, and actively and continuously preached the logic of the Korea-Japan diplomatic relations, The main character, Doko-joon, entered the house of Hyun Ho-sung, a pro-Japanese capitalist, and tried to achieve the purpose of the project by linking the “structural homogeneit” logic, which was the main point of the present day, to the discussion and in-depth structure of the logic of the Korea-Japan diplomatic relations.
However, Choi In - hoon responded to the needs and interests of the magazine editors and tried to present the problems that he had to address through the essay discourse, despite the fact that he had to question the issue and accept it inevitably. While accepting the inevitable decision of the last scene in which the poet enters the room of the prefecture, the sister of the prefecture, he is left as a heterogeneous batter-subject to the methodical thinking of ‘love and time’ and the re-homogeneity of Japan. The “The Chair of Gray(회색의 의자)” is a novel in which the media strategy of the military regime is loud and high in a corner where the media strategy of the military regime is large and high, and it is a novel in a novel that is in a form of a mosquito-like voice. At that point, the Japanese discourse of the “SeDae(세대; Generation)” and the “The Chair of Gray(회색의 의자)” show the opposite interesting self-development.
