초록

이 글은 본인의 장편 영화 <괴물, 유령, 자유인>에서 유령의 의미와 논하며 유령의 연출에 대해 해제한다. <괴물, 유령, 자유인>에서 유령은 규범과 질서 안에서 차별과 억압, 슬픔 속에 삶을 살아가는 퀴어들을 상징한다. 그런 존재들의 존재가 지워지고 가시화되지 않았다는 의미에서 이 영화의 유령은 비존재라고 할 수 있다. <괴물, 유령, 자유인>은 이 비존재들이 어떻게 삶을 긍정할 수 있는지를 고찰하는 영화다. <괴물, 유령, 자유인>에 등장하는 유령은 현대의 ‘유령’ 영화들과 함께 ‘슬픈 기억을 현재에재생시키는 유령’의 의미를 공유한다. 이런 유령은 환영이지만 하나의 정체성을 갖는 존재가 아니라 복수의 사건들이자 과거/현재/미래가 겹쳐진기억들이다. 이 영화는 스피노자의 영원성을 기본 테제로 하는데, 영원의경험은 전체 세계 속에서 자신을 인식하는 것, 즉 모든 개체들의 집합이 세계를 이루며 자신이 그 집합의 일부임을 인식하는 것이다. 그것은 그 집합속에 있는 자신이 세계를 이루는 유일무이한 존재라는 것을 깨닫는 것이기도 하다. <괴물, 유령, 자유인>에서 유령은 이런 영원성을 통과하며 ‘자유인’이 된다. ‘자유인’은 영원성을 인식하게 된 존재로서, 존재를 긍정하고 세계를 사랑한다. <괴물, 유령, 자유인>은 이러한 스피노자적 관점에서의 영원성을 비연대기적인 시간으로 구성된 비선형적 세계로 펼쳐낸다.
영원성은 연대기적 시간에서는 인식될 수 없기 때문에 이 영화는 패치워크와 같은 방식으로 비인과적으로 이질적인 사건들을 연결하고 분화시킨다. 유령은 이러한 비선형적 세계를 배회하는 일종의 사건이자 묘사라는의미를 갖는다. 즉 비선형적 서사는 단일하지 않은 정체성을 갖는 유령, 복수의 기억으로 유령을 작동시킨다. 그리고 이 영화 안에, 영화 밖 세계의참여를 가능케 한다. <괴물, 유령, 자유인>은 일종의 메타-영화로서 ‘영화찍기’가 주는 전망, 다르게 말해 희망을 보여준다. <괴물, 유령, 자유인>은 슬픈 비존재 유령이 자유인이 되는 과정을 보여준다. 그렇게 이 영화는 질서와 규범을 전복시키는 소수성의 힘을 긍정하며, ‘기쁨’과 해방을 향해나아간다.

영어초록

This article discusses the meaning of the ghost in the film Blessedness: Monsters and Specters and analyzes its directing. In this film, the ghost symbolizes queer who live in discrimination, oppression, and sorrow within norms and order. In the sense that these queer lives have been erased and has not been visualized, the ghosts in this film can be called as ‘the non-beings’. Blessedness: Monsters and Specters is a film that examines how these non-beings can affirm their lives. The ghost that appears in Blessedness: Monsters and Specters shares the meaning of “ghost replaying sad memories in the present” with postmodern “ghost” films. Although these ghosts are illusions, they are not entities with a single identity. We can say that, however, they are multiple events or overlapping memories of the past/present/future. The basic theme of this film is Spinoza's eternity. The experience of eternity is the perception of oneself within the world, that is, the recognition that the set of individuals constitutes the world and that one is part of that set. It is also to realize that each one of us in the set are the one and only beings. Understanding this eternity, we affirm and love our existence, In Blessedness: Monsters and Specters, the ghost passes through this eternity and becomes a ‘free person’. A ‘free person’ is a being who has come to recognize eternity, affirms its existence and loves the world. Blessedness: Monsters and Specters unfolds eternity from this Spinozan point of view as a non-linear world composed of non-chronological time. Since eternity cannot be perceived in chronological time, the film connects and differentiates disparate events in a noncausal way, in a patchwork-like manner. This ghost is an event and ‘description’ that wanders in the non-linear world. In other words, the non-linear narrative activates the ghost with a non-single identity and multiple memories. And it enables the participation of the world outside the film within the film. Blessedness: Monsters and Specters is meta-movie, that shows the ‘vision’ of filming, in other words, hope. Blessedness: Monsters and Specters shows the process of becoming the ‘free person’ through the non-being ghosts and the film itself filled with such sad ghosts. In this way, this film affirms the power of minority to subvert order and norms, and moves toward 'joy' and liberation.
