초록

본 연구는 주돈이(周敦頤, 1017~1073)의 『태극도(太極圖)』와 『태극도설(太極圖說)』을 디지털인문학(Digital Humanities)적 방법을 통해 새로운 시각과 방법으로 분석, 이해하고자 하였다.
『태극도』와 『태극도설』에 대한 연구가 대부분 ‘우주론(宇宙論, cosmology)’이란 용어를 자주 사용하지만 그 함의는 일정하지는 않았다. 우주론은 연구자가 우주의 기원과 진화를 설명하고자하는 경우에는 ‘우주발생론(cosmogony)’을 뜻하지만 우주의 구조와 본질을 연구하는 경우에는 ‘형이상학(metaphysics)’을 뜻한다. 『태극도』와 『태극도설』의 기존의 연구 경향은 우주발생론적 관점과 형이상학적 관점으로 이루어졌다고 할 수 있다.
본 연구는 『태극도』의 이미지를 재구성함으로써 『태극도』가 ‘상하 대칭(vertical symmetry)’과 ‘동형 반복(isomorphic repetition)’의 구조를 가지고 있으며 이러한 구조는 우주생성론보다는 형이상학적 관점을 드러내는 것임을 논했다.
다음으로 『태극도설』 텍스트 정보를 재조직하여 의미망 그래프를 구성하고 『태극도』와 비교하였다. 이러한 재조직화는 우주생성론적 관점과 형이상학적 관점을 각각 반영하여 이루어졌다. 형이상학적 관점에서 구축된 『태극도설』의 의미망 그래프는 『태극도』의 동형 반복의 구조, 즉 원형의 태극(무극)과 연관되며, 태극 개념의 함의인 ‘근원’과 ‘총체성’의 개념과 연관됨을 논하였다. 또한 이러한 의미망 그래프의 형태와 구조는 이황(李滉, 1502~1570)의 『천명도(天命圖)』도 연관된다. 따라서 본 연구는 추가적으로 『천명도설(天命圖說)』의 텍스트 정보를 재구성하여 다시 의미망 그래프를 구축하고 『태극도설』의 의미망 그래프와 비교하였다.

영어초록

This study aims to analyze and understand the Taijitu (Diagram of the Ultimate of the Great) and the Explanation of the Taijitu by Zhou Dunyi (周敦頤, 1017-1073) with a new perspective of Digital Humanities.
Most studies on the Taijitu and the Explanation of the Taijitu frequently use the term, cosmology’; however, the connotation is not constant. Cosmology means ‘cosmogony’ when researchers are trying to explain the origin and evolution of the universe, but it means ‘metaphysics’ when studying the structure and nature of the universe. The existing research trends in the Taijitu and the Explanation of the Taijitu consisted of cosmogonic and metaphysical perspectives.
By rearranging the image of the Taijitu, this study discusses that the Taijitu has the structures of ‘vertical symmetry’ and ‘isomorphic repetition’, and that the structures reveal a metaphysical point of view rather than cosmogony.
Next, I structure data excerpted from the Explanation of the Taijitu to construct a semantic network graph. These rearranging projects are executed by reflecting the perspective of cosmogony and metaphysics, respectively. The semantic network graph of the Explanation of the Taijitu constructed from a metaphysical viewpoint is interestingly related to the Taijitu’s structure of ‘isomorphic repetition,’ that is, the circle shape of the Ultimate of the Great (the Ultimate of Non-Being), the implications of which are the concepts of begetter and totality. Also, the feature and structure of this semantic graph (knowledge graph) can be associated with the Cheonmyeongdo (Diagram of the Heavenly Mandate) by Yi Hwang (李滉, 1502~1570). Therefore, this study additionally structures data excerpted from the Explanation of the Cheonmyeongdo, builds a semantic graph again, and compares it with the semantic network graph of the Explanation of the Taijitu.
