Identification of the Audience of Lady Wisdom’s Speech and Its Subsequent Effect on the Interpretation of Proverbs 8:6-9

Proverbs 8 is considered a self-contained unit in chapters 1-9. In the earlier chapters, a father appeals to his son or sons to take wisdom. But in chapter 8, Lady Wisdom’s speech is addressed to the general public who are found easily in the main streets and markets (8:1-3). This paper will examine the characteristics of the audience of Lady Wisdom’s speech. They are specified as simple ones and fools (8:4-5). Lady Wisdom emphasizes that even they need to learn wisdom. They are beyond the circle of the educated. Wisdom can be thought to be something intellectual and philosophical. Wisdom may be perceived to be difficult and tortuous for ordinary people to acquire it. 8:6-9 has been understood as the characteristics of the contents of Lady Wisdom’s speech to be in the perspective of ethical or moral quality. However, we argue that 8:6-9 is to be understood in the communicative perspective. At this stage of speech in 8:6-9, Lady Wisdom is inviting her audience by promising that her speech will be easy to understand. 8:6-9 is a preparation for the audience. What is emphasized here is the aspect of being plain and straightforward of the speech that can be understood by even the uneducated simple people. The real content of Lady Wisdom’s speech is given in 8:10-31. The speech is concluded by 8:32-36. We try to prove our arguments by grammatical-linguistic analysis of the keywords in 8:6-9. We propose an alternative translation of 8:6-9 in comparison with other modern Bible translations.
