‘Sola fide’의 민중적 지평, 믿음과 종교적 주체에 관한 성찰 (‘Sola fide’ and Its Implications: A Reflection on Christian Faith and Religious Subject in Minjung Horizon)

초록

본 연구는 종교개혁운동의 중심 사상인 ‘오직 믿음으로(sola fide)’의 개념적함의를 온전히 포착하기 위해서는 민중적 지평에서 조명해야만 한다는 논점을갖고, 그 사상이 어떻게 공동체 윤리와 사회 변혁을 지향하는 방식으로 작동할수 있는지를 논의한다. 여기에는 근본주의 성향의 한국 개신교가 보인 신학적도착에 대한 비판의 의도가 있다. ‘오직 믿음으로’라는 논리로써 종교적 폐쇄성과불균형을 강화하는 한국교회의 실패를 지적하고, 그 신학적 왜곡이 사회적 소수자에 대한 배제와 극우주의 정치를 확대하는 방향으로 흘러가는 현실을 비판적으로 검토한다. 본 연구는 프로테스탄티즘의 의미를 믿음과 종교적 주체의 ‘관계’에주목하여 논의한다. 여기서 ‘주체’는 종교적 수동성을 지닌 존재가 아니라 ‘믿음’ 으로 맺은 신과의 관계 속에서 자신을 발견하고, 이 관계방식을 사회적 책임과윤리적 실천으로 이어가는 능동적 존재로 이해된다. 이런 인식을 바탕으로 종교개혁운동의 유산과 전통을 잇는 오늘의 방식을 설정한다. 이를 위해, 본 연구는두 가지 논거를 제시한다. 먼저 ‘sola fide’ 사상을 뒷받침하는 성서의 전거(典據) 로서 하박국과 바울의 사상을 검토하며, 이들이 논한 ‘믿음’이 어떻게 종교적‘주체’에 관한 기대로 귀결되는지를 검토한다. 그다음 16세기 종교개혁운동에관한 역사적 고찰을 시도한다. 프로테스탄티즘의 성격과 의미를 몇몇 주도적 신학자들의 삶과 사상, 역사적 사건들, 그 운동의 결과로 형성된 교리와 관습 등에서찾았던 기존 연구와는 달리, 그 운동을 가능케 한 당대의 ‘사람들’에 관심한 오즈맹(Steven Ozment)의 연구 방법론을 따라 ‘민중적 지평’에서 종교개혁운동의역사와 한국 개신교의 현실을 평가한다. 또한 본 연구는 현대 정치철학과 대화하며, ‘sola fide’ 사상이 신학적 원리를 넘어 사회적⋅공동체적 변혁의 힘으로재해석될 필요가 있음을 밝힌다. 이를 통해 한국 개신교가 사회적 책임에 관한 인식의 균형을 회복하고, 민중적 지평에서 믿음의 의미를 재발견하고 개혁의 길로 나아갈 것을 제안한다.

영어초록

This study argues that the implications of the central concept of the Reformation, ‘sola fide(by faith alone)’, are fully revealed when can be illuminated from the perspective of people’s movement, and discusses how this idea can work for community ethics and social transformation. The intention here is to critique the theological discrepancy of fundamentalist Korean Protestantism. It points out the failure of the Korean church to reinforce religious retardation and imbalance through the logic of ‘by faith alone’, and critically examines the ways in which its theological distortions have led to the exclusion of social minorities and the expansion of right-wing extremist politics. This study discusses the meaning of Protestantism by focusing on the ‘relationship’ between faith and religious subjects. Here, the ‘subject’ is not understood as a religiously passive being but as a radical agent who finds oneself in relationship with God through ‘faith’ and translates this relationship into social responsibility and ethical practice relevant to the request of the time. This understanding sets the stage for today’s way of engaging with the legacy of the Reformation. To this end, this study presents two arguments. First, it examines the ideas of Habakkuk and St. Paul as biblical precedents for the idea of ‘sola fide’, and how their discussion of faith leads to expectations about religious subjects. This is followed by a historical examination of the Reformation movement of the 16th century. Unlike previous studies that have sought the nature and meaning of Protestantism in the lives and ideas of a few leading theologians, in historical events, or in the doctrines and practices that emerged as results of the movement, this study follows Steven Ozment’s research methodology, which is concerned with the ‘people’ of the time who made the movement possible, and evaluates the history of the Reformation and the reality of Korean Protestantism by minjung hermeneutics. In dialogue with contemporary political philosophy, this study shows that the idea of ‘sola fide’ needs to be reinterpreted beyond a theological principle as a force for social and communal transformation. In doing so, it suggests that Korean Protestantism should balance its perception of social responsibility, rediscover the meaning of faith in a democratic horizon, and move forward on a path of reformation.
