애니메이션에서의 죽음의 의미와 연출 (The Meaning and Portrayal of Death in Animation)

초록

살아있는 것은 반드시 죽는다는 점에서 죽음은 생명의 필수요소이며 현실에서는 물론 애니메이션의 서사구조에서도 중요한 사건으로 작용한다. 하지만 특정연령대를 중심으로 전개된 과거 디즈니 애니메이션에서의 죽음은 권선징악의 구도에서 나타날 수 있는 단편적 죽음만을 그려왔다. 전 연령층을 대상으로 다양한 스토리를 담아 전개되고 있는 일본 애니메이션을위시한 현대 애니메이션에서의 죽음은 과거와 어떠한차이가 있으며 어떠한 의미를 담고 있는가? 본 논문에서는 현대 애니메이션에서의 죽음이 어떠한 형식으로연출되어 작품 속에 녹아있으며 내러티브 전개에서 어떠한 역할을 수행하는지를 사례를 통해 고찰하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 한국, 일본, 미국, 유럽의 작품들 중죽음이 표현되며 동시에 대중적 인지도를 지닌 작품들을 분석대상으로 선정하고 이들 작품에서 연출된 죽음에 대한 분석을 진행하였다. 본 논문에서는 죽음을 관객의 효용 가치에 따라 크게 ‘긍정적 죽음’과 ‘부정적죽음’으로 분류하여 고찰하였으며 세부 연출 부문은‘스토리 구조’, ‘캐릭터 연기’, ‘공간 및 색채’로 압축하여 죽음 연출에 대한 분석을 진행하였다.
분석결과 죽음의 연출은 서사구조, 연기, 영상색채등 구성요소들과의 상호작용을 통해 그 의미의 극대화를 이루고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 개시형 죽음은 긍정또는 부정의 분류를 떠나 관객의 감성적 반향이 얕은반면 단락형 죽음은 전개된 서사만큼 깊은 울림을 가져올 수 있음을 알 수 있었다. 관객의 호감범주 내에위치한 극중 캐릭터가 맞는 죽음은 관객의 복잡한 감흥을 유도하며 나아가 이러한 캐릭터의 죽음에 대한순응은 관객에게 의외성을 전달하는 강한 메시지로 작용됨을 알 수 있었다. 애니메이션 캐릭터의 죽음 대한항거는 일반적인 경우이나 삶에 대한 절실한 갈구는호감 또는 비호감을 의도한 캐릭터 설정에 의해 관객에게 좌절감과 비극 혹은 카타르시스를 전하고 있음을확인할 수 있었다. 본 연구에서 제시된 죽음 요소들의기술적 접목은 흔히 쓰이지 않는 새로운 방식의 죽음의 연출로 이어질 수 있음을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구의내용이 ‘긍정적 죽음 내에서 죽음을 갈망하는 서사’와같이 애니메이션에서의 다양한 죽음의 의미 연출에 기여할 수 있기를 희망한다.

영어초록

Death is an essential element of life in the sense that all living things must die. It is also an important event in the narrative structure of animation as well as in reality. However, the portrayals of death in past Disney animations, centered around a certain age group, have been fragmentary ones that can only occur in the composition of didacticism; in other words, good triumphing over evil. What differences do the portrayals of death in modern animation － including Japanese animation － which are developed into various stories targeting all ages, have in comparison to the animation of the past and what significance and meaning do they have? In this paper, through case studies, I have tried to examine in what way the portrayals of death in modern animation are directed and produced in the form of art and what roles the deaths play in narrative development. To do so, I have selected Korean, Japanese, American, and European artworks that portray deaths yet have public recognition for analysis. In this paper, I have classified deaths into two categories － 'positive death' and 'negative death － depending on the utility value of the audience and then examined them. The detailed rendering section was summarized into 'story structure,' 'acting character,' and 'space and color' and then analyzed for the portrayal of death.
My analysis revealed that the portrayal of death and its meaning are maximized by interacting with components such as narrative structure, acting, and image color. While initiation-type deaths bring a shallower emotional response from the audience regardless of their classification, either being positive or negative, it can be seen that termination-type deaths bring as much emotional response as is developed by the narrative. The death of a character in a play who is positioned within the audiences' appeal category induces the audiences' complex inspiration and furthermore, the adaptation toward the deaths of these characters works as a strong message that conveys a sense of unexpectedness to the audience. The resistance toward the deaths of the animated characters is a common case; however, it is confirmed that the desperate craving for life conveys frustration, tragedy, or catharsis to the audience according to the character setting that is intended either to be liked or disliked. It was found that the technical integration of the death factors suggested in this study are not commonly used and can lead to a new way of portraying death. It is my hope that this study can contribute to various portrayals and meanings of deaths in animation like 'a narrative that aspires to death in positive deaths.'
