초록

이 논문은 선행연구의 결과를 바탕으로, 기간에 간과된 부분이나 보다 진전된 연구를 요구하는 부분에 대한 탐색의 일환으로 작성되었다.
먼저 논문에서는 서구학계와 일본을 중심으로 이루어진 선행연구의 내용과 의의에 대해 개괄하면서 두 가지 상이한 해석학적 접근이 수렴하는 과정을 검토하였다. 불교의 전통이 살아있는 한국과 일본 등에서의 문제의식은 서구학계의 관심과 차이가 날 수 밖에 없으며, 그로 인해 연구방법과 내용에 차이를 노정하였다. 그러나 서로 상이한 접근은 불설(佛說)에 대한 보다 다면적이고 심층적인 이해를 가능하게 하는 해석지평에서 합류하게 된다.
불설의 판정기준으로 라모트(Lamotte)와 후학들의 ‘4대교법’에 대한 연구가 있다. 비교적 초기의 ‘4대교법’과 함께, 대승적인 관점이 두드러진 ‘4의(依)’에 대해서도 충분한 일차적 연구가 이루어져 있다. 이 논문에서는 ‘4대교법’의 정형구와 수사적 기법의 변주를 통해 불설에 대한 해석이 어떻게 변화되어 갔는지에 초점을 맞추었다. 이후 ‘4의’의 관점을 예고하는 ‘4대교법’의 결론은 ‘이치(理致, yukti)에 따른 해석’으로 귀결된다. 이는 대승일반을 비롯하여 원효의 해석학적 관점과도 일치한다.
논문은 이 ‘이치에 다른 해석’이 함축하는 해석학적 함의를 ‘지평융합’이라는 개념을 통해 확장하고자 한다. 가다머의 표현을 빌어, 영향사 속에 있으며, 전통에서의 해석적 역사를 체화하고 있는 경전은 해석자의 지평에서 지평융합을 촉발한다. 이 사건을 통해 전승은 새로운 의미를 지닐 뿐만 아니라, 새로운 경전이 창출될 수도 있다.

영어초록

The debates on buddhavacana in the Korean Buddhist schools have been a very exceptional case in that the open debates on the press attracted public attention to the scholastic subject crucial to the Buddhist studies, consequently increasing the public understanding of the subject as well as betraying the scholastic accomplishment of the Korean Buddhist studies. The paper stands on the shoulder of the participants of the debates and examines, if any, details unnoticed or subjects required for further advancement afterwards.
First of all, this paper reviews the contents and meaning of the studies in Japan and the West in the 20th century, comparing the two distinct approaches. The East Asian perspective should have been different from the West since Buddhism is a live tradition in the East whereas it has been a subject of intellectual concern or a subject investigated by the eyes of Judeo-Christian tradition. The differences on the interests and methods of the two traditions, in fact, mutually supported each other to converge into a new hermeneutical horizon to make deeper and more diverse understanding of the buddhavacana.
The most typical and outstanding research on this topic is the work of Lamotte on the 4 mahāpadeśa, the critical standards for buddhavacana. With accompanying publications on mahāpadeśa and the 4 pratiśaraṇa, I presume, fundamental researches have been carried out well enough. So, in this paper, I rather focus on the variations made by the application of rhetorical devices to the formula of the 4 mahāpadeśa. From the observation, I reveal how the discussion on the buddhavacana had reached the final standard, the hermeneutics by reason, yukti, which continued in the blood of Wonhyo as well as other Mahāyāna Buddhist canonical interpretors.
This paper eventually explores a possibility to extend the hermeneutics by reason to the concept of ‘the fusion of horizon.’ According to Gadamer, every canonical literature is formed and lived through ‘the effectual history’ and the canon in turn comes to be fusing into the horizon of the readers of the canonical literatures or the creators of the new scriptures. Through the events of ‘the fusion of horizon,’ the buddhavacana can not just be newly interpreted but also be created in the voice of contemporary audience.
