世宗의 ‘新樂’은 韓國의 雅樂인가? (Is it true king Se-Jong's Sin-ak is Korean Aak?)

초록

논자는 지금까지 통설(지배학설)과 달리 세종이 창제한 신악이 한국의 아악이라는 대담한 신설을 제기하여 이를 두 단계로 나누어 입증해 보았다. 먼저 세종이 집권 후반기에 창제한 신악의 정체를 두 가지 측면에서 살펴보았는데, 이 과정에서 신악이 음악문화의 자주성과 주체성에 기반한 한국의 아악임을 확인하였다. 다음은 신악이 어째서 한국의 아악이며 그런 규정은 정당한지를 통설과 신설의 아악 개념의 정의 및 그 근거를 통해 논증했다.
이를 좀 더 구체적으로 정리하면 처음 단계에서 (1) 신악 창제의 궁극 동기는 중국계 아악인 ‘신제아악’과 달리 쉽게 알아듣고 공감할 수 있는 한글 가사와 향악선율 그리고 향악기로 구성된 향악을 중심으로 국가의례를 거행하려는 ‘음악문화의 자주성과 주체성’임을 확인하였다. (2) 세종 29년 6월 무렵부터 잠시나마 신악은 아악과 본질적으로 동일한 용도로 사용되었는데, 이는 아악의 정의에 따르면 ‘신악의 아악화’ 즉 ‘한국아악의 등장’을 의미한다고 보았다.
다음 단계에서는 신악을 정말 한국의 아악이라 규정할 수 있는지를 살펴본 것으로, (1) 통설은 아악이 원래 중국의 의식음악이라고 규정하는데, 그런 규정의 근거가 『고려사』와 『조선왕조실록』에 전반적으로 존재함을 확인하였다. 하지만 이들 사료는 조선조 성리학자들의 史觀이 충실히 반영된 만큼, 통설의 정의는 중국을 천자국으로 조선을 제후국 혹은 소중화로 받아들인 조선조 성리학자들의 뿌리 깊은 사대주의적 아악관을 (의식적으로든 무의식적으로든) 무비판적으로 수용한 것이라고 보았다. (2) 한편 세조시대에 세종이 창제한 신악이 각종 국가의례에 두루 사용됨으로 해서, 한국의 아악이 공식적으로 등장했음을 확인했다. 이처럼 조선조 전 역사에서 보면 지극히 짧은 기간이지만, ‘공식적인 한국아악’이 등장함으로 해서 그 후 한국아악의 확립과 존속이 현재까지도 지속․가능하게 되었기 때문에, 논자는 세조의 자주성과 주체성을 높이 평가하였다. (3) 논자가 주장하는 신설은 그 근거를 “궁중에서의 제사활동이나 조회의례 등에서 사용하는 악에 대한 일반적인 지칭”이 아악이라는 정의와 ‘모든 역사는 현대사’라는 명제의 수용에 두었다. 따라서 신설은 현대의 아악관이자 주체적 아악관의 표출이라 할 수 있으며, 이런 점에서 우리가 조선조 성리학자의 사대주의적 아악관을 이 시대에도 무비판적으로 묵수·고집하는 건, 맹목적 문화사대주의자가 아니라면 시대착오일 뿐이라고 비판했다.

영어초록

A writer proposes a new daring theory of which King Se-Jong made Korean Aak that is different from what we generally think and accept until now and demonstrates the theory with two steps in this thesis.
The contents of the first step is that the writer checks Sin-ak, which was created in King Se-Jong’s later years, on its all aspects, then proves Sin-ak is a Korean Aak, based on independence and subjective of a Korea music culture.
In the next step, through Aak’s concepts and definitions of a general opinion and the new theory, which are distinguished because of difference in the way of thinking of Aak, they found out why we can now say Sin-ak is the Korean Aak.

The writer discusses the first step in details as below.

1. Although it is said Sin-ak was made to support insufficient of expressing for ‘difficulty of establishment Cho-sun and celebrating Kings who deserved successful contribution to the country’ with existing music, those contents were able to be represented by several established Aak and Chinese letter without any problems. Hence the reasons above are not proper purpose of Sin-ak. Therefore the creation of Sin-ak’s original purpose was not reforming of Sin-je-Aak newly, its real intention was creative our own style of music to understand well with using mainly Korean lyric, melody of Hyang-ak(Korean music) and musical instrument of Hyang-ak to perform national ceremonies. We now say, Sin-ak definitely shows independence and subjective of own our music culture.
Above facts are also proved by comparing forms of music between Sinje-Aak and Sin-ak and founded in historical document as well.
2. In Se-Jong’s 29 years(June), Sin-ak used for the same purpose of Aak for some time, it means ‘Sin-ak becomes Aak’ or ‘First stage of Korean Aak’.

Next stage, the writer demonstrates whether we can certainly say that Sin-ak is Korean Aak.

1. The general theory defines Aak is a musical ceremony of anceint China. The facts are founded in historical documents like 『Ko-ryu-sa』 and 『Cho-sun-whang-jo-sil-rok』. However those documents were basically reflected in historical views of Sung-ri-hak-ja who were Cho-sun’s representative scholars and they thought China was greater than Cho-sun. Therefore, the general theory is acceptance of China’s culture and music without critical thinking as Sung-ri-hak-ja admired and received those.
2. The writer found out that Korean Aak officially appeared as ‘Aak became Hyang-ak’ or ‘Hyang-ak became Aak’ since 'Jung-dae-up' and 'Bo-tae-pyung' which were Sin-ak and King Se-Jong created were used in Se-Jo’s period for a little while.
Even if it had been only short period of appearance of Korean Aak officially, after that time Korean-Aak(<종묘제례악>) has been established and maintained. So the writer highly valued Se-Jo’s contribution of it.
3. The new theory that the writer demonstrates is based on Aak’s definitions, ‘General meaning of Aak that was used for religious and national ceremonies’ and acceptance a thesis, ‘Every history is contemporary history.’ So, the new theory expresses present and independent view of Aak. At this point, if we keep the past view of Aak which is view of Sung-ri-hak-ja, it is anachronism. Furthermore, it is essential to re-analysis and re-format if we know we need to define right history of Korean music or Aak subjectively and future-oriented.

Therefore, the writer is confident that the new theory will be a foundation for new point of view for Korean Aak and helps understand it independently.
