白湖 尹鑴의 중용해석과 그 의미 (Baekho Yun Hyu's Interpretations of 『Jungyong』 and Their Meanings)

초록

이 글은 尹鑴의 『중용』해석에 대해 구조분석과 요지파악의 측면에서 십삼경주소본의 구설 및 주자의 『중용장구』와 상호 비교하여 同異點를 분석한 뒤, 그 영향관계와 의미를 논구한 것이다.
구조분석의 측면에서 살펴보면, 윤휴는 『중용장구』의 33장 체제 및 4대지로 나누어 보는 설을 따르지 않고, 고본 「중용」을 저본으로 10장 28절로 分章·分節하였다. 이러한 구조분석은 고본과 비교해 본 결과 독자적으로 合節하거나 分節한 것이 다수 드러난다. 또 『중용장구』 분장과 비교해 본 결과, 주자가 나누어 놓은 章을 分章한 경우는 2곳에 불과하고, 나머지는 모두 合章한 것이다. 주자의 분장은 고본의 분절과 다른 점이 많은데, 윤휴는 고본보다는 주자의 분장체계를 수용하면서 分章 또는 合章한 것을 알 수 있다. 여기에서 윤휴의 해석은 주자의 해석과 교집합에 해당하는 부분이 상당수 있음을 발견할 수 있다.
요지파악의 측면에서 살펴보면, 윤휴는 주자가 제1대지로 본 것을 2장으로 나누어 대지를 제1장은 天命, 제2장은 中庸으로 파악하고 다시 세분하였다. 다음 주자가 제2대지로 본 것을 3장으로 나누어 대지를 費隱(제3장)·行遠(제4장)·文王(제5장)으로 파악하고, 다시 이를 세분하였다. 다음 주자가 제3대지로 본 것을 4장으로 나누어 대지를 博學(제6장)·自成(제7장)·聖人(제8장)·仲尼(제9장)로 파악하고 이를 다시 세분하였다. 주자가 제4대지로 본 제33장을 윤휴는 제10장으로 보고 그 대지를 尙絅으로 파악하였다.
이러한 윤휴의 요지 파악은 주자가 中庸, 費隱, 天道·人道를 말한 것으로 대지를 파악한 것과 다르다. 곧 윤휴는 형이상학적인 중용, 비은, 천도보다는 사람의 行事에 주안점을 두고서 인도를 닦아 천도에 합하는 점을 중시하고 있다.
이처럼 윤휴의 『중용』해석은 구조분석에서 상당 부분 『중용장구』의 분장을 수용하고 있으며, 요지파악에 있어서도 주자의 설을 수용한 것이 다수 있다. 비록 分大節에 따른 대지파악은 주자의 해석과 달리 세분화하였고, 또 人道에 초점을 맞추어 事天爲己之學에 중점을 두었지만, 세부적인 해석양상을 들여다보면 天命·中和·中庸·費隱·誠·天道人道·人心道心 등 핵심명제에 대해서도 상당 부분 주자의 설을 수용하거나 근거로 하고 있다. 이런 점에서 윤휴의 『중용』해석은 주자의 설과 교집합에 해당하는 부분이 상당히 많다. 그러므로 윤휴의 『중용』해석은 주자의 해석에서 벗어난 것이 아니고 일정 부분 수용하면서 독자적 시각으로 새롭게 의리를 발명한 것이라 하겠다.

영어초록

Instead of agreeing with the viewpoint of regarding Yun Hyu's interpretations of 『Jungyong』 as post-Zhu Xi studies in previous studies, this study set out to examine his interpretations of 『Jungyong』 mainly in the aspects of analyzing the structure and figuring out the points, compare them with the old theories of Sipsamgyeongjusobon and Zhu Xi's 『Jungyong Zhangju』 in terms of similarities and differences, and investigate their influential relations and meanings.
In the aspect of structural analysis, Yun Hyu's divided the Gobon of 『Jungyong』 into ten chapters and 28 passages in the Jeobon rather than following the theory of dividing it into 33 chapters and four Daejis in 『Jungyong Zhangju』. This structural analysis was compared with the Gobon, and the analysis results show that many passages were independently combined or divided. It was also compared with the division of chapters in 『Jungyong Zhangju』, and the results show that he combined the chapters in throughout his analysis except for two places where he divided the chapters divided by Zhu Xi. The division of chapters by Zhu Xi was different from the division of passages in the Gobon in many aspects, and Yun Hyu accepted his system of dividing chapters rather than the Gobon to divide or combine chapters. Here, Yun Hyu's interpretations had considerable intersections with Zhu Xi's interpretations.
In the aspect of figuring out the points, Yun Hyu divided one Daeji defined by Zhu Xi into two chapters. He understood Chapters 1and2 of Daeji as Cheonmyeong and the mean, respectively. He divided Chapter 2 further, figuring out its points as the mean, Bulhaeng, Jigu, Cheonha, and Saekeun. He also divided the second Daeji defined by Zhu Xi into three chapters and understood it as Bieun(Chapter3), Haeongwon(Chapter4), and Munwang(Chapter5). After further division, he figured out Chapter3 as Bieun, Wonin, and Sowui, Chapter4 as Haengwon, Guisin, and Daehyo, and Chapter5 as Munwang, Muwang, and Aegong. He then divided the third Daeji defined by Zhu Xi into four chapters and figured out them as Bakhak(Chapter6), Jaseong(Chapter7), Seongin(Chapter8), and Jungni(Chapter9). Chapter6 was further divided into Bakhak, Jaseong, and Jeonji; Chapter7 into Jaseong, Cheonin, and Cheonji; Chapter8 into Seongin, Jayong, and Samjung; and Chapter9 into Jungni, Jiseong, and Jiseong. Yun Hyu regarded Chapter33 under the fourth Daeji defined by Zhu Xi and Chapter10 and understood the Daeji as Sanggyeong.
These ways that Yun Hyu figured out the points were different from the ways that Zhu Xi understood Daeji based on the mean, Bieun, Cheondo and Indo. Yun Hyu focused on the events of people rather than metaphysical mean, Bieun, and Cheondo and placed importance on cultivating Indo and combining it with Cheondo.
These findings demonstrate that Yun Hyu's interpretations of 『Jungyong』 accepted considerable parts of chapter division in 『Jungyong Zhangju』 in terms of structural analysis and embraced Zhu Xi's theories in many parts to figure out the points. He further divided chapters and passages according to Bundaejeol to figure out Daeji unlike Zhu Xi's interpretations and focused on Indo and thus Sacheonwuigijihak, but a look into his interpretation patterns in details shows that he accepted Zhu Xi's theories or found his grounds in them for many of the core propositions including Cheonmyeong, Junghwa, mean, Bieun, Seong, Cheondo&Indo, and Inshim&Dosim. It is thus apparent that Yun Hyu's interpretations of 『Jungyong』 had considerable intersections with Zhu Xi's theories and accordingly did not deviate from Zhu Xi's interpretations.
