웰다잉과 생명의료윤리를 반영한 임종, 장례 절차 및 예식 연구 (A Study on Christian Funeral Rites Focusing on the Biomedical Ethics and Well Dying)

초록

오늘날에는 좋은 죽음을 의미하는 웰다잉이란 용어가 일상의 삶 속에서 상용화되고 있으며 문자적인 의미보다는 더 넓은 차원에서 함축적으로 구사되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 죽음을 주제로 생명윤리와 웰다잉을 반영하여 환자의 임종 준비와 연명치료 중단 예식에 대해 고찰했다. 현 시대는 과거 전통적인 사회에서는 깊이 고려하지 않았던 웰 다잉 의식이 확산되고 있으며 특히 연명치료 중단이 법제화된 정황을 장례예식에 반영할 필요가 있다. 이 논문이 갖는 의의는 다음과 같다.
첫째, 이 논문에서는 임종 직전부터 장례에 이르기까지 기독교의 관점에서 실천윤리를 정립함으로써 어떻게 경건을 실천하고 공유할 것인가에 대한 지침을 제시한다. 오늘날 한국교회는 장례문화가 통일되어 있지 않고 다양성이 혼재되어 있으며 일치된 예법도 마련되어 있지 않다. 이 논문은 이러한 난제를 성찰하게 해주는 실용적 논거가 될 수 있다.
둘째, 장례예법과 관련하여 초기 한국기독교의 예전과 최근의 예전을 고찰함으로써 지나치게 현대화되고 첨단화된 장례예식을 재고하게 하는 지침을 담았다. 오늘날 장례예법은 단순화와 신속성을 추구하여 과거 기독교의 예법들이 퇴색된 지 이미 오래이다. 본 연구는 과거 예전적 요소들을 반영하여 기독교의 정체성과 신앙심을 고취할 수 있다.
셋째, 급속도로 변화된 사회 환경 속에서 필요한 연명치료 중단 예식, 사회적 참사 앞에서의 추모예식 등 실천윤리와 관련하여 더욱 세분화된 윤리적 담론을 고양하려는 데 취지를 두었다. 이 논문을 외연하여 후속 연구 주제들로서 ‘애도, 엄숙함, 배려, 상호부조 등의 덕목 실천,’ ‘화장과 매장의 문화를 숙고한 장례예식의 간소화’ 등의 연구를 모색할 수 있다.
또한 장기이식과 관련하여 제정된 뇌사 판단(전뇌사)의 기준을 확장하는 논의에 신중을 기해야 한다. 이 사안은 지엽적인 문제로 다루기보다는 적극적으로 웰 다잉 관점으로 외연하여 바라보아야 할 필요가 있다. 안락사 논의는 오랜 기간 논의가 이루어지고 있으며 어느 사회에서든 다양한 논쟁적 요소를 담고 있는 난제이다. 왜냐하면 용어나 개념의 정의에서부터 적극적, 소극적, 자발적, 비자발적 등 매우 다양한 사례들이 있기 때문이다.
한국교회는 죽음과 관련하여 성경적, 그리고 신학적 원리를 깊이 있게 반영하여 논의해야 할 큰 과제를 안고 있다. 본 연구에서는 “웰다잉과 생명윤리를 반영한 임종 고찰과 장례예식 모색”을 주제로 선행 연구에서 드러난 한계점과 다양한 난제들을 염두에 두어 기독교 관점에서 면밀하게 분석하였다.

영어초록

Nowadays, the term well-dying, which means a good death, is being used in everyday life and is used implicitly in a broader sense than in a literal sense. This study delves into the patient's preparation for death and the ceremony for discontinuing life-sustaining treatment related to biomedical ethics and well-dying within the context of death. The well-dying ritual, previously overlooked in traditional society, is gaining traction in the contemporary era. Especially, particular interest is the incorporation of the legislated discontinuation of life-sustaining treatment into funeral ceremonies. Based on this connotation, this research has its significance as follows.
First, this paper provides practical guidelines on practicing and sharing piety from a Christian perspective, from just before death to funerals. In the current landscape of Korean churches, funeral culture is diverse and lacks a unified form for funeral rites. This paper offers practical solutions to these complex issues, serving as a valuable resource for Christian funeral practitioners.
Furthermore, this study holds the potential to reinvigorate Christian identity and faith by revisiting the early and recent Korean Christian rites and reevaluating the overly modernized and high-tech funeral rites of today. The current funerals prioritize simplicity and speed, often at the expense of traditional Christian rites. This study plays a significant role in reviving these past liturgical elements, strengthening Christian identity and faith.
Third, in a rapidly changing social environment, this study promotes more detailed ethical discourse related to practical ethics, such as ceremonies for discontinuing life-sustaining treatment and memorial ceremonies in the face of social disasters. Thus, this research suggests follow-up research topics such as ‘practicing virtues such as mourning, solemnity, consideration, and mutual aid’ and ‘simplification of funeral ceremonies considering the culture of cremation and burial.’ Lastly, this study proposes the follow-up research themes based on the criticism of the complexity and multiplicity of funeral procedures in Korean Christianity, the remnants and evils of traditional Confucian rituals, the commercial prosperity of the funeral industry, and its negative impact on society.
The Korean church has a big task to discuss in relation to death by deeply reflecting biblical and theological principles. In this study, we closely analyzed it from a Christian perspective, keeping in mind the limitations and various difficulties revealed in previous studies under the theme of “Thoughts on death and seeking funeral rites that reflect well dying and bioethics.”
