초록

지난 40여 년간 한국 기독교의 교역자와 평신도들에게 잔잔하면서도 큰 감동을 미친 인물 가운데 한 사람이 목회신학자 헨리 나우웬이다. 그는 현대인의 실존을 고난으로 보았고, 일평생 그 고난의 문제를가지고 하나님과 사람들 사이를 가교하는 영성을 추구하였다. 특히 그는 마지막10년을 장애인공동체에서 장애인들과 더불어 교제하며 영성과 신학 작업을 하였다. 이글은 장애(인)신학적 시각에서 그를 장애(인)신학자로, 그의 신학을 장애(인)신학으로 조명하고자 하는 시도이다.
나우웬은 현대인의 실존을 상처투성이의 존재로 보고 있다. 인간의모든 상처는 근본적으로 영적인 것이며, 세상에 살면서 관계하는 수많은 존재와 사건들로부터 오는 것이다. 그에 따르면, 인간은 하나님에게의존해야 하는 영적인 존재이고, 세상 안의 사람들 사이에서 서로 관계하는 상호의존적인 존재이다. 그러므로 그 상처에 대한 치유 또한 하나님과의 영적인 관계 속에서 가능한 것이며, 세상 안의 수많은 관계 속에서 치유와 회복과 발전으로 나아가야 하는 것이다.
나우웬에게 있어서 상처가 인간의 실존이라면, 장애(인)신학적 전망에서 본다면 장애야말로 인간 실존의 가장 대표적인 상처이다. 나우웬은 특히 긴 세월 장애인공동체에 살고 장애인과 함께 교제하면서 장애를 하나의 은사로 재발견하였다. 장애란 단순히 육체적이거나 정신적이거나 사회적인 손상이나 불능이나 불리가 아니라 세계와 공동체를 위한 것으로 공동체 가운데서 하나님의 위로와 격려와 역사를 일으키고경험하게 하는 성령의 은사인 것이다. 그런 의미에서 장애는 장애인에게도 은사이고, 비장애인에게도 은사이고, 공동체에게도 은사인 것이다.
나우웬의 영성신학의 초기부터 말년까지 일관되게 흐르는 신학적주제는‘상처 받은 치유자’이다. 이 세상에 존재하는 모든 인간은 수많은 고난 가운데 상처를 받는다. 예수 그리스도는 온갖 고난을 받으셨지만 오히려 그는 그 고난으로 우리의 고난을 위로하였고, 죄와 수치의상징인 십자가를 지셨지만 오히려 그는 그 십자가로 우리의 죄와 허물을 해결하였다. 오늘날 진정한 사역자란 상처가 없는 사람이나 상처를없애는 사람이 아니라 오히려 상처를 통하여 영성에의 길로 나아가고그 상처를 가지고 주님 안에서 상처받은 다른 사람을 위로하며 치유하는 사역자이다. 그런 점에서 장애 기독교인야말로 하나님의 사역에 있어서 진정으로 상처 입은 치유자의 대표라고 말할 수 있다.
나우웬은 심리학자이면서 영성신학자이다. 그러나 그의 삶이 대학교의 강단보다 주로 장애인 공동체에 있었고, 학문적인 이론보다 주로 장애인과의 교제에 있었음에 그를 장애(인)신학자로 불러도 무방할 것이다. 고난과 상처와 장애와 더불어 살고 수행한 그의 영성과 신학을 고려할 때, 오히려 그를 장애(인)신학자라고 부르는 것이 정당하고, 그의영성과 신학 또한 오늘 우리의 장애(인)신학의 구성을 위하여 더 깊이연구해야 하며, 오늘의 장애(인)사역의 현장에 있어서 매우 유용한 실제적인 본으로서 적극적으로 소개하고 적용해야 할 것이다.

영어초록

Henri J. M. Nouwen was a theologian of ministry who gave calm but great inspiration to the pastors and lay people of the Korean church for the last 40 years. He saw suffering as the reality of modern people. So the spirituality he pursued in his whole life was that of a bridge between God and man with the problem of suffering.
Especially, for the last 10 years of his life, he continued his work on spirituality and theology while in fellowship with the mentally challenged in a community of people with disability. This paper, from the perspective of the theology of disability, attempts to view him as a theologian of disability and his theology as the theology of disability.
Nouwen viewed modern people as being covered with wounds. All human woundedness are basically spiritual and come from numerous relationships and events of our lives in this world. According to him,human beings are spiritual beings who need to rely on God, and they exist in interdependent relationship with others in the world. Therefore,the healing of the wound is possible in the spiritual relationship with God, and it should lead to healing, recovery and progress in many relationships in the world.
If woundedness is human reality as Nouwen asserts, disability is the most representative case of woundedness in human reality from the perspective of disability theology. Especially, living and having fellowship in a community for the people with disability for an extended period of time, Nouwen rediscovered disability as a gift.
Disability is not simply physical, mental or social damage, inability or disadvantage. Rather, it is for the benefit of the world and communities, and it is the Holy Spirit’s gift which ushers in God’s comfort and work and help us experience them in our community. In that regard, disability is a gift to the people with disability, to those without a disability and also to the community.
From the early years to the last, the theological theme that is persistent in Nouwen’s spirituality is “wounded healer.” Every human being in this world gets “wounded” in numerous sufferings.
Jesus Christ received all kinds of hardships, but through his hardships,he comforts us in our own sufferings. He bore the cross, a symbol of sin and shame, but through it, he took our sin and infirmities away. The true minister is not someone without a wound or who takes away the wounds, but someone who gets to deeper spirituality through the woundedness and is able to comfort and heal other wounded people in Christ. In that regard, a christian with disability is an excellent representative of a wounded healer in God’s ministry.
Nouwen was a psychologist and a theologian of spirituality.
Nonetheless, there is no problem with calling him a theologian of disability because he spent more time in the community of the people with disability rather than on the college podiums and also endeavored more in having fellowship with the disabled than in scholarly theories. It is rather proper to call him a theologian of disability when we consider his spirituality and theology which matured as he embraced suffering, woundedness and disability. We also need to study his spirituality and theology for the formation of our theology of disability, and they should be introduced and applied as a very useful model for disability ministry.
