官妓 楚月의 上疏에 나타난 19세기의 사회상 (19th Century's Social Facets shown in Gwan-Gi Cho-Wol's Appeal)

초록

Because the Confucian image of women was forced to women due to the late Chosun’s patriarchy, women were recognized as the existence that did its role only in the area of family. Hence, women of late Chosun could not appeal to political and social affairs. However, it is worth noticing that one woman entered the appeal which contained the overall social problems not the personal problem. In Pyeong-An-Buk-Do-Ji issued in 1973, the notice of appeal written by Gwan-Gi (official Gisaeng) Cho-Wol in the 19th century was partially translated and introduced. The notice of appeal made by Gwan-Gi Cho-Wol included many social problems that Chosun society of the 19th century was faced with. Social problems that Cho-Wol recognized at that time, ranged from the problem of taxation policies such as exchanging grain, land tax and military service, to the evil of regional administration focused on a local governor, lawsuit, and the evil of past policies. Cho-Wol strongly criticized Chosun’s society focused on difficulties of general people with many problems occurred from the execution of various social policies.
However, the full text of Cho-Wol’s notice of appeal could not be confirmed. Whether this notice of appeal was actually reported to the king can hardly be confirmed due to the limit of data. Also, another person might make the notice of appeal in the name of Cho-Wol. Nobody can completely rule out such the possibility. Nevertheless, because with the woman’s name, the appeal strongly criticized those days’ society, and the 19th century’s society could be understood through it, Gwan-Gi Cho-Wol’s notice of appeal deems to be meaningful.
