전통축제와 축제적 연행의 구성과 진행 방식에 관한 시론－해월(解越)과 포월(匍越)의 미학적 가능성 탐색－ (A preliminary study about the way of construction and progress on the Traditional festivals and Festive performance－An exploration of aesthetics possibility about the ‘Haewol’ and ‘Powol’－)

초록

축제와 축제적 연행의 구성과 진행방식에 대한 이해는 우리 축제와 그 연행의 미학을 탐색하는 데 긴요한 것임에도 불구하고, 축제적 연행의 하나인 탈놀이를 제외하고는 본격적인 논의가 이루어지지 않았다. 이에 이 연구에서는 전통축제의 구성과 진행의 방식을 살펴본 다음, 축제를 이루는 다양한 요소들, 즉 민속예술, 대동놀이, 굿 등의 구성과 진행방식을 살펴보고, 이를 바탕으로 전통 축제와 축제적 연행의 미학에 대한 새로운 접근의 가능성을 탐색해보았다.
연구결과, 우리의 축제와 축제적 연행들의 구성방식은 ‘풀고 넘기’ 즉 ‘해월’의 개념으로 설명할 수 있다. 먼저 마을축제와 고을축제는 큰 틀에서 볼 때, 문화적으로 허용된 축제의 시공간 안에서 벌여졌지만, 그 틀 안에서 시공간의 운영은 행위주체들의 의지와 상황에 따라 조정이 가능한 것이었다. 또한 축제를 구성하는 연행들은 상호 의존적 관계에 있지 않고 독립성을 지녔기 때문에 그 순서와 내용 역시 주체의 의지와 상황에 따라 가변적이었다. 다음으로, 탈놀이와 지신밟기, 그리고 굿의 사례를 통해 축제적 연행에서 공통적으로 드러나는 구성 방식도 파악할 수 있었다. 축제적 연행에서 공히 확인할 수 있는 것은 매 연행의 구성요소들이 연속적으로 펼쳐지는 게 아니라 반드시 풀이의 과정을 거친 후에 다음의 구성요소로 이행된다는 것이다. 이처럼 축제와 그 속에서 태어나고 자란 축제적 연행의 구성방식이 유사한 것은 프랙탈현상으로 설명할 수 있다. 축제라는 큰 틀이 해월적 구성방식을 취하고 있기 때문에 그 속에 포함된 축제적 연행 역시 그와 같은 방식을 취하는 자체유사성을 보여주는 것이다.
다음으로 축제와 그 속에 포함된 연행들의 진행방식은 ‘기어 넘기’ 즉 ‘포월(匍越)’의 개념으로 설명할 수 있다. 시간적으로 볼 때 축제의 흐름은 단선적으로 이어지는 게 아니라 가다가 쉬고 쉬다가 가기를 반복하는 가운데 앞으로 나아가며, 공간적으로 볼 때 축제의 전개는 길놀이를 바탕으로 하는 모든 연행들의 사례에서 나타나듯이 전후좌우로 움직이면서, 가다가 멈추고 멈추었다 가기를 반복한다. 이런 양상은 축제적 연행에서도 마찬가지이다. 예를 들어 각 집의 지신밟기는 인과적 관계에 따라 순차적으로 진행되는 게 아니라 매 연행이 독립성을 지니면서 연행되었다. 이 때문에 집집마다 지신을 밟는 시간이나 그 뒤에 주객이 함께 음주가무를 즐기는 시간이 다를 수밖에 없었다. 또한 길에서 길로 이어지는 지신밟기의 진행은 전후좌우로 움직이되, 머물렀다 나아가고 나아가다 멈추어 마치 유격대의 출몰처럼 그 진행을 예상하기 어려운 형태를 보여준다.
이 해월적이면서도 포월적인 구성과 진행의 방식은 인과관계를 바탕으로 일직선적인 전개를 보여주는 서구의 축제 또는 공연예술, 특히 아리스토텔레스적인 무대극과는 분명히 다른 것이고, 똑같이 삽화적인 구성을 취하되 제한된 시간과 삽화의 연속적 전개를 전제로 한 브레히트의 서사극과도 다른 것이다. 부연하자면 해월은 연속성을 전제로 한 어떤 형태의 연행미학과도 다른 것이고, 포월 역시 단선적 진행을 전제로 한 어떤 형태의 연행미학과도 구별되는 우리 축제의 미학적 특질인 것이다.

영어초록

It is important that understand construction and progress on the traditional festivals and festive performance. because, it is essencial to explore aesthetics of the festival and festive performance. however, except mask play, serious discussions were not made. so in this study, I try to search the construction and progress of traditional festival. and try to search the construction and progress of festive performance ; Folk art, Daedongnoli, Gut. base on this, I try to search the possibility of a new approach about the aesthetics on the traditional festival and festive performance.
As a result of study, our village festivals and town festivals, when you view in a large scale, had been occured in time and space of the festival that was culturally accepted. however, within the framework, operation of the time and space of performance could be rearrange by the will of the subject and situations. also, festive performances are independent of each other and do not depend, therefore, the procedure and contents was also variable by the will of the subject and situation.
We were able to determine the construct and progress that was revealed as common in the festive performances. first is the way of construction. being able to see in a festive performance is that component of the performance was not unfold in a row. surely this components move on to the next component through the progress of resolving. if we define these way of construction is ‘Haewol’ that mean ‘pass after rejolve’, such a construction already has been identified in the village festivals and town festivals.
next, the progress of festivals and testive performance could be explain as the concept of ‘Powol’ that mean ‘crawl pass’. on the perspective of time, the flow of festival are not continue unilinearally, but go forward while repeating the rest and move forward. also, on the perspective of space, unfolding of festival repeat the forward and pause while move to all direction ; we could see this in any case of performance based on Gilnoli. these way of construction and progress is different from the performing arts and festivals in the West, especially Aristotle’s plays for the stage, which was shown unilinear progress based on causality. it is also different from Brecht’s epic theatre which is under the premise of limited time and continuous development of illustration.
Put an elaborate comment, Haewol is different from any other aesthetics of the performance that is under the premise of continue. also, Powol is different from any other aesthetics of the performance that is under the premise of unilinear progress, too. In conclusion, haewol and Powol is the korean festival’s aesthetic characteristic.
