초록

이 연구는 1978년 6월 30일 한중연의 개원 이래 장서각이 수행해 온 고문서 사업의 전개와 성과를 정리한 것이다. 40년 이상의 역사를 지닌 장서각의 고문서 사업은 한국의 고문서를 대표하는 많은 성과를 제출했다. 그동안 장서각이 수집한 고문서는 44만 점을 넘어서는 엄청난 양이다. 그중 107개 소장처의 6만 2천여 점은 장서각에 기증·기탁되어 있으며, 10만 5천여 점은 정리 중에 있다. 나머지 27만여 점은 실물은 비록 장서각에서 떠났으나, 마이크로필름이나 디지털 이미지의 형태로 그 이미지 정보를 장서각이 축적하고 있다.
자료집을 중심으로 그간 간행한 도서도 300여 책에 달한다. 장서각의 고문서 사업을 대표하는 『고문서집성』이 126권까지 출판되었고, 『이재난고』를 비롯한 일기 등 주요 자료를 대상으로 간행한 『한국학자료총서』도 51책이 간행되었다. 학술적 가치는 물론 예술적 가치도 높은 명현들의 간찰자료를 발굴하여 소개한 『한국간찰자료선집』이 22책, 전시회 도록과 『명가의 고문서』를 합쳐 25책의 도록 자료가 공간되었다. 최근에는 스토리텔링을 포함하는 연구서와 역주서, 영문번역서 등 장서각 고문서 사업을 통하여 간행하는 도서의 깊이와 폭이 더욱 심화, 확장되어 가고 있다.
무엇보다 장서각 고문서 사업은 그 성과 못지않게 불모지나 다름없었던 한국의 고문서 환경에 선구적 역할을 수행하면서 한국의 고문서 사업과 고문서학의 토대를 놓고 확장, 발전시켜 나갔다는 점에서 중요한 의미를 가진다. 장서각 고문서 사업은 민간에 산재한 고문서의 조사·수집의 방법론은 물론 기증·기탁과 기초연구, DB구축 및 활용에 걸치는 고문서 사업의 모든 부분에 있어 선도적 역할을 하면서 전범을 세워 왔다. 또한 협의의 고문서 정의에 따르는 고문서 사업이 아닌 광의의 관점에서 고문서의 정의를 세우고 고문서 사업을 추진함으로써 혹여나 흩어질 수도 있었던 고문서의 아카이브학적 가치를 유지할 수 있었다. 보다 직접적으로는 우수한 전문 인력을 양성하여 보급함으로써 한국의 고문서학과 고문서 사업의 확장과 발전에 크게 이바지하였다. 직접 장서각 고문서 사업을 통하여 배출된 연구자와 전문 인력만 해도 90여 명에 달한다. 이들은 이론과 실무 경험을 겸비한 인재들로 사실상 한국의 고문서학계와 고문서 사업을 이끌고 있다고 할 수 있다.
눈부신 성과를 쌓아 올린 40년 역사이지만, 변화하는 환경과 그 속에서 요구되는 역할 속에서 장서각 고문서 사업의 방향과 가치를 어떻게 설정해 나가야 할지에 대한 근본적인 고민이 요구된다. 현재 한국사회의 다양한 학문 분야 및 대중적 수요에 대한 대응으로서, 문화콘텐츠 원천자료 제공을 위한 가공과 서비스를 위하여 장서각 고문서 사업이 제안하고 있는 것이 현대화와 대중화, 세계화의 방향으로, 역주와 스토리텔링, 영문번역과 한문 워크샵 등 세계화 및 웹서비스의 강화이다.

영어초록

This is a study on the development and results of the research project of old documents by Jangseogak since the Academy of Korean studies opened in 1978. Jangsoegak represents Korean research projects of old documents and has achieved many research achievements over the past 40 years. The documents collected by Jangseogak amounted to a total of 440,000 pieces, of which 62,000 are donated and deposited to Jangseogak, 105,000 pieces are being organized and the rest 270,000 are stored in a microfilm or in a digital image.
Jangseogak has published 300 books including data collection. 『Old document integration(古文書集成)』 is a representative compilation of the research project of old documents by Jangseogak and up to 126 books have been published. 『Collection of Historical Materials on Korean Studies(韓國學資料叢書)』 is a series that published diary materials including 『Ijaenango(頤齋亂藁)』 and up to 51 books have been published. 『Selected Collections of Korean Old Letters(韓國簡札資料選集)』 is a series that published letters by noted wise men and published up to 22 books. 25 art brochures including 『명가의 고문서』 are published as books. Recently studies that include storytelling, copies of translation with notes and English version books are published , and publications through this research projects are expanding in depth.
It is significant in that the research project of old documents by Jangseogak plays a pioneering role in research of old documents of Korea and laid the foundation for Korean old documents research and developed it. This research project laid down standard for Korean old documents research by providing research methodology in old documents, basic research on donating and deposit of documents and research on building and utilizing databases. It defines a concept of the old documents from a broad perspective not a consultation perspective and perform research projects with this point of view , and which makes it possible to maintain archive value of the old documents. It has greatly contributed to the expansion and development of the ancient document research in Korea by training and dissemination of excellent professionals. The number of talented professionals produced through this project is up to 90 and those who combine theory and practice play a key role in the sector of Korean old documents research.
After 40 years of remarkable achievements, the research project of old documents by Jangseogak is now required to think about how to set the direction in the changing environment and the role required. As a response to the diversification and popularization of the academic field of Korean society, it proposes to give storytelling work, copies of translation with notes, English translation and Chinese workshop to provide original data for cultural contents and to strengthen web services in terms of modernization, popularization, and globalization of document materials.
