초록

본 글은 한국국학진흥원 개발 AI 활용 고문헌 자동번역 프로그램에 대한 설계와 전망을 담았다. 최근 챗GPT의 공개 이후 AI 기술은 우리의 일상생활에 큰 변화를 가져오고 있다. AI 기술과 시대적 요구에 따라 한국국학진흥원에서는 2022년부터 OCR부터 문장분절-자동번역까지 텍스트 확보부터 번역에 이르는 일련의 프로그램 개발을 시작했다. AI를 활용한 OCR→문장분절→자동번역까지 일련의 프로그램 개발은 국내에서 최초로 개발을 시도한 것이다. 이러한 프로그램 개발은 디지털 텍스트 확보에 소요되는 인력과 시간, 비용을 절감할 수 있으며, AI를 통한 자동번역 프로그램은 놀라운 속도로 초벌번역 결과를 제공할 수 있으므로 원문을 해독할 수 있는 시간을 단축시킬 수 있을 것이다.
이처럼 AI를 활용한 고문헌 번역프로그램의 개발은 고문헌이라는 1차 콘텐츠에 대해 획기적인 이용전기를 제공한다는 점에서 의미가 있다. 또한 고문헌 관련 연구기관에서 고문헌의 빠른 디지털 텍스트 변환이 가능하여 연구자를 비롯한 대중들의 이용에 편의성을 제공해 줄 수 있다. 한편 AI를 활용한 고문헌 번역프로그램은 한자로 기술된 고문헌 특성에 맞추어 AI 및 ICT 기술을 접목해야 한다. 한국국학진흥원에서는 새롭게 발표되는 AI 기반 모델과 모델의 성능을 높일 수 있는 다양한 튜닝 기법들을 적용한 알고리즘과 아키텍쳐 등 신기술의 탐색과 적용에 적극적으로 반영하여 AI를 활용한 고문헌 전용 자동번역 프로그램 개발을 진행할 예정이다.

This article contains the design and prospects of an automatic translation program for ancient texts using AI developed by The Korean Studies Institute. After the recent release of ChatGPT, AI technology is bringing great changes to our daily lives. In accordance with AI technology and the needs of the times, the Korea Institute for the Advancement of Korean Studies began developing a series of programs from 2022, from OCR to sentence segmentation to automatic translation, from text acquisition to translation. The development of a series of programs from OCR using AI → sentence segmentation → automatic translation is the first attempt to develop in Korea. The development of such a program can reduce manpower, time, and cost required to secure digital text, and an automatic translation program through AI can provide rough translation results at an astounding speed, reducing the time to decipher the original text. There will be.
As such, the development of an ancient literature translation program using AI is meaningful in that it provides a groundbreaking biography of the primary content of ancient literature. In addition, it is possible to quickly convert old documents to digital text at research institutes related to old documents, providing convenience for use by researchers and the public. On the other hand, AI-based translation programs for old documents should incorporate AI and ICT technologies according to the characteristics of old documents written in Chinese characters. The Korean Studies Institute for the Advancement of Korean Studies will actively reflect on the exploration and application of new technologies such as newly announced AI-based models and algorithms and architectures to which various tuning techniques that can improve the performance of the models are applied. We are planning to develop an automatic translation program exclusively for ancient documents using AI.
