초록

실증주의적 서구사상은 계량적, 가시적 사고에 매몰됨으로써 인간의 초월적 사유체계와 능력을 제한하게 되는 모순을 생산하게 되었다. 이에 대하여 비판적이었던 융학파는 초월적, 합일적 세계관의 복원을 주장하며, '대극의 합일'이라는 사상적 흐름을 계승시킨다. 인간을 둘러싼 근원적 환경에 존재하는 대극을 극복하고 하나로 합치시켜야 한다는 대극합일 사상은 종교와 철학 등에 광범위한 형태로 감지되고 있으며, 특히 특정한 시각적 형태를 통해 상징적으로 표출되는데, 원이 가장 대표적인 사례이다. 원 제작에 관해, 융학파는 원형론과 집단무의식 이론을 통해 선험적이고 근원적인 동기가 존재한다고 주장하였고, 엘리아데와 아른하임은 ‘이미지와 의미의 일치’와 ‘이형동질’적 사고를 추구하였던 고대인들의 관념에서 그 근거를 찾았다. 리드는 라파엘의 견해를 들어 죽음의 한계를 극복하려는 초월적 사고에서 기인하였다고 주장하였는데, 이러한 견해는 원이라는 기하학적 오브제 속에서 인류의 보편적 관념과 인간의 원형을 유추해 볼 수 있는 근거를 마련해준다. 원은 다양한 방식으로 초월적, 합일적 세계관을 표상하고 있다. 그것은 첫째, 인간의 근원적 대극인 신을 상징하는 표상이다. 둘째, 원은 신과의 합일, 회귀를 상징하는 표상이다. 신과 이데아는 인간의 근원적 출발지이자 궁극적인 목적지라는 회귀관념이 인간의 보편적 사고에 내재되어 있다. 셋째, 원은 영원 회귀와 시간의 갱신을 상징하는 순환적 표상이다. 만다라와 같은 실천적 상징들은, 무의식으로부터 자발적으로 표상되는 개성화 과정을 거친, 생명의 궁극적인 전체성을 내포하는 시각적 형상인 것이다.
