초록

조선시대 임진전쟁과 관련 인물의 평가는 승리와 실패의 결과에 따른 善惡의 대립적인 구도로 연결된다. 그러나 역사적인 관점에서 인물서술은 시대상황, 전쟁과 기억, 당사자의 구체적인 전쟁수행을 종합적으로 분석하여 정리되어야 한다. 급변하는 현대사와 밀접하게 연관되어 시대를 이겨낼 리더십과 극복의 인물로 이순신이 부각되면 언제나 함께 그 악역으로 평가되는 원균이 있다. 원균 개인의 호불호를 논외로 하더라도 역사인물에 대한 평가는 그 인물이 살았던 시대상황을 반드시 검토되어야 한다.
전쟁은 역사에서 개인과 사회(국가)가 평범하게 경험할 수 없는 극한의 체험을 통해 결코 지워지지 않는 역사기억을 제공한다. 전쟁의 핵심 관련 인물인 군사지휘관은 전황, 정치적 배경, 지휘하는 전력의 크고 작음 등에 상관없이 전쟁에서 승리해야 한다. 또한, 전쟁은 평소에 큰 문제시되지 않았던 내부적 갈등요소가 침략국과의 전투와 함께 전면적으로 부각되어 전쟁승패에 연관되어 전쟁수행 인물의 평가에 반영된다. 그러므로 전쟁과 인물의 평가에 대한 연구는 전쟁에 대한 인식, 시대상황, 전쟁관련 요소의 변화양상, 전황, 특히 정치와 전쟁의 상관성 등이 충분히 고려되어야 한다.
조선은 건국이후 지속적으로 왜구 등 해상문제에 발생하여 수군에 대한 높은 인식과 제도적 변화를 경험했다. 그러나 위험스러운 해상에서 근무, 각종 군역의 어려움, 전선을 비롯한 무기체계의 생산과 유지를 위한 많은 노력 등으로 수군은 발전과 정체를 거듭했다. 무엇보다 지상군과 차별되는 수군의 특성을 반영한 지휘체계가 갖추어지지 않은 상황에서 맞이한 임진전쟁은 수군지휘관의 독자적인 지휘환경이 미흡했다. 이미 예견되는 전쟁에 대비하여 전력을 정비했던 이순신에 비하여 원균은 전쟁초기 자신의 전력을 상실함으로써 수군지휘관의 역량을 발휘하지 못했다. 이후 이순신과의 연합작전에 참여하여 많은 승리를 거두고 군사지휘관으로 전공을 세워 자신의 성과를 인정받고자 하였지만, 강한 전력을 가지고 주도적으로 작전을 지휘한 이순신에 밀려 저평가되었다. 물론 이것은 원균이 초전에서 자신의 전력을 상실한 점에서 기인한 것으로 변명의 여지가 없다.
전공을 둘러싼 이순신과의 경쟁은 조정에서 심각하게 논의할 정도로 전시상황에서 문제가 되었으며, 원균은 지상군 지휘관으로 자리를 옮겼다. 일본군에 대한 수륙합동작전과 수군우선작전의 갈등은 이순신의 파면으로 이어졌으며, 이어 통제사를 맡은 원균도 동일한 입장에서 작전의 효율성을 강조했다. 전면적으로 재침한 일본군에 대한 위기의식으로 당시의 전황을 오판한 국왕 선조와 도원수의 강압으로 비록 원균이 출전하였지만, 수군 최고지휘관으로 원균은 조선의 전 수군력을 괴멸상태로 몰아넣은 칠천량해전에서 패전하고 전사하였다. 이후 추락한 국왕권을 제고하려는 선조의 정치적 목적과 당시 정치세력간의 이해관계로 원균은 선무공신의 1등에 녹훈되었지만, 정확한 원균의 평가라 할 수는 없다. 이후 시대변화에 따라 외침에 대한 승리자로서 이순신이 부각될 때마다 원균은 그 대치점에서 무능하고 악인으로 평가되는 경향을 보였다.

The evaluation of the Imjin War(壬辰戰爭) and related persons in the Joseon period is linked to the opposing composition of good and evil according to the result of victory and defeat. However, from a historical point of view, the character description should be summarized in a comprehensive analysis of the situation of the times, war and memory, and specific war performance of the parties. When Yi Sun-shin(李舜臣) is highlighted as a person who is closely related to the rapidly changing modern history and overcoming the times, there is Won Gyun(元均) who is always regarded as the villain. Unless like or dislike the individual Won Gyun, the evaluation of historical figures must be reviewed for the age of the person.
War provides historical memories that are never erased by the extreme experiences that individuals and societies in the history can not normally experience. The military commander, who is the key figure in the war, must win the battle, regardless of the battlefield, the political background, and the power of command. In addition, the internal conflict factors that have not been a big problem in the war are reflected in the evaluation of the war - related characters in relation to the victory and defeat of the war. Therefore, studies on the evaluation of war and character should take into consideration the perception of war, the situation of the times, the changing aspect of war related factors, the relationship between war and politics and war.
Since the founding of Joseon, shipbuilding has been experiencing a high awareness and institutional change of naval forces as it has occurred in maritime problems such as naval vessels. However, due to the dangerous work on the sea, the difficulties of the various armies, and the efforts to produce and maintain the weapons systems including the fronts, the navy has developed and stagnated. Above all, in the situation where the command system that reflects the characteristics of the navy that is different from the ground forces is not equipped, the Imjin war that was encountered in the army commander's own command environment was insufficient. Compared to Yi Sun-sin, who had prepared for the war that was already foreseen, Won Gyun failed to demonstrate the capability of the navy commander by losing his power in the early war. Since then, he has participated in the combined operation with Yi Sun-sin and won many victories. He tried to gain his achievement by establishing a military commander, but he was undervalued by Yi Sun-sin, who led the operation with strong power. Of course, this is due to the fact that Won Gyun lost his powers in the first phase, and there is no excuse.
Competition with Yi Sun-sin about war achievement became a problem in the exhibition situation to be seriously discussed in the mediation, and Won Gyun became the head commander of the Joseon navy(水軍統制使). Conflicts between the navy priority operation(水軍于先作戰) and army-naval combat operations(水陸合同作戰) led to the dismiss of Yi Sun-sin, and Won Gyun, who was replaced Yi Sun-sin as head commander of the Joseon navy, emphasized the efficiency of the operation from the same standpoint. He was quick to take action and justify his newly acquired position. He gathered the entire Joseon fleet, which now had more than 100 ships outside of Yeosu, to search for the Japanese. Without any previous preparations or planning, Won Gyun then had his entire fleet sail towards Pusan. Won Gyun was the leader of the navy even though the King Seonjo(宣祖) and Commander-in-chief(都元帥) were under pressure by the misgivings of the Japanese army who was re-attacked. However, Won-gyun, who was the head commander of the Joseon navy, defeated the battle of Chilcheollyang(漆川梁海戰). Won Gyun was taken to the top of the Sunmoo vassal of merit(宣武功臣) because of the political purpose of the king and his political interests to increase the fall of the king. However, it can not be said that the evaluation is accurate. Whenever Yi Sun-sin emerged as the winner of the aggression according to the change of the times, Won Gyun showed a tendency to be judged as incompetent and wicked at the point of confrontation.
