顔元의 비판정신과 인문학의 반성 (Yan Yuan(顔元)‘s critical spirit and reflection on humanities)

초록

顔元은 明末淸初에 살았던 혁신적이고 실천적인 사상가로서, 시대적 변화에 무능하게 대응하는 성리학을 비판하면서 공자의 원래 가르침을 회복하자고 주장하였다. 그리고 그 대안으로서 실천과 習行의 방법을 주장하였다. 연구자는 이러한 비판과 대안이 오늘 한국의 인문학이 처해있는 상황에도 유효하다고 판단되어, 안원의 비판정신으로 한국의 인문학을 조명해 보았다. 특히, 본고에서 눈여겨 본 것은 두 가지다. 첫째, 시대적 요구에 입각한 비판정신이다. 둘째, 비판에 대한 대안과 실천이다. 이를 위해 안원의 생애와 비판정신을 알아보고, 안원이 비판한 관점을 근거로 한국의 인문학을 투영해 보았다. 안원의 비판은 동시대 학자와 달리 용감하고, 명확한 대안과 실천이 수반되었다. 그 요체는 이치를 제대로 파악하고, 이를 실천하는 실학적 방법에 있다.
이러한 안원의 비판은 4세기가 지난 오늘 여기의 인문학에도 적용된다. 시대와 대상은 달라도 안원이 비판한 성리학과 오늘의 인문학이 처해있는 상황에는 비슷한 점이 많다. 지금 인문학에 대한 비판은 안원이 용기를 내어 성리학을 비판한 것처럼 쉽지 않다. 또한 지금의 인문학에게도 인문학의 이치, 즉 인문정신의 올바른 파악과 이를 실천하는 자세가 필요하다. 이러한 측면에서 인문학이 무엇인지에 대한 올바른 정의와 인문학에 대한 주체의 파악, 과거의 학문적 방법에서의 탈피와 보다 정밀한 연구 자세 등을 지적할 수 있을 것이다. 그리고 이를 위해서는 현대 문명과 다양한 학문을 적극적으로 활용하여야 한다. 그러면서 궁극적으로 인문학이 아닌 인문정신을 회복해야 할 것이다.
오랜 역사 속에서 인문학은 선인들의 과거와 거기에서 존재했다. 그러나 안원이 당시의 무능한 학문을 비판하고 현실을 직시하라고 주문한 것처럼, 인문학도 인문정신을 제대로 살려 여기와 지금의 인문학을 실천해야할 것이다.

영어초록

Yan Yuan(顔元) lived in the late Ming and the early Qing dynasty as innovative and practical thinker while criticizing the incompetence of Neo-Confucianism and claiming to recover the teachings of Confucius. At the same time, he presented the methods of practice and practical philosophy(習行) as an alternative. In this study on the basis of judgement that criticisms and alternatives of Yan Yuan are valid even today for the situation of the humanities in Korea, Korean humanities is reflected by the viewpoints of Yan Yuan.
In particular, two points are focused on this paper. First, it is a critical spirit in line with the demands of the times. Secondly, it is an alternative to the criticism and practice of alternative. To this end the life and critical spirit of Yan Yuan is examined and the humanities in Korea is reilluminated by the viewpoint of Yan Yuan. Criticism of Yan Yuan was more cynical than those of his contemporaries, and also was accompanied by alternatives and practices. The keypoint of Yan Yuan’s criticism and alternatives was to grasp the essence of things in accordance with the principles correctly and to practice the same.
This critical spirit of Yan Yuan can be also applied to the humanities today. There are many similarities between circumstances Neo-Confucianism of Yan Yuan’s day and humanities today faces in spite of differences in the context of the era and the culture. To criticize humanities today is also as difficult as Yan Yuan criticized Neo-Confucianism. In today's humanities a proper understanding of the humanities spirit and attitude to practice it is also required. In this regard, it was pointed out that the correct definition of humanities, understanding of the subject in humanities , breakthrough with the past academic way and precise and more detailed research attitude are needed. To do so, modern civilization and the various disciplines are utilized actively. At the same time, ultimately humanities spirit rather than humanities is necessary to be recovered.
In the long history of humanities, humanities has existed in the distant space and times called as our ancestors’ culture. However, humanities today should be alive practicing the humanities of here and now by restoring humanities spirit correctly as Yan Yuan criticized the incompetent academism of that times and is required to face reality.
