초록

The main focus of this article is the pomerial extension of the city of Rome by Emperor Claudius. His extension in 49 CE has been proved by both literary and archaeological sources. Moreover, in comparison to other cases of the pomerial extension, there remain much more abundant data to be examined in order to understand the reasons and purpose of the expansion, its actual or probable course around Rome, and historical background and evaluation, etc. This study aims at investigating the purpose and significance of Claudius’ pomerial expansion within a wider context of his imperial rule and administration. To achieve this goal, in Chapter 2, we will briefly review the history of the creation and expansion of the pomerium in Rome before the Claudian period and investigate their motives, circumstances, and the meaning embedded in those actions. This will provide crucial information and comparisons to throw light on Claudius’ decision to extend it. In Chapter 3 the reconstructed course of Claudius’ pomerium will be dealt with to reexamine the newly included areas, to highlight the close connection between his pomerium and the territorial expansion during his reign, the best example of which was the conquest of Britannia. Chapter 4 examines how the policy of imperial integration under Emperor Claudius by granting Roman citizenship more to the provincial population and admitting Roman citizens from the Gallic provinces into the Senate and the revival the ancient augural ceremony(salutis augurium) had any correlation with the symbolic significance of the newly extended pomerium in redefining the role of Rome as the imperial capital.
