초록

이 논문은 임진전쟁기에 선조가 명 장수에 대해 시행했던 외교 의례의 양상을 선조실록과 운천호종일기를 중심으로 살펴보면서, 선조가 명나라에 전달하고자 했던 메시지를 분석하는 것을 목표로 하였다.
선조 25년, 임진전쟁이 발생했던 초반에는 명나라에서 조선의 상황을 객관적으로 파악하려는 태도였기에, 선조는 명 사신과의 접견과 연례 절차를 초라하게 준비하면서 조선이 처해있는 힘겨운 상황을 전달하려 하였다. 하지만 선조 26년 평양 탈환 이후 강화교섭 시기에 접어들면서 선조는 몸소 명군을 예우하는 모습을 최대한 드러내면서 그들의 조력을 이끌어내려는 태도를 보였다. 선조는 자신이 직접 명 장수에 대해 사배謝拜와 고두례를 행하거나 몸소 나서서 명 하졸들까지 모두 예우하려 했다. 선조는 명나라에 대해 감사를 표하면서 한편으로는 절박함을 전달하고 협상을 원활하게 진행시키기 위해 노력하였다.
김용이 남긴 사초인 운천호종일기를 통해 선조실록에서 누락된 의례의 사례까지 확인할 수 있었다. 선조실록을 통해 선조가 이여송에게 사은의 의미로 사배례와 고두례까지 행했던 모습을 확인할 수 있었고, 운천호종일기를 통해 선조가 이여송과 양원에게 직접 잔을 올리는 예우까지 더하면서 절박한 뜻을 전하려 했음을 확인하였다. 선조가 의례를 통해 시각화되는 모든 외교적 행위를 얼마나 중요하게 여겼는지 충분히 짐작할 수 있었다.
조선은 당시 존망의 갈림길에 서 있었고 선조는 국왕의 신분으로 할 수 있는 모든 예우를 동원하여 명나라의 원조를 끌어내고 유지하려 했다. 임진전쟁 이후로도 조선에서는 명에 대한 재조지은再造之恩의 이념을 강조하였는데, 이러한 인식은 임진전쟁 시기를 거치면서 축적되고 재생산되고 또한 굳어져 갔던 것이다.

영어초록

This paper aims to examine the implementation patterns of diplomatic ceremonies carried out by King Seonjo towards Ming generals during the Imjin War era, focusing on the <Annals of the Joseon Dynasty> and the <Uncheonhojeon-ilgi>, with the goal of analyzing the messages King Seonjo intended to convey to the Ming dynasty based on these ceremonies.
In the 25th year of King Seonjo’s reign (1592), during the early stages of the Imjin War, there was an attitude in Ming China of seeking an objective understanding of the situation in Joseon. Therefore, King Seonjo, while meeting with Ming envoys and preparing for ceremonies, tried to convey the difficult situation facing Joseon in a modest manner. However, as the negotiations with Ming China and Japan began after the reclaim of Pyongyang in the 26th year of King Seonjo’s reign (1597), King Seonjo demonstrated a gesture of utmost respect towards the Ming army, aiming to solicit their support by openly showing deference to them. King Seonjo personally conducted bowing rituals of expressing gratitude to Ming generals and performed the ritual of touching his head to the ground, or prostration, himself. He also personally sought to entertain all Ming soldiers, going as far as to attend to them himself. While expressing gratitude to Ming China, King Seonjo also conveyed a sense of urgency and made efforts to facilitate smooth negotiations to progress.
Through Kim Yong’s historical record, <Uncheonhojeon-ilgi>, we can confirm examples of rituals omitted from the <Annals of the Joseon Dynasty>. Through the <Annals of the Joseon Dynasty>, it was confirmed that King Seonjo performed a ritual of bowing as a gesture of gratitude to Yi Yeosong, a Ming general. Additionally, through the <Uncheonhojeon-ilgi>, it was confirmed that King Seonjo conveyed his urgent intentions by personally offering a cup of alcohol to Yi Yeosong and Yangwon. We can sufficiently surmise how highly King Seonjo regarded all diplomatic actions visualized through rituals.
At that time, Joseon stood at a crossroads of survival, and King Seonjo, utilizing all the courtesies afforded by his royal status, sought to solicit and maintain Ming China’s support. Even after the Imjin War, Joseon continued to emphasize the ideology of the “grace of restoring the country (再造之恩)”, referring to the favor of restoring the nation granted by Ming China. This perception had been accumulated, reproduced, and solidified throughout the period of the Imjin War.
