초록

문학 연구에 있어 ‘전집’은 작가·작품 분석의 기초가 되는 자료로 기능할 뿐만 아니라 한 언어문화권의 문학적 유산으로도 여겨진다. 특히 한국 근현대 문학사에서 전집은 1960년대를 전후하여 본격적으로 생산, 유통되면서 학술적 논의의 바탕이 되어왔다. 그중 본고에서는 전후 한국문학사의 새로운 기원으로서 작가 이상(李箱)을 가시화시키며 작품 발굴과 연구의 중심이 되었던 ‘이상 전집’의 흐름과 특징에 관해 살펴보고자 한다.
이상에 대한 최초의 선집을 펴낸 김기림으로부터 임종국, 이어령, 김윤식·이승훈, 김주현, 권영민 등의 전집 계보는 그 자체로 이상 문학에 대한 연구를 확산시키고 해석의 장을 연 성과이기도 했다. 하지만 동시에 새로운 텍스트의 발굴과 이를 둘러싼 여러 논점들이 지속적으로 생겨나면서 텍스트에 대한 분석과 평가는 끊임없이 갱신되어왔고 그리하여 텍스트 본래의 의미로부터는 다소 동떨어져 있거나 과장된 맥락에서 읽히기도 했다. 본고는 이러한 인식을 바탕으로 각 이상 전집의 특징을 비교, 분석하고 현재적 관점에서 다시 이상의 텍스트를 준별해 보고자 한다. 이상의 텍스트를 정확하게 읽어내면서 동시에 새로운 해석의 가능성을 추구하는 것은 그간의 이상 연구가 지향해 왔던 일관된 방향이었으나, 이상이 기존의 문학 개념과 조금은 다른 방식의 글쓰기를 시도했던 작가임을 고려할 때 전통적인 문학관에서 탈피할 필요가 있다. 이는 단순히 원전을 찾아 정확히 옮기는 문제가 아니라 텍스트를 둘러싼 맥락들을 충분히 고려하면서, 특히 이상 문학의 장르적 특징에 주목해 이상의 텍스트를 기존의 ‘문학’ 개념을 넘어설 수 있는 가능성으로 읽어내는 일이 요구된다는 의미이다.
본고는 시와 소설, 그림과 건축 등을 넘나들던 이상의 ‘혼종성’이 텍스트의 차원에서 어떻게 전위적으로 재현되었는지, 또 그것이 기존의 문학적 구획을 벗어나 텍스트가 가진 물리적 한계를 어떻게 극복해 보려 했는지 논증하면서 열린 텍스트로서의 이상 문학의 의의를 재차 강조하고자 한다.

영어초록

In literary studies, ‘complete works’ serve not only as the basis for analyzing authors and works, but also as the literary heritage of a language and culture. In particular, in the history of Korean modern and contemporary literature, complete works have been produced and circulated in earnest since the 1960s and have been the basis for scholarly discussion. In this article, I will examine the flow and characteristics of the ‘The Complete Works of Ri Sang’ that have become the center of discovery and research, making Ri Sang as a new origin of postwar Korean literary history.
From Kim Ki-rim, who published the first anthology on Ri Sang, to Lim Jong-guk, Lee Eo-ryung, Kim Yun-sik, Lee Seung-hoon, Kwon Young-min, Kim Joo-hyun, and others, the genealogy of complete works was itself an achievement that spread the study of Ri Sang’s literature and opened up the field of interpretation. At the same time, however, the discovery of new texts and the continuous emergence of various controversies surrounding them have led to a constant renewal of the analysis and evaluation of the texts, and as a result, they have been read in a context that is somewhat distant from their original meaning or exaggerated. Based on this recognition, this book compares and analyzes the characteristics of each of the Ideal Collections and attempts to reclassify Ri Sang’s texts from a contemporary perspective. While accurately reading Ri Sang’s texts and pursuing the possibility of new interpretations has been a consistent direction of Ri Sang’s research, it is necessary to depart from the traditional view of literature, considering that Ri Sang was a writer who tried to write in a way that was slightly different from the conventional concept of literature. This means that it is not simply a matter of finding and accurately translating the original texts, but of reading Ri Sang’s texts with full consideration of the contexts surrounding the texts, paying particular attention to the genre features of Ibsen’s literature, as a possibility to go beyond the existing concept of ‘literature’.
This paper will reemphasize the significance of Ri Sang’s literature as an open text by discussing how the ‘hybridity’ of Ri Sang, which crossed poetry and fiction, painting and architecture, was avant-garde at the level of the text, and how it attempted to overcome the physical limitations of the text by escaping the conventional literary categories.
