용인 화운사(華雲寺) 목조아미타불좌상 연구 (A Study on the Wooden Seated Amitabha Buddha Statue at Hwaunsa­Temple in Yongin)

초록

본 논문은 경기도 용인시에 위치한 화운사 대웅전에 봉안된 목조아미타불좌상에 대한 연구이다. 이 불상 복장물에는 여러 쪽으로 분리되어 있기는 하지만 간기(刊記)가 기록된 다수의 『법화경』과 『화엄경』 등 시주자 명단 1매가 남아 있다. 비록 조성년도와 조각승, 조성이력 등을 확실히 알 수 있는 조성기는 없지만, 간기가 있는 경전 및 시주질이 남아 있어 조성년대를 파악할 수 있는 근거 자료가 된다.
화운사 목조아미타불좌상에 대하여 고찰해본 결과 다음과 같은 결론을 얻을 수 있었다.
첫째, 불복장물에 간기가 있는 4종의 경전과 시주자 명단이 발견되어 이 불상의 조성년대와 참여자 일부를 살펴볼 수 있었다. 특히 1628년(崇禎 元年)에 조성되었을 가능성을 밝힐 수 있어서 조선 후반기 초기의 불상으로 편년을 설정할 수 있다는 점에서 학술적 가치가 매우 높다고 하겠다.
둘째, 불상 밑바닥에 ‘西方佛’이라고 묵서되어 있어 정확한 불상의 성격을 파악할 수 있었다. 또한 화운사 목조아미타불좌상 ‘西方佛’과 목조약사불좌상 ‘東方佛’은 도상과 양식특징으로 보아 동일 시기에 동일 조각승에 의해 조성된 것으로 볼 수 있으며, 석가모니불상의 좌우 보처불상으로 조성한 삼세불상(三世佛像)일 가능성이 있어 불상조성의 사상적 배경을 이해할 수 있었다.
셋째, 17세기 초기에 조성된 불상들과 비교분석하여 화운사 목조아미타불좌상의 양식특징을 파악할 수 있었으며, 특히 ‘현진’ ‘무염’ ‘수연’ 유파가 조성했을 가능성을 엿볼 수 있어 영향관계를 짐작해 볼 수 있을 것이다.
화운사 목조아미타불좌상의 조형특징 및 작풍으로 미루어 보아 그 당시 최고의 조각승들의 참여로 이루어진 품격 있고 예술성이 뛰어난 불상임을 파악할 수 있었으며, 조성시기를 1628년으로 편년해 보았다는데 연구 의의를 두고자 한다.

영어초록

This study is a study on the wooden seated Amitabha Buddha statue enshrined in Daeungjeon of Hwaunsa temple located in Yongin‐si, Gyeonggi‐do. Although the contents‐kept‐inside of this Buddha statue are separated in many ways, there are a number of Lotus Sutra, Avatamsaka Sutra, etc. with imprints recorded, and also, a donator list remains. Although there is no creation document that clearly shows creation year, sculptor monk, and creation record, etc, sutras with imprint and a list of donation remain, which is the basis for understanding the chronology.
In the results of examining the wooden seated Amitabha Buddha statue at Hwaunsa temple, the following conclusions were drawn.
First, four Sutras and a list of donators with imprints on the contents‐kept‐inside were discovered, allowing the chronology of the Buddha statues and some of the participants to be examined. In particular, it is possible to reveal the possibility that it was created in '1628 (崇禎元年)', and so the academic value is very high in that the chronicle can be set as Buddha statues in the early period of the late Joseon era.
Second, the ink inscription of 'western Buddha (西方佛)' is written at the bottom of the Buddha statues, so the exact theme of the Buddha statues can be seen. Therefore, according to the iconography and style features of the wooden seated Amitabha Buddha statue ‘western Buddha (西方佛)’ and the wooden seated Bhaisajyaguru statue ‘eastern Buddha (東方佛)’ in Hwaunsa temple, it can be seen that they were created at the same era by the same sculptor monk, and there is a possibility that they are the left and right attendant Bodhisattva statues of the Shakayamuni Buddha statue in the Three Worlds Buddha statues (三世佛像), which brings about an understanding of the ideological background of the Buddha statues.
Third, by comparing and analyzing the Buddha statues created in the early 17th century, it was possible to grasp the characteristic features of the wooden seated Amitabha Buddha statue at Hwaunsa temple, and in particular, by peeping at the possibility of being created by the school of ‘Hyeon‐jin’, ‘Mu‐yeom’, and ‘Su‐yeon’, it was possible to predict the influencing relationships.
The research significance is in that based on the formative art features and style of the wooden seated Amitabha Buddha statue at Hwaunsa temple, it is possible to grasp that it was a classy and artistic Buddha statue made by the best sculptor monk at the time, and try to chronicle the time of creation to 1628.
The fact that the wooden seated Amitabha Buddha statue at Hwaunsa temple can greatly contribute to the studies of the Buddhist sculpture history in the second half of the Joseon era.
