忠州地域의 百濟 城郭에 대한 새로운 접근 (A New Approach to the Baekje Fortressin the Chungju Region)

초록

본고는 충주지역 백제성곽의 기존 연구를 재검토하여 새로운 견해를 제시하기 위해 작성되었다. 먼저 충주와 인접 수계의 백제성곽에 대한 현황을 살폈다. 그리고 고고학적 검토를 통해 재논의가 필요한 사항을 도출하였다.
탄금대 토성은 기존에 알려진 축조기법 외에도 기반암을 사선으로 깎고, 성 내측에 사선 또는 수평으로 토사나 석재 등을 쌓았던 방식이 존재했음을 파악하였다. 이곳은 내성의 문지일 가능성도 제시되었다. 또한 현지조사 결과 기존에 알려진 토성(내성) 외에 외성과 부성이 존재할 가능성을 상정하였다.
장미산성은 계곡부 성벽과 부뚜막의 관계를 명확하게 규명해야 축조 및 경영 시기를 구분할 수 있을 것으로 보인다. 이를 위해 계곡부 남북 방향의 종단면 분석을 통한 토성과 석성, 부뚜막의 층위 등 면밀한 분석이 필요할 것이다. 또한 기조사된 결과와 비교하여 성벽의 특수성과 보편성을 정리해야 한다는 점을 제안하였다.

영어초록

This study aims to reassess previous research on Baekje fortresses in the Chungju region and present a new perspective. First, an overview of the Baekje fortresses distributed along the Namhan River and Dalcheon River systems in the Chungju area was examined. Additionally, archaeological issues requiring reexamination were identified, leading to the discovery of several significant points of contention.
Regarding the Tangeumdae Earthen Fortress, it was found that, in addition to the previously known earthen wall (inner fortress) construction techniques, another method involved diagonally cutting the bedrock and stacking soil or stone materials either diagonally or horizontally on the inner side of the fortress. There is also a possibility that this area served as a gate site for the inner fortress. Furthermore, field surveys suggested the potential existence of an outer fortress and a subsidiary fortress beyond the previously known inner fortress.
For Jangmisan Fortress, clarifying the relationship between the valley wall and the brazier facility (residential site) is crucial for distinguishing the construction and management periods. To achieve this, a detailed stratigraphic analysis of the earthen and stone walls, as well as the residential sites in the valley through a longitudinal section analysis along the north-south direction, is necessary. Additionally, a comparison with previous excavation results at Jangmisan Fortress is required to summarize the fortress walls’ unique and common characteristics.
Jangtaesan Fortress has been recognized as comprising a Baekje earthen fortress at its summit and an outer Goryeo-era fortress. However, this study proposes the possibility that the Baekje earthen fortress may have been a double-walled fortress composed of an inner and outer fortress. Moreover, field surveys confirmed the partial remains of an earthen rampart. Therefore, a more in-depth academic investigation is required for Jangtaesan Fortress.
Gyeonhak-ri Earthen Fortress is a rectangular earthen fortress adjacent to a river, making it unique. Notably, the spacing of the embankments may have been altered from the previously known 3.3 meters to a narrower range of 1.5 to 1.7 meters. This indicates the need for a detailed academic investigation to reassess the construction period of the Gyeonhak-ri Earthen Fortress.
This study is significant as it proposes new research topics for understanding Baekje’s waterway expansion along the Namhan River, Baekje’s territorial advancement into the Chungju region, and the struggle between Baekje and Goguryeo over control of this area.
