근대체험의 내면화와 새로운 글쓰기 (Internalization of the Modern Experience and a New Writing)

초록

1920년대를 전후한 시기, 정(情)과 생명을 모토로 하는 개인적 글쓰기 기획은 매체를 통해 유사한 내용과 형식으로 순환, 모방, 재생산 된다. 매체를 지배하고 있던 이 글쓰기 현상은 사적 개인의 등장, 개인적 자아의 발견 등의 문학사적 의미를 지니게 된다.
이 논문은, 그러한 텍스트들이 명시하고 있는 수많은 개인 저자들이 왜 천편일률적인 한사람의 목소리처럼 기억되는 것인가를 묻는다. 그리고 개인의 감정이라고 표현되는 것의 내용과 글쓰기 방식이 대부분 매우 유사한 양상으로 존재하고 있다는 점에 주목하였다. 그리하여 이 글쓰기 기획이 지향했던 '공감'보다 위압감이 지배적인 이유, 개인 감정과 자기를 강조하고 있지만 정작 개인보다는 그런 류의 글쓰기 방식을 앞세우고 있는 혹은 앞세울 수 있는 집단(지식인층)의 힘이 더 강하게 감지되는 것에 대한 해명을 시도하였다.
한국 근대문학 연구에서 근대 주체의 성립, 개인 내면의 발견에 대한 논의가 가능했던 것은 그것을 가능하게 한 새로운 글쓰기가 제도화되면서부터 였다는 것을 부인할 수는 없다. 그러나 그러한 새로운 글쓰기 방식으로 등장한 고백체(일기, 편지 등)의 감정 토로가 그와 다른 방식으로 매체를 지배했던 계몽적 글쓰기와 꼭 같은 방식으로 매체를 장악하고 있었다는 사실도 간과해서는 안 된다. 내밀하지 않지만 개인을 내세우고 있는 그 글쓰기는 글쓰는 사람의 정체성을 확립시키는 글쓰기임에는 틀림이 없었던 것 같다. 그런데 여기에서의 정체성은 근대 개인으로서의 자각, 확립이었다기보다 근대문화를 이끌고, 계몽시키고, 선취해야 하는 조선 근대 문화의 추동자로서의 주체, 즉 집단적 주체에 대한 자각에 가까웠다고 볼 수 있다. 그 집단 주체는 매체에서 청년으로 표상되는 근대 주체로, 신교육을 받은 지식인(유학생)으로 구체화될 수 있다.
이러한 맥락에서 현상윤의 글은 독특한 위치에 놓이게 된다. 특권화된 제스츄어를 소거시키는 글쓰기를 하고 있기 때문이다. 그는, 지식인의 집단 정체성을 지속적으로 확인시켜주고 있는 당대의 근대 담론과 달리, 인간 내면을 구심력으로 하는 근대적 개인의 글쓰기를 보여주고 있다.

영어초록

Before and after the 1920's, the individual writing planning, with a motto of human nature and life, was circulated, replicated, and reproduced. This phenomenon of writing that was dominating the media carries an implication in the history of literature in that it shows the appearance of a private person and discovery of an individual ego.
This paper inquires why myriads of individual authors, whom those texts represent, are remembered as if they were a monotonous single voice. In addition, it pays attention to the point that the contents and methods of writing, which are argued to express an individual emotion, mostly exist in a very similar way. In due course, it attempts to explicate the reasons why the sense of coercion, rather than 'sympathy' which this writing planning aims at, is predominant, and why the force of a group or the elite, rather than an individual, who is representing or can represent this type of writing, is sensed more strongly even though a private feeling and self are emphasized.
It is undeniable that the discussion about the establishment of a modern ego and discovery of an individual mind in the study of modern Korean literature became possible since a new way of writing, enabling that discussion, was institutionalized. It is, however, also undeniable that the outpouring of feelings, with a confessional style as in a diary or letter, which showed up due to that novel way of writing, was dominating the media in the same fashion as the writing of enlightenment which wielded the media with another distinct style. The way of writing that is expressional of an individual, if not confidential, seems obviously to be a composing style of securing the author's identity. The identity, here, is assessed to be a realization and establishment of a collective subject, rather than a modern individual, that acts as a trigger for the modern culture of Joseon, with an obligation to lead, illuminate, and preoccupy modernity. That collective subject, symbolized as a youth in the media, is a modem nucleus, and can be embodied in an intellectual benefited from a new education, i.e., a student having studied abroad.
In this context, the writings of Sang-yoon Hyun are uniquely situated because they are eliminating the privileged gesture. He, unlike the other those-days modern discussions that were continuously ascertaining the collective identity of intellectuals, was a modern individual who ventured on a writing with a center around the human interior.
