초록

이 논문은 로버트 알트만의 <긴 이별 The Long Goodbye>(1973)과 레이먼드 챈들러의 『기나긴 이별 The Long Goodbye』(1953)에 표현되는 시대상과 필립 말로우의 비교를 통하여, 각 작품의 사회적 맥락과 함의를 고찰하였다.
1973년 미국 할리우드를 배경으로 레이먼드 챈들러의 1953년 원작을영화화한 것은 단지, 하드보일드 추리소설의 명작을 차용하여, 영화적 성공을 누리기 위함은 아닐 것으로 보인다. 때문에 각 작품이 제작된 시기의사회적 맥락을 살피고, <긴 이별>이 원작의 목적과 맥락을 전복하려는 의도를 지니고 있는지에 대해 주목할 필요가 있다. 이를 위해, 미국의 사회적변화를 파악하고, 각 텍스트에 드러나는 인물과 사회·정치적인 상황에 주목하여, <긴 이별>이 『기나긴 이별』의 시대적 맥락을 어떻게 탈역사화하여 변주하고 있는지 살펴보았다.
레이먼드 챈들러의 『기나긴 이별』 속의 필립 말로우는 어둡고 부패한현실 속에서 낭만주의적 기사도를 지니고 있으며, 도덕적 순결성을 지키려 한다. 다소 냉소적인 주변부 인물이지만, 결국 사건을 해결하고 경외심을 가질 수 있는 백인 남성으로 표현된다. 악인들은 자본주의와 급격한 산업화로 부를 축재한 이들, 그에 따른 도덕성의 타락을 나타낸다. 그가 그려내는 악인은 부패한 사회의 부산물이자, 부패하고 무능한 공권력의 산물로 볼 수 있을 것이다. 이 역시 미국의 역사적 변화와 그에 따른 혼란과 연결된다. 한편, 로버트 알트만의 <긴 이별>은 챈들러의 『기나긴 이별』의 내러티브와 플롯을 차용하여, 시대에 맞게 탈역사화한 좋은 예시로 볼 수 있을 것이다. 하드보일드 추리소설의 전형적인 백인 사립 탐정을 유대인으로 설정하고, 악인의 표현을 입체적으로 변화 시켰다. 사회의 변화와 부작용, 공권력에 대한 불신을 영화 속에 자연스럽게 녹여낸 것은 사회에 대한이해가 없다면, 쉽게 시도할 수 없는 문제이다. 각 텍스트는 미국 사회의 이슈들과 미국적 가치의 정체성 혼란과 연결되고 있다. 더불어 로버트 알트만의 각색의 현대화 전략을 통한 탈역사화는 하드보일드 추리소설, 그리고 필름누아르의 인물전형을 전복시키면서, 저항의 시기에 생성된 대항문화를 대변하는 필립 말로우를 새롭게 탄생시킨 것으로 볼 수 있다. 이는 기성세대와 영화적 관습의 전복을 시도하고, 그를 통해 자기반성을 실천하고 있다. 1940년대의 정형화를 전복시켰던 『기나긴 이별』의 또 다른정형성과 의도를 전복시켜, 1새로운 가치와 의미를 생성하고 있는 것이다.

This paper examines the social context and implications of each work through the comparison of Philip Marlowe with the periodicals expressed in Robert Altman's The Long Goodbye (1973) and Raymond Chandler's 『The Long Goodbye』 (1953).
In 1973, Raymond Chandler's 1953 film was filmed in Hollywood, USA, but it is not intended to enjoy cinematic success by borrowing masterpieces of hard-boiled mystery novels. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the social context along with the American value of each work at the time of production, and to pay attention to whether The Long Goodbye has the intention to overthrow the purpose and context of the original work. For this purpose, the change of American values was grasped, and the characters and social and political situations revealed in each text were noted to examine how The Long Goodbye de-historicized and changed the historical context of 『The Long Goodbye』.
Philip Marlowe in Raymond Chandler's 『The Long Goodbye』 has romantic chivalry in a dark and corrupt reality and tries to keep moral purity. It is expressed as a white man who is a somewhat cynical peripheral figure, but who can eventually solve the case and have awe. The wicked represent those who have accumulated wealth through capitalism and rapid industrialization, and the fall of morality accordingly. The wickedness he depicts can be seen as a by-product of a corrupt society and a product of corrupt and incompetent public power, which is also linked to the turmoil of American society from the 1930s to the 1950s. On the other hand, Robert Altman's The Long Goodbye can be seen as a good example of de-historization according to the times by borrowing the narrative and plot of Chandler's 『The Long Goodbye』, which has previous conservative values. The typical white private detective of the hard-boiled mystery novel was set as a Jew, and the expression of the wicked was changed in three dimensions.It is a problem that can not be easily attempted if there is no understanding of society that naturally dissolves the distrust of social change, side effects, and public power in the film. Each text is linked to the issues of American society and the identity confusion of American values. In addition, Robert Altman's de-historicization through the modernization strategy of adaptation can be seen as a new birth of Philip Marlowe, who represents the counterculture created during the period of resistance, overturning the hard-boiled mystery novel and film noir character.It attempts to overthrow the older generation and cinematic conventions and practices self-reflection through it, overthrowing another formality and intention of 『The Long Goodbye』 that overthrew the formalization of the 1940s, and creating new values and meanings.
