토마스 아퀴나스 『신학대전』의 첫 한문 번역 『초성학요』(超性學要)의 특징과 의의 - 아리스토텔레스 철학 용어 번역을 중심으로 - (The First Chinese Translation of Thomas Aquinas’ Summa Theologiae: Characteristics and Significance of the Chao xing xue yao - Focusing on the Translation of the Terms of Aristotle’s Philosophy -)

초록

이 연구는 토마스 아퀴나스의 『신학대전』의 최초의 한문본인 『초성학요』(超性學要)를 소개하는 데 일차적인 목적이 있다. 따라서 먼저 역자인 루도비코 불리오의 생애를 소개하고, 『초성학요』의 번역 범위와 영향사를 다룬다. 그리고 구체적으로 불리오의 서문과 범례를 분석하여 번역의 특징을 밝히고, 『초성학요』 연구의 중요성과 의의를 밝힌다.
본고가 규명한 『초성학요』에 나타난 번역의 특징은 두 가지로 요약된다. 첫째, 『초성학요』는 중국어와 서양 언어의 차이 그리고 동서양 문화의 격차를 메우기 위해 선행 번역서들에서 수십 년 간 축적되어 온 다양한 번역을 흥미롭게 결합하는 특징을 가진다. 둘째, 『초성학요』는 단순한 라틴어-중국어 번역에 머물지 않고, 텍스트를 문화적 맥락에 위치시켜 탈맥락화와 재맥락화를 시도하는 ‘문화적 번역’의 특징을 보여준다.
마지막으로 본고에서 번역하고 주해한 텍스트만으로도 『초성학요』가 동서문화 교류 연구와 동아시아에서의 『신학대전』 수용 그리고 서양 개념어 번역의 비교 연구의 보고(寶庫)임을 충분히 확인할 수 있었다.

영어초록

This paper aims to investigate the characteristics and significance of Chao xing xue yao, the first Chinese translation of Thomas Aquinas’ Summa Theologiae. To this end, it first introduces the life of Ludovico Buligo, its translator (2), deals with the scope of translation and the influence of Chao xing xue yao (3), elucidates characteristics of translation with focus on Buligo’s own preface for the first ten volumes (自序) and explanatory notes (凡例) (4), and stresses the importance of the study of Chao xing xue yao (5).
This study suggests that Buligo should proceed to the third part after completing the translation of the first part of Summa Theologiae, because the third part deals with Jesus Christ, and because the second part is too vast to translate in a short time and contains some ethical issues in conflict with Chinese traditional ethics. Furthermore, it is for the understanding of Chinese audience that Buligo changes the order of the original text of each article in Summa Theologiae by introducing the authority, then proceeding to Thomas’ own answers, and finally presenting each objection with its solution. This study demonstrates that as for the terms for theologia, Buligo utilizes supernatural science (超性學) in addition to existent terms such as science of Tao (道科), science of heaven (天學), or a transliterated form (陡祿日亞) coined by his predecessors, and that this word succinctly summarizes the concept of theology formulated in Summa Theologiae I, 1, 1, c. Finally this study corroborates that in his explanatory remarks Buligo borrows the description of four causes, the definition of substance and accident, and ten categories from True Meaning of the Lord of Heaven by Matteo Ricci with slight modifications. Besides the terms for ten categories are slightly different from True Meaning of the Lord of Heaven, The Investigation of the Theory of Names (『名理探』), and Chao xing xue yao, these demonstrate that Buglio, borrowing the terminology made by his forerunners, modified and recontextualized some words. All these examples show that Chao xing xue yao clearly displays characteristics of cultural translation. Through analyzing and expounding the texts, this study shows the significance of Chao xing xue yao as treasure of East-West cultural exchanges and as foundation for the study of reception history of Summa Theologiae as well as for the comparison of translation of philosophical and theological concepts in East Asia.
