초록

This article is a critical thesis of 『Goryeo Period Hunter Yangsucheok(楊水尺) and Settlement Society』 written by Professor Lee Byunghee. In his book, the author summarized the characteristics of Yangsoocheok in the Goryeo Dynasty into five categories, and found and presented very elaborate arguments for each characteristic.
First of all, the author saw that Yangsucheok began with people living a wandering life without being absorbed into Goryeo. Their main livelihood was hunting, commerce and handicraft production, and it was identified that they were also engaged in slaughter activities. Also they participated in the war as warriors and were absorbed into Goryeo society, but there were also cases where they rebelled against Goryeo.
In addition, Yangsucheok was divided into Jaeins(才人) and Gisaengs(妓生) the late Goryeo Dynasty, and finally settled down after the founding of Joseon. The author found that their biggest characteristic is that they are people with a hopung(胡風, the customs of the northern nomads). In Goryeo, indigenous customs, Chinese customs, and customs of northern peoples were harmonized, and Yangsucheok was the one who led the boom.
The reasons why Yangsucheok, who wandered around as hunters, settled down after the founding of Joseon Dynasty, were focused on the decrease in game due to population growth and the expansion of clearing due to agricultural development. Due to changes in the ecological environment, Yangsucheok who were hunters had no choice but to settle down. In that respect, this book can be evaluated as providing an opportunity to think about how changes in the ecological environment affect human history.
