소설 교육 왜 실천하기 어려운가? (Why is fictional education difficult to put in practice?)

초록

서사문학의 범위는 넓지만 특히 중‧고등학교 국어과에서는 현대소설이 압도적인 비중으로 다루어지고 있다. 그러나 현장 교사들은 여전히 소설 교육을 어떻게 해야 할지 막막해 한다. 현장 교사들이 소설 교육을 어려워하는 이유는 무엇 때문인가.
먼저 교육과정의 문제를 생각할 수 있다. 교육과정에서 문학 영역의 ‘성격’에서는 ‘작품을 찾아 읽고 해석하며, 문학작품을 생산’하는 과목이라고 했으나 ‘교수‧학습 운용’에서는 ‘작품을 학습자의 삶과 관련지어 봄’에 초점을 두고 있다. 그러다 보니 상대적으로 ‘찾아 읽고 해석’하는 과정을 소홀히 할 수밖에 없다. 이런 탓에 ‘성취 기준’을 제시했으나 그 수준이 모호하고, 제시된 작품의 범위와 수준도 지나치게 추상적이다.
이와 같은 교육과정을 바탕으로 제작된 교교과서들은 대체로 ‘활동 중심’이라는 평을 듣는다. 그러나 ‘활동 중심’이 학습자의 활동 중심 수업이 되지 못하고 활동만 요란할 뿐 남는 것이 없다고 비판을 받기도 한다. 소설 한 편을 두고 많은 활동을 배치했지만 그 활동들이 소설을 깊이 이해하고 삶을 성찰하도록 이끌고 있다는 느낌이 별로 들지 않는 경우가 많았기 때문이다.
교과 교육이 각종 시험에 지나치게 종속되고 있는 측면이 강하다. 그런데 학생들이 치러야 하는 대부분의 시험은 5지선다형 시험의 형식을 취하고 있다. 일부 서술형 평가를 실시하기도 하지만 평가의 공정성 등을 의식해서 거의 단답형 문제에 가까울 뿐이다. 이런 평가 방식으로는 학생들이 소설 한 편을 온전하게 읽고 의미를 해석하고, 나름의 감상을 하고 있는지 평가하기는 어려울 것이다. 이런 시험의 형식을 거쳐서 산출된 성적이 학생의 문학 능력과 긴밀하게 연관되었다고 보기 어려울 수 있는 것이다.
학생들이 소설을 읽고, 스스로 해석하고, 의미를 재구성할 수 있는 능력, 그리고 기초적인 비평 능력을 기를 수 있는 수업이 되기 위해서는 교육과정, 교과서를 바람직하게 구성해야 할 것이다. 아울러 각종 시험의 기본 틀을 전환하는 노력도 필요하다.

영어초록

The range of narrative literature is extensive but modern fiction is dominantly handled in the subject Korean language especially in Middle and High School. However, on-the-field teachers are still at a loss as to how to provide fictional education. Then what is the reason behind the difficulty faced by on-the-field teachers in regards to fictional education?First, we can consider the problems within the educational process. The ‘characteristics’ in the domain of literature in the educational process defines it as a subject which “searches and interprets literary work and produces literature”, however the ‘application of teaching/learning’ focuses mainly on ‘relating the literary work to the learner’s life’. Accordingly, the process of ‘searching, reading, and interpreting’ can only be relatively neglected. As such, an ‘achievement standard’ was proposed, however, its standards are ambiguous and the range and level of the proposed work are excessively abstract.
Textbooks produced based on such educational procedure generally receive the assessment that they are ‘activity-oriented.’ However, such ‘activity orientation’ sometimes receives the criticism that it is unable to become the activity oriented class of the learner and such activity is only clamorous without much substance. This is because although many activities are arranged surrounding one fictional novel, in many cases, such activities fail to understand the fictional novel in depth and induce introspection of life.
Curriculum based education tends to excessively dependant on various exams. However, most of the exams that students need to take are in form of 5 multiple choice questions. Some exams include essay or written style evaluation, however, most of the exams are close to short-answer questions due to fairness issues regarding evaluation. Such evaluation method will make it difficult to assess whether students are soundly reading the fictional novel, interpreting its significance, and making their own opinions or impressions. As such, it will be difficult to state that the calculated exam results which pass through the aforementioned exam form are closely related to the student’s literary skills.
In order to become a class which promotes students to read fictional novels and interpret the significance on their own, a class which enhances the student’s ability to reconstitute its meaning and provide criticism, the educational process and textbooks should be appropriately and desirably constructed. Furthermore, efforts in converting the basic stereotype of various exams will also be necessary.
