百濟 武王의 太子 冊封과 王權의 變動 (Installation of Crown Prince and Fluctuation of Regal Power of King Mu of Baekje)

초록

본고에서는 무왕 말기의 정국변화에 대한 검토를 통해 무왕 31년 갑작스러운 사비환궁의 문제, 무왕 33년에 의자가 태자에 책봉되는 정치적 배경, 그리고 무왕 말기의 정치적 상황과 왕권의 변동 등을 종합적으로 검토하였다.
일반적으로 무왕은 익산경영과 대규모의 토목공사를 통해 왕권강화에 성공한 왕으로 평가되었다. 그렇지만 무왕의 갑작스런 사비환궁, 그리고 사비환궁 이후의 태자책봉, 무왕 말기에 나타난 국정상황 등을 통해 볼 때 기존의 견해와는 다른 정치적 의미를 찾아볼 수 있다. 즉, 무왕의 사비환궁은 익산세력의 약화와 사비지역을 정치적 기반으로 한 사씨세력의 부상을 의미하는 것으로 이해된다. 사씨의 등장 배경에는 대신라 및 고구려 방비, 그리고 익산경영에 따른 군사적ㆍ경제적 필요성으로 인해 무왕이 大姓貴族 가운데 가장 세력이 컸던 사씨와의 정치적 타협의 결과로 이해된다. 또한 사비로 환궁한 이후 의자의 태자 책봉도 당시의 정국변동과 서로 밀접하게 관련되었는데, 이는 사씨의 정략적 지지에 의한 결과였다. 즉, 사비로의 還宮과 익산세력의 축출, 그리고 사씨 출신 太子妃의 納妃를 전제로 이루어진 지지였다고 하겠다. 그리고 결과적으로 사씨세력과 익산세력과의 정치적 力學關係에서 사씨가 승리하였음을 의미한다.
또한 무왕 말기의 정국상황은 태자에 책봉된 의자가 대신라전 등 국정의 상당부분을 위임받아 권한을 행사하였으며, 무왕은 上王(大王)으로 현실정치에서 물러나 있었던 것으로 추정된다. 뿐만 아니라 무왕은 638년 3월 이후에서 639년 정월 이전에익산 왕궁성으로 다시 行幸하여 그곳에서 사망하였을 것으로 추정된다. 무왕 夫妻의 능으로 비정되는 익산 쌍릉의 존재, <觀世音應驗記>의 枳慕密地 천도 및 제석정사의 중건내용, 미륵사지 서탑의 舍利奉安 儀式, 그리고 왕의 ‘東西兩城’ 거주에 대한 기록 등은 그러한 사실을 實證的으로 보여주는 자료들이라고 하겠다.

영어초록

In this piece of writing, I have examined comprehensively, by reviewing political situation change during the end period of king Mu’s reign, the sudden return to the palace in Sabee in the 31st year of king Mu’s reign, the political background for the stepson to be installed as the crown prince in the 33rd year of king Mu’s reign, and the political situation and the fluctuation of regal power in the end of king Mu’s reign.
King Mu is generally judged to have succeeded in strengthening the royal authority through Iksan administration and the civil engineering project in large scale. However, different political significance from the established point of view can be found when one considers the sudden return to the Sabee palace by king Mu, the installation of the crown prince after the return to the Sabee palace, and the political situation during the end period of king Mu’s reign. That is, the return to the Sabee palace by king Mu is understood as signifying the weakening of Iksan power and the rise of Sa family’s power with the political basis of Sabee region. The background for the appearance of Sa family is understood to be the result of king Mu’s political compromise with the Sa family whose power was the strongest among the nobility with noted family names under the circumstance of needing additional military and financial aid for the defence against Silla and Koguryeo as well as for Iksan administration. Moreover, the installation of the stepson as the crown prince after the return to the Sabee palace is closely related to the change of political situation at that time, which is the result of political support by Sa family. In short, it can be said to be the support based upon the return to the Sabee palace, the expulsion of Iksan power, and offering of crown prince’s wife from Sa family. In addition, it means the victory of Sa family in the political dynamics of Sa family power and Iksan power as the fnial outcome.
Furthermore, when one looks at the political situation of the end period of king Mu’s reign, the stepson who had been installed as the crown prince exercised the authority by being entrusted with most of state affairs such as the war against Silla, and king Mu is assumed to have stepped down from the realistic politics as the ex-king. Besides, king Mu is assumed to have died at the Iksan palace castle after he had moved back there at some point between March, 638 and January, 639. The existence of Iksan royal couple tombs that have been reviewed and corrected as king Mu’s couple tombs, the transfer of the capital to Jimomilji and reconstruction of Jeseokjeongsa temple that appeared in An Account of the Goddess of Mercy’s Omen(觀世音應驗記), enshrinement ceremony for small crystals found in cremated remains of monks in Mireuksaji stone pagoda, and the record of the king’s stay in ‘both east and west castles’ are all the data that demonstrate that fact positively.
