백제 의자왕대의 대신라 공세와 阿非知 (The Offensive to Silla in the Reign of King Uija(義慈王) of Baekje and Abiji(阿非知))

초록

641년 3월에 武王의 뒤를 이어 즉위한 義慈王은 이듬해 초 政變을 단행하여 정국을 장악하고, 7~8월에 신라를 공격해 大耶城을 비롯한 40여 성을 함락시켰다. 그 사이 원만한 대당 관계를 개설하였던 사실까지 고려해보면 의자왕이 일찍부터 즉위한 이후의 정국 구상을 마련해놓지 않았을까 짐작된다. 그런데 신라에 대해 대규모 공세를 펼쳤던 의자왕이 한편으로는 阿非知를 파견하는 등 불교 교류에 나섰던 것으로 보여 의문이 든다.
『三國遺事』 및 「皇龍寺 九層木塔 金銅刹柱本記」 등에 따르면 황룡사구층목탑을 세우는데 백제의 大匠 阿非知가 공식적으로 파견되었다고 한다. 이에 학계는 642~643년에 걸쳐 추진된 백제의 군사적 압박을 완화하기 위해 신라에서 문화 교류를 요청하였으며, 泗沘都城 遷都, 彌勒寺 石塔 축조 등으로 기술력을 축적하였던 백제가 이를 받아들였던 것으로 이해하고 있다. 사료에 드러난 慈藏의 건의 내용이나 신라 群臣의 논의를 검토해보면 신라의 교섭이 다분히 백제를 의식한 조처였음을 파악할 수 있다. 다만 백제와 신라의 교섭이 성사되고, 아비지가 공식적으로 파견된 때에도 양국 관계는 전혀 개선되지 않았다는 점에서 기존의 연구는 다소 아쉬움이 남는다.
『三國史記』에는 644년 9월과 645년 정월·3월·5월, 647년 10월, 648년 3월·4월, 649년 8월까지도 백제와 신라의 공방전이 계속 확인된다. 특히 아비지가 신라에서 활동 중이었던 645년에도 총 3차례의 군사적 충돌이 발생하였다. 이는 신라 측에서 당에 접근하여 고구려·백제가 협력하고 있다는 의혹을 제기하였고, 백제 의자왕이 扶餘康信을 파견하여 당 태종의 의심을 해소하였던 외교전 양상과 밀접한 관련이 있어 보인다. 사료에 따르면 의자왕은 643년 11월에 신라 공격을 중지하면서 부여강신을 보내 관련 의혹을 해명하였고, 곧이어 태종이 相里玄獎을 파견하였을 때에도 재차 사죄하면서 신라와 화해하겠다는 의사를 표하였다.
백제의 아비지 파견은 일련의 외교전 끝에 시행된 하나의 조처로 생각되며, 의자왕이 당 태종의 요구에 부응하기 위해 내놓은 가시적 화해 조치가 아니었을까 한다. 다만 의자왕의 대신라 공세 정책은 이후에도 큰 변화가 없었다고 생각되는 바 아비지 파견은 당 태종의 대외 전략에 맞서지 않으려는 일회성 시책에 불과할 뿐 실제 신라와의 관계 개선이나 화해를 의도하지는 않았다고 판단된다.

영어초록

King Uija succeeded to the throne after King Mu(武王) in March, 641 and initiated reforms early the following year to take control of the political situation. Afterward, in July and August, 642, Baekje attacked Silla and took about forty fortresses including Daeya castle(大 耶城). Considering the fact that he established smoother foreign relations with Tang while attacking Silla, it is estimated that he might have designed the political plans after his ascension to the throne earlier on. However, it is questioned that, on one hand, he seems to have been involved in exchange of Buddhism such as sending Abiji to Silla, on the other hand, taking the massive offensive against Silla.
According to 『Samgukyusa(三國遺事)』 and 「Hwangnyongsa Nine-story Wooden Pagoda Geumdongchaljubongi(皇龍寺 九層木塔 金銅 刹柱本記)」, it is showed that Abiji, a great master artisan of Baekje, was officially dispatched to participate in building Nine-story Wooden Pagoda of Hwangnyongsa. Accordingly, academic circles understand that Silla requested cultural exchanges to ease the military pressure of Baekje which happened from the year 642 to 643 and Baekje, which had accumulated technical skills by the transfer of the capital to Sabi, the construction of Stone Pagoda of Mireuksa(彌勒寺) and so on, accepted it.
Considering Jajang(慈藏)'s proposal contents and the discussion between the king and his vassals of Silla revealed from historical materials, it can be seen that Silla's negotiation was the step deliberately taken by being conscious of Baekje. This existing research theory argues that Silla suggested cultural exchanges to Baekje to escape its crisis and ease military conflicts, which seems not to be logically correct in that the relationship between both nations was not improved at all even while the negotiation between them was made and Abiji was officially dispatched.
According to 『Samguksagi(三國史記)』, it is showed that there were fierce battles between both nations in September 644, in January, March and May, 645, in October, 647, in March and April, 648, and in August, 649. In particular, even in 645 when Abiji was working in Silla, there were a total of three military collisions. This seems to be closely related to the diplomatic aspect that King Uija dispatched Buyeogangsin(扶餘康信) to resolve Taizong's suspicion after Silla raised the doubt that both Goguryeo and Baekje collaborated with each other and informed it of Tang. According to historical materials, Uija temporarily stopped the attack against Silla in November, 643, and explained the related doubt by dispatching Buyeogangsin. And then when Taizong sent Xiangli Xuanjiang(相里玄獎), Uija apologized again and expressed his intention to make up with Silla.
The dispatch of Abiji from Baekje is thought to be a measure implemented after a series of diplomatic battles and is understood to be just a visible reconciliation measure proposed by Uija to respond to Taizong's demand. Nevertheless, because it is thought that Uija's offensive policy toward Silla wasn't much changed since then, it seems that the dispatch of Abiji is only a one-off policy measure not to counter Taizong's foreign strategy and actually there wasn't the intention to improve the relation or make up with Silla.
