진허가허를 통해 본 옹고집전의 형성과 서사미학 (Formation of Seen through )

초록

이 글은 『雍固執傳』의 형성 근거가 된 작품을 찾아보고 작품의 서사미학,담론적 특성을 살피는데 초점이 있다. 판소리계 소설들은 일반적으로 근원이야기에서 판소리로, 그리고 판소리에서 소설로 이행했다고 파악한다. 그러나 『옹고집전』에 있어서는 옹고집 타령이 망실됨으로써 이런 단계적 접근이 힘들다. 다만 근원설화가 있다면 판소리 옹고집타령의 연창적 흔적을 어느 정도는 가늠해볼 수 있을 것이다. 그 점에서 여기서는 초기 『옹고집전』의 근원설화를 추적한 끝에 『眞許假許』를 지목했다. 18세기 작품인 『진허가허』는 원래 민담이 야담으로 정착한 것으로 虐僧, 眞假爭主 모티브를 갖추고 있으며 評決까지 갖추고 있어 출현시기, 내용, 형식면에서 『옹고집전』과 가장 근접해 있음이 드러난다. 『진허가허』는 지식인들을 위한 독서물이었으므로 곧바로 판소리사설로 이행할 수는 없었다. 여러 측면에 걸쳐 변개와 보완이 따랐던 것이다. 창자의 노래와 연기에 맞는 문체, 장면구성 등을 별도로 요구했는데 독자가 아닌 청중에게 공연적 즐거움과 교훈을 함께 전할 수 있게끔 한 것이 옹고집타령의 사설이었다고 본다. 고상한 한문투의 언어 대신 민중적 언어, 사고 등이 적극 주입되고 결과 위주의 설명대신 독립된 장면 중심으로 서사구성이 달라졌음을 초기 『옹고집전』을 통해 확인할 수 있다. 주제 면에서 두 작품은 불교를 배척하는 세력에 대한 비판, 저항의 의지를 보이고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 다만 『진허가허』에서는 그 조짐만 보일뿐이고 『옹고집전』에 이르러 불교배척에 대한 불승들의 저항과 반발의 기운이 강화되는 것을 볼 수 있다. 초기 『옹고집전』은 불교적 자비와 인욕으로 악인을 선도한다는 주지를 반영함으로써 불교소설로서의 면모를 분명히 하고 있다. 18세기 출현한 『진허가허』는 19세기 옹고집타령, 옹고집전의 출현에 결정적 기여를 한 것으로 밝혀지거니와 『진허가허』, 초기 옹고집전을 비교 검토해봄으로써 『옹고집전』의 서사미학적 바탕을 좀 더 구체화시킬 수 있었다.

영어초록

This writing was begun from the aim of seeking a work, which became the ground of forming <Onggojip-jeon>, and of clarifying what a characteristic of narrative aesthetics is in a work. The Pansori novels are grasped to have been implemented generally from a source story to Pansori and from Pansori to a novel. However, with regard to <Onggojip-jeon>, this gradational approach is difficult. That is because Pansori doesn't exist. In a situation that Onggojip-taryeong in Pansori doesn't exist, a source tale can be taken as a clue of watching a characteristic of Onggojip-taryeong or <Onggojip-jeon>. After reexamining the existing discussion, this study pointed out <Jin-heo-ga-heo> as a source tale of <Onggojip-jeon>. <Jin-heo-ga-heo>, which is a work in the 18th century, has a motive dubbed ‘tormenting Buddhist monk’ and ‘the real and the false of competing for an owner’, and has even 'a writer's speech,' thereby being what is most consistent with <Onggojip-jeon> in the aspect of the appearance period, contents, and form. <Jin-heo-ga-heo> was the reading for intellects, thereby having been unable to be implemented immediately into the Pansori narration. It was followed by alteration and supplementation over many aspects. A written style and scene composition in line with a master singer's song and performance were separately demanded. It was the implementation into narration available for delivering both performance-based pleasure and lesson to the audience, not a reader. <Onggojip-jeon> in the early times well shows that popular language and thought were positively injected instead of a lofty Chinese-character way and that the progression of narration was varied focusing on the independent scene instead of the outcome-oriented description in the aspect of form. In terms of theme, two works can be said to show the intention of criticizing and resisting power of excluding Buddhism. <Jin-heo-ga-heo> is been shown just its sign. With reaching <Onggojip-jeon>, Buddhists' indication of resistance and defiance to the Buddhist exclusion is reinforced. Nevertheless, <Onggojip-jeon> is finished as what leads a wicked man with a Buddhist priest's extraordinariness and mercy. <Jin-heo-ga-heo>, which appeared in the 18th century, is assumed to have made a crucial contribution to the appearance of Onggojip-taryeong and Onggojip-jeon with reaching the 19th century. Hence, the mutual examination about <Jin-heo-ga-heo> and the early Onggojip-jeon is thought to have led to the more specification in a narrative & aesthetic characteristic in <Onggojip-jeon> that had been hidden.
