초록

1920년대 일본의 오모토는 1923년 12월에 ‘조선의 보천교와 제휴’를 시작했다. 오모토의 교주 오니사부로의 의도는 1921년 정부로부터 극심한 제1차 탄압을 받은 이후 만교동근(万教同根)의 기본사상에 기초하여 세계 종교단체들과 제휴하면서 교단 의 위상을 높혀 일본정부와 일본사회의 부정적인 민심으로부터 벗어나는 동시에 인정 받으려는 것이었다. 조선의 보천교 역시 이 무렵 식민권력으로부터 하나의 종교로 인정 받지 못하고 끊임없이 감시⋅탄압을 받고 있었다. 보천교도 오모토와 제휴 협력을 통해 보편종교, 곧 유사종교가 아닌 기독교와 불교처럼 공인종교로 인정받으려는 노력을 하면서 위기를 벗어나려 했다. 양 교단의 교리에는 친화성이 있었다. 현 질서(미증유의 혼란)의 붕괴와 새로운 세계의 출현(다테가에다테나오시, 개벽)에 대한 갈망이었다. 이에 이르는 과정에는 세 번의 시련(고개, 씨름판)이 놓여 있고, 이를 위해 예정과 실행 프로그램(히나가타, 천지공사)을 제시하였다. 그리고 아이러니컬하게도 두 교단 모두 당시 정치권력으로부터 심각한 탄압을 받고 있었다. 오모토교는 일본에서 정부에 우호 적인 입장을 취하지 않는 소위 ‘불경스러운’ 단체였고, 보천교 역시 조선독립을 기도하 는 단체로 낙인찍혀 감시당하고 있었다. 이러한 상황에서 일본과 조선의 종교교단 간의 제휴 협력도 종교적인 의미를 떠나 정치적 의도를 지니지 않을 수 없었을 것이다. 양 교단의 제휴 노력에도 불구하고 본격적인 제휴는 이루어지지 못했고 1935년의 제2차 오모토교 탄압과 1936년의 차경석 사망으로 양 교단은 해체되는 운명을 맞게 되었다.

영어초록

In the 1920s, the cooperative efforts between Bocheongyo(普天敎) and Omoto(大本), the representative national religions of Korea and Japan, were examined. In December 1923, Omoto started ‘affiliation with Bocheongyo of Joseon’. The intention of partnership cooperation was first on Omoto’s side. The intention of Omoto, was to raise the status of the church by allying with world religious organizations after receiving the first severe suppression from the government in 1921, and thereby increasing the status of the church in the Japanese government and Japan. It was to escape from the negative public sentiment of society and to be recognized at the same time. Bocheongyo in Joseon was also not recognized as a religion by the colonial power at this time and was constantly under surveillance and oppression. Bocheongyo tried to escape the crisis by collaborating with Omoto in an effort to be recognized as a universal religion, that is, like Christianity and Buddhism rather than a pseudo-religion.
There was an affinity between the doctrines of the two denominations.
It is a longing for the collapse of the current order (unprecedented chaos) and the emergence of a new world. There are three ordeals in the process of reaching this, and for this purpose, a plan and execution program have been created. In the late 19th century and the early 20th century, there were religions in colonial Joseon and Japan that contemplated the way mankind would go and predicted the modern state of panic, facing an unprecedented crisis, and both denominations were affiliated. And ironically, both denominations were under severe oppression from the political power at the time. Omoto was a so-called “disrespectful” group in Japan that did not take a friendly stance towards the government. Bocheongyo was also stigmatized as a group praying for Joseon independence by the Japanese Government- General of Korea and was under surveillance. In this situation, the alliance and cooperation between religious denominations in Japan and Joseon could not help but have political intentions apart from religious meaning.
Despite the efforts of the two churches, full-fledged alliance was not achieved, and both churches in Japan and Korea were destined to be disbanded due to the second suppression of the Omoto religion in 1935 and the death of Cha Gyeong-seok in 1936.
