초록

서산 보원사지 오층석탑은 1968년 해체·수리 과정에서 사리장엄 일체가 발견되었으며, 금동 외함과 내함, 녹유리 사리병, 납석 소탑 등으로 구성되었다. 특히 외함에 새겨진 연기법송(緣起法頌)과 보살상·승상의 도상(圖像)은 동아시아 불교문화 연구에서 독특한 사례이다. 이 논문은 사리장엄이 가지는 공예사적 가치와 함께, 불교 교리 및 조형미를 분석하여 그 제작 시기와 역사적 맥락을 파악하는 데 초점을 맞춘다.
사리 외함은 연기법송과 도상 표현에서 중요한 의미를 담고 있다. 연기법송은 불교 교리의 핵심을 간결히 요약한 것으로, 의정이 번역한 경전들과의 연관성을 통해 신라 후기~고려 초기로 이어지는 전승 양상을 확인할 수 있다. 또한 외함의 보살상·승상 도상은 수기(授記) 또는 수법(受法) 장면을 상징하는 것으로 해석되며, 조형적으로 리움미술관 소장 『화엄경』 변상도 보살상과 유사하여 9세기 중후반~10세기 초의 특징을 보인다. 사리 내함의 사천왕상 역시 연주문(聯珠紋)과 함께 섬세한 장식 기법이 돋보이며, 이는 통일신라~고려 초기에 걸친 공예 양식의 발전 과정을 반영한다.
사리장엄은 단순히 공양물로서 역할을 넘어, 보원사 오층석탑의 제작 시기와 불교미술적 의의를 탐구하는 중요한 실마리를 제공한다. 보원사지 오층석탑은 신라 말~고려 초의 석탑 양식을 계승·발전시킨 작품이고, 사리장엄도 이 시기와 근접하고 있다. 사리장엄의 구성 요소와 조형미는 신라와 고려의 양식적 특징이 혼재된 과도기의 산물로 평가되며, 동아시아 불교사에서 유일하게 금속 외함에 새겨진 <연기법송>은 연구 가치가 높다.

영어초록

The Five-Story Stone Pagoda of Bowonsa Temple Site in Seosan revealed a complete set of reliquaries during its dismantling and repair process in 1968. These reliquaries consist of a gilt-bronze outer case, an inner case, a green glass reliquary bottle, and steatite miniature pagodas. Particularly notable are the inscriptions of the Yeonki Beopsong (Verses on Dependent Arising) and the depictions of a bodhisattva and a monk on the outer case, which stand out as unique examples in East Asian Buddhist cultural studies. This study focuses on analyzing the reliquaries’ artistic craftsmanship, Buddhist doctrinal significance, and aesthetic design to elucidate their production period and historical context.
The outer case holds significant meaning in its Yeonki Beopsong inscriptions and iconographic elements. The Yeonki Beopsong, a concise summary of Buddhist teachings, is linked to the sutras translated by the monk Uich’ŏng, illustrating its transmission from late Unified Silla to early Goryeo. Furthermore, the depiction of the bodhisattva and the monk is interpreted as symbolizing a scene of either receiving a prophecy (suji) or receiving the Dharma (subŏp). Its stylistic features, resembling those of the bodhisattva image in the Avatamsaka Sutra illustrations housed in the Leeum Museum, are indicative of late 9th to early 10th-century characteristics. The inner case, adorned with Four Heavenly Kings and pearl-like bead patterns, showcases intricate decorative techniques that reflect the evolution of metalwork styles from Unified Silla to early Goryeo.
Beyond serving as mere offerings, these reliquaries provide critical insights into the production period of the pagoda and its significance in Buddhist art. The Five-Story Stone Pagoda of Bowonsa Temple Site is recognized as a transitional masterpiece that inherits and develops the stone pagoda traditions of late Silla and early Goryeo. While scholars generally date its construction to early Goryeo, some argue for its origin in late Unified Silla. The composition and craftsmanship of the reliquaries represent a synthesis of Silla and Goryeo stylistic elements, marking them as products of a transitional era. Notably, the Yeonki Beopsong inscription on the metal outer case, a rarity in East Asian Buddhist history, holds exceptional research value.
