三足烏ㆍ朱雀ㆍ鳳凰ㆍ圖像의 성립과 친연성 고찰 (A Study on the relationship between three legged crow(三足烏), Jujak(朱雀) and Bonghwang (鳳凰))

초록

본고에서는 日象文에 동반되는 三足烏와 같은 瑞鳥와 문헌과 유물에 보이는 朱雀 및 鳳凰과의 관련성을 고찰하였다. 이를 위해 三足烏․朱雀․鳳凰의 성립 배경과 圖像의 특징 및 변천 과정을 알아본 후, 상호간의 친연성을 살펴보았다.
三足烏의 경우, 三足烏의 ‘烏’를 까마귀라는 특정 새가 아닌 ‘玄鳥’의 범칭으로 이해하면서 玄鳥의 개념과 玄鳥의 日象文의 등장 배경을 고찰하였다. 그 결과 玄鳥에는 검은 색의 까마귀․독수리․매․까치․제비 외에 학과 오리 등이 포함되며, 玄鳥는 天神의 使者로서 일반적인 새들과는 다른 속성을 지닌 ‘태양새’ 내지 ‘하늘새’를 의미한다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이런 까닭에 日象文에는 까마귀와 같은 맹금류 외에 철새이며 물새인 鶴과 오리 등이 그려졌고, 日出을 알리는 닭을 태양 숭배와 연계시켜 닭을 닮은 瑞鳥를 표현하기도 했다. 한편 日象文에 玄鳥인 三足烏가 표현된 것은 북아시아의 鳥葬 풍습과 상호 관련 있는 東夷族의 玄鳥 숭배, 태양ㆍ玄鳥ㆍ東夷와의 연관성을 살필 수 있는 ‘10개의 태양과 羿 장군’과 같은 신화 전승, 태양의 흑점 활동, 天을 대표하는 태양에 대한 인식[千字文에서 ‘하늘 天 땅 地 검을 玄 누를 黃’이라 한 것과 같이 하늘이 검다는 것을 玄鳥로 표현] 등이 복합적으로 작용했기 때문으로 이해되었다.
四神 중 남방의 수호신으로 火를 상징하는 朱雀은 수탉의 벼슬과 공작의 화려한 꼬리 깃털을 圖像的 특징으로 하며, 日象文에 단독으로 등장하는 三足烏와는 달리 암수 한 쌍이 그려지거나 다리는 2足으로 표현되었다. 하지만 태양과 불이 光明과 熱氣라는 공통점을 지니고 있다는 점에서 불새인 朱雀과 太陽鳥인 三足烏는 유사한 성격을 지닌 瑞鳥로 이해되었다. 이를 말해주듯 朱雀에서도 日象文에 등장하는 맹금류․물새․닭을 연상시키는 瑞鳥가 그려졌고, 다리가 3足으로 표현된 것들을 살필 수 있었다. 이처럼 三足烏와 朱雀 圖像이 친연성을 갖는 것은 陰陽五行說의 영향으로 四神의 개념이 성립되고 朱雀이 火를 상징하는 남방의 수호신으로 자리매김하는 과정에서 태양새 내지 하늘새를 의미하는 三足烏가 朱雀으로 變移된 것으로 보았다.
大鳥와 光鳥를 의미하는 鳳凰은 三足烏와 朱雀 圖像에서 볼 수 있는 맹금류와 닭의 특징적 모습을 함께 하고 있다. 매서운 눈매와 날카로운 부리와 같은 맹금류의 특징을 鳳凰에서 살필 수 있음은 光鳥인 鳳凰이 太陽鳥인 三足烏와 같은 속성을 지닌 瑞鳥이기 때문이다. 또한 鳳凰에 火를 상징하는 朱雀 모습이 반영된 것은 “鳳은 火鳥이다” “火離가 鳳凰이다”라는 문헌 내용과 같이 朱雀과 鳳凰이 밀접한 관련성을 지닌 瑞鳥이기 때문이다. 한편 五彩를 가진 瑞鳥로 鳳凰이 인식되고 鳳과 凰이 왕과 왕비를 상징하게 된 것은 鳳凰 형성에 五行論과 陰陽說이 반영된 결과로 풀이되었다.
이상의 내용을 통해 三足烏[玄鳥] 신앙이 분파․발전하는 과정에서 三足烏가 朱雀과 鳳凰으로 變移되었으며, 따라서 三足烏[玄鳥]․朱雀․鳳凰은 상호 유사한 속성을 지닌 瑞鳥임을 살필 수 있었다.

영어초록

This study examined the relationship between the auspicious birds like three legged crow(三足烏) accompanying Ilsangmun (solar patterns), and Jujak and Bonghwang appearing in literature and relics. To this end, the author examined the background, characteristics and transitions of three legged crow(三足烏), Jujak and Bonghwang, and the affinity among them.
As for three legged crow(三足烏), the author took 'Oh (烏)' in three legged crow(三足烏) to mean a generic term for 'black bird,' not a only crow, and inquired into the concept of Hyeonjo(玄鳥) and the background of the appearance of Hyeonjo's Ilsangmun. As a result, it was revealed that Hyeonjo(玄鳥) includes cranes and ducks in addition to crows, eagles, falcons, magpies and swallows that are black, and it means a 'solar bird' or a 'sky bird' that has attributes as a messenger of heavenly gods different than ordinary birds. For this reason, Ilsangmun(日象文) contains cranes and ducks, which are migratory birds and waterfowls, in addition to birds of prey such as crows, and showed an auspicious bird resembling a chicken by linking the chicken heralding sunrise to the sun worship. In the meantime, three legged crow(三足烏), a Hyeonjo(玄鳥), was represented in Ilsangmun(日象文) as a result of the combined action of the Dongyi race's Hyeonjo(玄鳥) worship interconnected with North Asia's sky burial, the myths such as the 'ten suns and General Ye' making it possible to understand the relationship among the Sun, Hyeonjo(玄鳥) and Dongyi, the activity of sun spots, and the perception of the Sun representing the heaven [the blackness of the heaven is represented as Hyeonjo(玄鳥) just as Cheonjamun (thousand-character text, 千字文) says ‘Heaven is black and earth is yellow’].
Jujak(朱雀), representing fire as the guardian deity of the South among the Four Deities (四神), has the iconic characteristics of the rooster's crest and the splendid feathers of a peacock's tail, and unlike three legged crow(三足烏) appearing singly in Ilsangmun(日象文), they are drawn as a couple and have two legs. In that the Sin and fire commonly represent light and heat, however, Jujak(朱雀), a fire bird, and three legged crow(三足烏), a sun bird, are understood as auspicious birds with similar characters. In Jujak(朱雀), auspicious birds, reminding one of birds of prey, waterfowls and chickens appearing in Ilsangmun(日象文), are depicted, and these birds have three legs. Three legged crow(三足烏) icon and Jujak(朱雀) icon have an affinity with each other. It seems because three legged crow(三足烏) changed into Jujak(朱雀) as the concept of Four Deities was formed under the influence of the Yin-Yang School, and Jujak(朱雀) began to represent fire and established itself as the guardian deity of the South.
Bonghwang(鳳凰), representing a wind bird and a bird of light, has the characteristics of both the bird of prey and the chicken that can be found in three legged crow(三足烏) and Jujak(朱雀) icons. Sharp eyes and beaks, the characteristics of birds of prey, can be found in Bonghwang(鳳凰) because Bonghwang(鳳凰), a bird of light, is an auspicious bird that the same characteristics as three legged crow(三足烏), a bird of the Sun. Also, the fact that Bonghwang(鳳凰) reflects the image of Jujak (朱雀) symbolizing fire says that both Jujak (朱雀)and Bonghwang(鳳凰) are auspicious birds as the literature says “Bong (鳳) is a fire bird," and “Hwari (火離) is Bonghwang.”
As a result, this study revealed that three legged crow(三足烏), Jujkak(朱雀), and Bonghwang(鳳凰) are auspicious birds with similar attributes, and that three legged crow(三足烏) changed into Jujak(朱雀) and Bonghwang(鳳凰).
